  • The objective of the present study is to evaluate the cyclic flexural behavior of a hybrid H-steel-reinforced concrete (HSRC) beam at the connection with a H-steel column. The test parameter investigated was the configuration of dowel bars at the joint region of the HSRC beam. The HSRC beam was designed to have plastic hinge at the end of the H-steel beam rather than the RC beam section near the joint. All specimens showed a considerable ductile behavior without a sudden drop of th applied load, resulting in the displacement ductility ratio exceeding 4.6, although an unexpected premature welding failure occurred at the flanges of H-steel beams connecting to H-steel column. The crack propagation in the RC beam region, flexural strength, and ductility of HSRC beam system were insignificantly affected by the configuration of dowel bars. The flexural strength of HSRC beam system governed by the yielding of H-steel beam could be conservatively evaluated from the assumption of a perfect plasticity state along the section.

  • This paper aims at investigating the bending strength of high-strength concrete beams with compressive strength of 80 MPa. The experimental parameters included nominal yielding strength of rebar with 400 and 600 MPa, rebar ratio ranging from 0.98 to 1.97%, and shear span-effective depth ratios (a/d) of 6.0 and 4.8. Experimental results were discussed regarding load-deflection relationship, ductility, bending strength, and prediction of bending strength of beams. Test results indicate that the use of high-strength rebar increased bending strength but decreased ductility. As span-effective depth ratio increased, the ductility of test beams decreased. In addition, test results of bending strength were compared with predictions from the current KCI code, Eurocode 2 and Korean Highway Design Specification (KHDC). The design code predictions for bending strength underestimated the experimental results. Therefore, the current design code predictions for bending strength of high-strength concrete beams would provide conservative design. Predictions of bending strength from KCI code using strength reduction factors and those from Eurocode 2 as well as KHDC using material factors were similar each other.

  • In this study, the flexural behavior of steel fiber reinforced ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) was investigated. It presents experimental results of steel fiber reinforced UHPC with steel fiber content of 2% by volume and steel reinforcement ratio of less than 0.02. This study aims at providing more information about UHPC beams in bending in order to establish a reasonable prediction model for flexural resistance and deflection in structural code in the future. The experimental results show that UHPC is in favor of cracking behavior and ductility of beams, and that the ductility indices range from 6.29 to 10.44, which means high ductility of UHPC. Also, the flexural rigidity of beam whose cast is begun from end of beam is larger than that of beam whose cast is begun from midspan of beam. This result represents that the flexural rigidity is affected by the placing method of UHPC.

  • This paper concerns the flexural behavior of hybrid steel fiber-reinforced ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) beams. It presents experimental research results of hybrid steel fiber-reinforced UHPC with steel fiber content of 1.5% by volume and steel reinforcement ratio of less than 0.02. This study aims at providing realistic information about UHPC beams in bending in order to establish a reasonable prediction model for flexural resistance in structural code in the future. The experimental results show that hybrid steel fiber-reinforced UHPC is in favor of cracking resistance and ductility of beams. The ductility indices range through 9.2 to 15.2, which means high ductility of UHPC. Also, the flexural capacity of beam which contains stirrups in pure bending zone is similar to that of beam which does not contain stirrups in pure bending zone. This result represents that the flexural capacity is not affected by the presence of stirrups whose spacing is 150 mm in bending zone.

  • In concrete structural design provisons, there is a minimum allowable strain of steel to ensure a ductility of RC members and a c/d is limited for the same purpose in EC2. In general, a ductility capacity of RC members is evaluated by a displacement ductility which is a ratio of ultimate displacement to yield displacement, and it is necessary to calculate accurately a yield displacement and an ultimate displacement to evaluate a displacement ductility. But a displacement in members is affected by various member characteristics, so it is hard to calculate a displacement exactly. In this study, a displacement ductility is calculated by calculating a yield displacement and an ultimate displacement through a moment-curvature relationship. The main variables examined are concrete strength, yield strength, steel ratio, spacing of confinement, axial force ratio and concrete ultimate strain. As results, as a concrete strength is increased, a ductility displacement is increased. But as yield strength, steel ratio, spacing of confinement and axial force ratio are increased, a displacement ductility is decreased. And a displacement ductility is necessary to calculate a response modification factor (R) of columns for seismic design, so it is appeared that it is important to calculate a displacement ductility more accurately.

  • The ultimate bending strength and flexural ductility performance of longitudinally stiffened plate girders fabricated with mild steel were investigated utilizing nonlinear incremental finite element analysis. AASHTO LRFD (2002) design specifications were reviewed for possible application of longitudinally stiffened plate girders as compact sections. In order to investigate compact section requirements for plate girders with longitudinal stiffeners in webs, a number of full-scale plate girders were modeled and analyzed up to the collapse under pure bending condition. It was found that the slenderness of sub panel of the webs, the stiffness of longitudinal stiffeners, and the slenderness of compression flanges are key parameters governing the flexural ductility of the plate girders. It was also found from finite element analysis that longitudinally stiffened plate girder sections can satisfy compact section requirements both in full plastic moment capacity and flexural ductility requirement. New design equations have been proposed for longitudinally stiffened plate girders to be treated as compact sections.

  • This experimental investigation was conducted to examine the behavior of eight a third scale columns made of high-strength concrete(HSC). The columns were subjected to constant axial load corresponding to target value of 30 percent of the column axial load capacity and a cyclic horizontal load-inducing reversed bending moment. The variables studied in this research are the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement(Ps=1.58, 2.25 %), tie configuration(hoop-type, cross-type, diagonal-type) and tie yield strength(fy=5,600, 7,950 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$). Test results indicated that the flexural strength of all the columns did not exceed calculated flexural capacities based on the equivalent concrete stress block used in current design code. Columns with 42 percent higher amounts of transverse reinforcement than that required by seismic provisions of ACI 318-99 were shown ductile behavior. With axial load of 30 percent of the axial load capacity, the use of high-strength steel as transverse reinforcement may lead to equal or higher ductility than would be achieved with low-strength steel.

  • Reinforced concrete beam are very diverse materials that are used to bending reinforcement. Recently the case of FRP flexural reinforcement is actively being used is an excellent weight - rigidity. However, use of FRP bending reinforcement in brittleness material properties of concrete in an actual field application causes destruction of detachment and attachment is being considered as a major cause of destruction. For hybrid laminating plates, tensile and three-point bending tests were performed considering various designs and fabricating methods for hybrid FRP plates. Tensile property of each test specimen was investigated and the research parameter of hybrid laminating plates considered here is the combining ratio of fiber to aluminum contents.

  • This paper presents the appropriateness for using high strength reinforcement according to the use of high strength concrete. Nine flexural tests were conducted on full-scale beam specimens according to the concrete strength, reinforcement strength and reinforcement ratio as main variable. The structural behavior was analyzed due to the flexural strength, stress-strain curve, deflections at yielding and fracture point, crack appearance and ductility factor. The member with high-strength reinforcements showed large deflection at yielding point and this was analyzed as a main cause to decrease the ductility factor. Structural behavior after yielding point, however, showed similarity to behavior of members with normal strength reinforcements of same stiffness. It was found that in the case of using reinforcements of $5500kgf/cm^2$ strength, the combination with concrete of $800kgf/cm^2$ strength demonstrated the great appropriateness which can increase the flexural capacity without any reduction of maximum reinforcement ratio.
