Optimal positioning of reaction wheel assemblies of optical observation satellite for minimizing image quality degradation (광학관측위성의 영상품질열화 최소화를 위한 반작용휠 최적위치 선정)

  • This paper describes how to find out the optimum position of the reaction wheel assembly (RWA) to minimize image quality degradation through the integrated system jitter prediction combining the micro-vibration test with finite element analysis considering optical coefficients. Micro-vibration generated from RWA that is widely used for satellite maneuver, is one of key factors that degrades the quality of satellite image. Due to varying vibration characteristics of each RWA, its accommodation position may affect image quality even though the same company manufactured them. To resolve this issue, an integrated system jitter prediction is conducted with all possible RWA accommodation location, and finally we determine optimal RWA position from the analysis results.

  • For satellite attitude control and maneuver, normally four reaction wheels are used through pyramid configuration. However, if satellite's moment of inertia is large or available reaction wheels' capability is small, we can consider using five reaction wheels. In this case, we should think the arrangement of wheels and their operation method. Active SAR satellite requires high agile maneuver about roll axis to achieve looking angle change. In this research, we study the operation method of five reaction wheels configuration for fast roll maneuver.

  • The mission of a lot of satellites on geostationary orbit is the communication and/or the broadcasting. These satellites need a big power, so these have a large solar array. Recently, the new satellite for Earth environment monitoring is developing on geostationary orbit. The payload of Earth monitoring satellite requires better thermal condition on detector. Therefore this satellite uses a boom for the attitude stability instead of rejecting one-side solar array as a heat source. The other hand, it uses some momentum wheels being a more momentum capacity to control the large disturbance by solar pressure due to the asymmetric solar array configuration. In this paper, the analysis on the wheel allocation and the wheel off-loading for COMS is summarized and the results are verified by telemetry of COMS. COMS has no boom and a perfectly asymmetric solar array configuration, and it is operating well on geostationary orbit.

  • Attitude determination and control of satellite is important component which determines the accomplish satellite missions. In this study, attitude control using reaction wheels and momentum dumping of wheels are considered. Attitude control law is designed by Sliding control and LQR. Attitude maneuver control law is obtained by Shooting method. Wheels momentum dumping control law is designed by Bang-Bang control. Four reaction wheels are configurated for minimized the electric power consumption. Wheels control torque and magnetic moment of magnetic torquer are limited.

  • One reaction wheel cluster of satellite usually has four reaction wheels. Each wheel is not arranged parallel to the attitude axis of satellite. Therefore, if one reaction wheel is broken, it is very hard to isolate the fault except using the sensors of wheel itself. In this paper, the isolator of satellite reaction wheel cluster is designed. Using a dual filter, FDP(Fault Detection Parameter) is made to detect fault, and using a multi-hypothesis extended Kalman filter, fault isolation of wheel cluster is done. We verify the improvement of isolation performance of wheel cluster by simulation with 4-reaction wheel cluster.

  • Wheel for passenger car support the car weight with tires, and they transmit rolling and braking power into the ground. Whittling away at wheel weight is more effective to boost fuel economy than lighting vehicle body structure. A shape of hole in disk is optimized for minimizing the weight of steel wheel. Pro/ENGINEER program is used for formulating the design model, and ANSYS package is selected for analyzing the design model. It has difficulties to interface these commercial software directly. For Combining both programs, response surface methodology is applied to construct approximation functions for maximum stresses and maximum displacements are obtained by full factorial design of five levels. This steel wheel is modeled in 14-inch diameter of rim, and wide parameter of hole in disk is only selected as design variable for reducing the weight of steel whee. PLBA(Pshenichny-Lim-Belegundu-Arora) algorithm, which used the second-order information in the direction finding problem and uses the active set strategy, is used for solving optimization problems.

  • When a radial wheel is placed so as to partially overlap a conductive plate and rotated, a lift force is generated on the wheel, a thrust force along the edge, and a lateral force which tends to reduce the overlap region. When several of these wheels are combined, it is possible to realize a system in which the stability of the remaining axes is ensured, except in the traveling direction. To validate the overall characteristics of the multi-wheel system, we propose a transfer system levitated magnetically using radial electrodynamic wheels. The proposed system is floated and propelled by four wheels and arranged in a structure that allows the thrusts generated by the front and rear wheels to offset each other. The dynamic stability of the wheel and the effect of the pole number on the three-axial forces are analyzed by the finite element method. At this time, the thrust and levitation force are strongly coupled, and the only factor affecting them is the wheel rotation speed. Therefore, in order to control these two forces independently, we make use of the fact that the ratio of the thrust to the levitation force is proportional to the velocity and is independent of the size of the gap. The in-plane and out-of-plane motion control of the system is achieved by this control method and compared with the simulation results. The experimental results show that the coupled degrees of freedom can be effectively controlled by the wheel speed alone.

Relationship between Magnetic Torquer Arrangement and Reaction Wheel Momentum Dumping Performance (자기토커 배치와 반작용휠 모멘텀 덤핑 성능 관계)

  • Due to external disturbances on the satellite, unwanted momentum is accumulated on reaction wheels. To remove this momentum, three magnetic torquers which are installed along the satellite's axes are used. The magnetic torquers generated torque indirectly by interactions with the earth's magnetic field. Thus, during momentum dumping, we should consider both the magnetic torquer and the earth's magnetic field generated on the magnetic torquers at the same time. When low earth orbit satellite with high inclination angle holds nadir pointing attitude, weak earth's magnetic field is generated along the satellite's pitch axis. In this case, one magnetic torquer is overloaded and momentum dumping performance is degraded. This research will review the method to improve the momentum dumping performance by adjusting magnetic torquers arrangement.

Reaction Wheel Momentum Dumping with Magnetic Torquer Failure (자기토커 고장시 반작용휠 모멘텀 덤핑)

  • High precision pointing satellite uses the reaction wheels for the attitude control and their momentum dumping is performed by the three magnetic torquers. In this paper, the effects of one magnetic torquer's failure on the momentum dumping will be reviewed. When the satellite on the high inclination angle orbit holds LVLH (Local Vertical Local Horizontal) attitude, pitch axis magnetic torquer failure causes the momentum dumping failure. But in case of other torquer's failure, momentum dumping is still possible with degraded dumping performance. When pitch axis magnetic torquer fails, momentum dumping is possible by changing the satellite attitude. This paper propose the satellite attitude change to make the momentum dumping possible when pitch axis magnetic torquer fails. In addition, if torquer arrangement is modified, momentum dumping is always possible regardless of any torquer's failure.

  • When the reaction wheel rotates, the disturbance occurs mainly due to the mass imbalance. It is necessary to predict the effect of disturbance on the attitude stability of the satellite. The disturbance forces and torques are identified and the attitude jitter of the satellite is analyzed depending on the configuration of the wheels. On the analysis the equation of the satellite motion is combined with the translational and rotational dynamics of the wheels. The accuracy of analysis is verified by simulation of STSAT-3 satellite.
