Effects of ${\gamma}$-Irradiation on the Volatile Organic Compounds from Cuscutae Semen (Cuscuta chinensis Lam) (감마선 조사가 기능성 식품 소재인 토사자의 휘발성 유기성분에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was performed to examine the effect of ${\gamma}$-irradiation on the volatile organic compounds of Cuscutae Semen (Cuscuta chinensis L.). The volatile organic compounds of non-irradiated and 10 kGy ${\gamma}$-irradiated Cuscutae Semen were isolated using SDE apparatus and analyzed by GC/MS. Limonene, ethanol, (E)-2-decenal, hexadecanol, nonanoic acid and nonanal were detected as dominant compounds. Before irradiation, the total concentration of volatile organic compounds of Cuscutae Semen was approximately 189.90 mg/kg. After irradiation at 10 kGy, total concentrations increased to 299.46 mg/kg, but, the profile of volatile compounds including the essential oils of Cuscutae Semen was not differ from non- and irradiated sample. Therefore it was improved the extraction yield of useful compounds such as limonene, menthol, piperitone and isomenthone by irradiation.

  • Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs) emitted form electronicSince toluene, xylene, cyclohexanone, and benzofuran will bring on the deleterious smell and the health risk, eventhough very small amount of these areexposed to human body, quantitative analysis was achieved by GC-MS system. As a result of these analyses, except PCB(CEM-1) of which is one of the electronic parts, the left of electronic parts represented, imme-diately form 30 minutes to 1 hour after heating, the trends that toluene, xylene, cyclohexanone and phenol were consecuticely emitted very high. and toluene, xylene, phenol, cyclohexanone, and benzofuran from most of the electronic parts were emitted very frequently within the measuring period. Finally, Trans of electronic parts showed the highest concentration of emission, and xylene(550~2482 ${\mu}g/m^2$) was the most noticeably emitting compound of VOCs.

  • To elucidate the relationship of the Quality of aromatic tobacco to their chemical constituents, certain chemical components and leaf Quality by price were compared among leaves produced, 1) under 4 different light intensities during maturing stage in field, 2) under 4 different temperature of 20$^{\circ}C$. 25$^{\circ}C$. 30$^{\circ}C$ and control of l8-22-28$^{\circ}C$ in phytotron. As the light intensity decreased chlorophyll content of harvested leaves increased, but specific leaf weight and Quality of cured leaves lowered. The content of sugar. pet. ether exts. and volatile organic acids decreased, but total nitrogen, nicotine, ash and pH increased as the .light intensity decreased. As the growth temperature increased days to flower was shortened and the growth was decreased without significant difference in leaf Quality. With higher growth temperature the content of nitrogen, ash and pH increased, but sugar decreased with no difference in pet. ether exts., volatile organic acids and volatile neutral content. Several Quality indices were disscussed for the Quality evaluation of aromatic leaves for two groups, respectively.

Classification and identification of organic aerosols in the atmosphere over Seoul using two dimensional gas chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC/TOF-MS) data (GC×GC/TOF-MS를 이용한 서울 대기 중 유기 에어로졸의 분류 및 동정)

  • To identify a variety of organic compounds in the ambient aerosols, the two-dimensional gas chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC) system (2DGC) has been applied. While 2DGC provides more peaks, the amount of the generated data becomes huge. A two-step approach has been proposed to efficiently interpret the organic aerosol analysis data. The two-dimensional 2DGC data were divided into 6 chemical groups depending on their volatility and polarity. Using these classification standards, all the peaks were subject to both qualitative and quantitative analyses and then classified into 8 classes. The aerosol samples collected in Seoul in summer 2013 and winter 2014 were used as the test case. It was found that some chemical classes such as furanone showed seasonal variation in the high polarity-volatile organic compounds (HP-VOC) group. Also, for some chemical classes, qualitative and quantitative analyses showed different trends. Limitations of the proposed method are discussed.

A study of analytical method for volatile fatty acids (VFA) by cryogenic trapping-thermal desorption (CT-TD) technique (저온농축열탈착 시스템을 연계한 유기지방산의 분석법 평가 및 검토)

  • In this study, 13 compounds including four volatile fatty acids (VFA) and nine volatile organic compounds (VOC) were analyzed by cryogenic trapping-thermal desorption technique. In order to evaluate the analytical method for VFA, calibration experiments were performed using five different sorbent materials. When the calibration results are compared between different sorbents, sampling tube filled with Carbopack X showed the highest response factor (RF) for both VFA and VOC. To validate this new analytical method for VFA using cryogenic trapping-thermal desorption technique, this method was compared with alkali absorption method recommended by the odor prevention law of the Korea Ministry of Environment (KMOE). For this purpose, unknown samples were analyzed by two different methods, i.e., cryogenic trapping-thermal desorption (TD) and alkali absorption with solid phase microextraction (SPME). When the results of two different methods were compared, ratios of concentrations determined by the two analytical methods (TD/SPME) was found as 0.46 (valeric acid) ~ 0.71 (isovaleric acid). Therefore, additional study is required to properly establish and find stable analytical conditions for VFA analysis. Furthermore, comparison between two different methods should be made with more reliable calibration approaches.

  • The volatile components, normal hydrocarbons, organic acids, and nonvolatile fatty acids in the various parts of Luffa cylindrica(L.) Roemer(sponge-gourd) were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. More than 150 volatile components were separated and thirty seven components were identified and quantified. The contents of essential oil were 0.05%, 0.05%, and 0.08% on a dried weight base in leaves, stem, and seeds respectively. Fruit juice and sap contained 0.06% and 0.03% oil on the fresh weight base. Twenty six components of normal hydrocarbons in leaves, stem, seed, and unripe fruit were separated, identified, and quantified. The total concentrations of the hydrocarbons were $75.5\;{\mu}g/g$ in leaf, $52.0\;{\mu}g/g$ in stem, $46.6\;{\mu}g/g$ in fruit juice, and $32.8\;{\mu}g/g$ in seed fractions. The major hydrocarbons in leaves, stem, and fruit juice were $nC_{25}$, $nC_{27}$, $nC_{29}$, and $nC_{31}$, $nC_{16}$, $nC_{17}$, $nC_{18}$, and $nC_{19}$ were abundant in seeds mainly. The concentration of malonic acid among the five organic acids was highest in leaves, stem, and flowers. Unripe fruit contained 24.5 mg/g of the five organic acids and malic and citric acids were higher. The concentrations of palmitic, linoleic, and linolenic acids were higher concentration in the various parts of sponge-gourd and palmitic acid was distributed in the most parts. The concentrations of organic and fatty acids in the sap were negligible.

  • 미량독성 유해물질은 크게 중금속 성분과 잔류성 유기오염물질 (POPs, persistent organic pollutants)로 나눌 수 있다. 아직은 우리 사회의 관심이 직접 주변에서 확인할 수 있는 국내 배출에 머물고 있으나 미량독성 유해물질로 분류되는 많은 물질들이 분해가 어렵고 대기 중 체류시간이 길어 장거리 이동의 가능성이 매우 크다. 실제 오염물질 배출이 거의 없는 북극의 북극곰, 물개, 물고기에서도 미량독성 유해물질 검출이 보고되고 있는데, 다른 지역에서 배출된 독성물질들이 침적과 휘발을 반복하며 이동하는 가운데 기온이 낮은 극지방에 축적됨으로써 나타난 현상이다. Characteristics of Volatile Flavor Compounds in Kochujangs with Meju and Soybean Koji during Fermentation (메주와 콩 고오지를 혼용하여 담금한 고추장 숙성중의 휘발성 향기성분의 특성)

  • Volatile compounds of kochujang prepared with meju and koji were analyzed by using a purge and trap method during fermentation and identified with GC-MSD. Thirteen alcohols, seventeen esters, seven acids, six aldehydes and nine others were identified. Twenty four volatile flavor detected immediately after making kochujang including 7 alcohols and 9 esters. Six volatile flavor compounds including 1 alcohol and 3 esters were more found after 30 day of fermentation and increased to forty nine of volatile compounds after 150 days. Six alcohols such as ethanol, 3-methyl-butanol, 2-methyl-1-propanol, 1-butanol and nine esters such as ethyl acetate, ethyl butyrate, ethyl caproate, ethyl carpylate and seven others were commonly found through the fermentation period. Peak area (%) of 1-butanol was the highest one among the volatile flavor compounds after 30 day of fermentation and ethanol showed the highest peak area after 60-90 day and 150 day of fermentation, and 3-methyl-1-butanol showed the highest peak area after 120 day of fermentation, 2-Methyl-1-propanol, ethyl butyrate, ethyl acetate, acetaldehyde, ethoxyethene, ethenone, methylbenzene were detected in the kochujang during the fermentation.

  • In order to learn the emission characteristics of hazardous pollutants associated with environmental tobacco smoking (ETS), we measured the concentrations of major aromatic VOC and carbonyl compounds released from ETS. By acquiring the different smoke types of ETS, we were able to determine that the concentrations of those species range from ppb (normal exhaled air of smoker prior to smoking) to ppm levels (direct release of ETS without filter). Using these measurement data, we also evaluated the body-retaining rate of these compounds as the result of ETS. The results of our analysis indicated that predominant portion of them (e.g., > 99%) are retained as the result of cigarette smoking. To learn more about the potential impact of ETS, more extensive study may be required to assess the gross picture of pollutant deposition inside respiratory intake and their health-effects.

Effects of Fining Treatments on Color and Clearness of Apple Wine (청징방법에 따른 사과와인의 색과 투명도에 미치는 영향)

  • Comparative fining trials were conducted in a laboratory to study the effects of fining treatments including polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP) and bentonite on the color and clearness of apple wine. The wines were subjected to three different fining treatments: PVPP, PVPP+bentonite (applied at the same time), and PVPP+bentonite (24 h later). Based on the results, all treatments induced noticeable decreases in wine color (APHA value) and turbidity. The treatment including PVPP and bentonite at the same time provided the best results in relation to wine color and clearness. PVPP was the most effective in the reduction of phenolic compounds, which means it helped wine obtain a paler color. Organic acids and aromatic profile were not altered by the fining treatments.
