  • This study was carried out to improve the utilization of food wastes known as major source of environmental pollution and to determine proper additional levels of methionine hydroxy analogue(MHA) on food wastes. 1%, 3% and 5% of MHA were added to 3 groups of food wastes gathered from small cafeteria. Each group has 3 reiteration. NaCl contents were tended to get higher as addition levels increased(p<0.05). And pH values were tended to get lower as additional levels increased(p<0.05). $NH_3-N$ contents were significantly decreased as additional levels increased(p<0.05). Total VFA(Volatile Fatty Acid) content was increased after 30 days of storage on control. On MHA treatments(1, 3, 5%), total VFA contents were decreased until 15 days of storage, and kept low values until the end of experiment. In terms of superficial change, mildew covered all over control, and covered by thin mildew on the surface of 1% MHA treatment. No superficial change found on 3% and 5% MHA treatments. In conclusion, over 1% addition of MHA was effective to prevent the decay and degeneration of food wastes.

  • This study was performed to characterize the trace organic pollutants in the industrial wastewater and to establish the database of the trace organic pollutants. The four manufacturing industries, which are refined petroleum, industrial chemicals, rubber & plastics and fabricated metals, were surveyed. The wastewater and discharging water of these 30 factories are analyzed to characterize the trace organic pollutants. In industrial chemicals, the kinds of products and organic pollutants are very various. Therefore to select the characteristic organic pollutants in this categories are also very difficult. In industrial chemicals, the gas chromatograpic peak patterns of wastewater are represented the various type according to their products, therefore the typical patterns of the characteristic organic pollutants could not be obtained because the kinds of manufactured goods and organic pollutants are very various. In refined petroleum, the effluent is discharged in the distillatory process of atmosphere pressure and contained the saturated hydrocarbons, phenol compounds, benzene compounds and naphtalene compounds. The saturated hydrocarbons peaks from $C_{15}$ to $C_{35}$ are represented the typical oil patterns by the uniform intervals therefore the peak can be easily distinguished. In rubber & plastics, the wastewater is discharged in the washing process which contains the additives. The problem of wastewater is not serious because the manufacturing process is not produced the effluent or the produced cooling water is recycled in that process.

  • This study was performed to investigate changes in benthic environment and macrobenthic polychaete communities in Gamak Bay where various environmental quality improvement projects have been implemented in recent years. Field surveys were carried out in February, 2005 and February, 2006 and twenty stations were selected to explore whether or not there were between-year differences in biotic and abiotic variables. Of 10 environmental variables measured, only three variables including dissolved oxygen (DO), total ignition loss (IL), acid volatile sulfide (AVS) showed significant between-year differences. Specifically, IL and AVS were, on average, 1.5 and 3 times lower in 2006 compared to those in 2005, respectively, which was more pronounced in the northern part of the bay. A total of 95 polychaete species was sampled from the two sampling occasions. Between-year differences in the number of species, abundance, and diversity were varied from place to place. In the northern part of the bay, fewer species were found in 2006 rather than in 2005, but diversity increased in 2006 due to the reduction in dominance of a few species. On the contrary, in the central part of the bay, the number of species, abundance and diversity prominently increased in 2006. In the southern part of the bay, all the biological indices maintained similarly during the two years. Dominant species in 2005 were such opportunistic or organic pollution indicator species as Lumbrineris longifolia, Capitella capitata, Mediomastus californiensis, Pseudopolydora paucibranchiata, etc. and most of them were mainly distributed in the northern part of the bay and in the proximity of it. In 2006, however, Euchone alicaudata, L. longifolia, Paraprionospio pinnata, Flabelligeridae sp., etc. were dominant and distributed mainly in the central part of the bay. Multivariate analyses showed that the whole polychaete community could be divided into 5 groups reflecting the geographical positions of the sampling stations and temporal variation particularly in the northern part of the bay. According to the results of BIO-ENV procedure, TOC (${\rho}=0.52$) and AVS (${\rho}=0.49$) as a single variable best explained the polychaete community structure. The best combination was made by such variables as TOC, AVS, sorting coefficient, and water temperature (${\rho}=0.60$). In conclusion, between-year differences in biotic and abiotic variables imply that recent efforts for the environmental improvement produced positive influences on the benthic environment of Gamak Bay, particularly the northern part of the bay.

  • A food waste composting apparatus of 450 L was designed for and tested with changing conditions of inlet air flow rate, agitation and inoculation. Agitation was done twice per day for 5 min and inlet air flow rate was set as 22.7 L/min for RUN 1. For RUN 2 and RUN 3, agitation was continuous, and inlet air flow rate was changed frequently as 10 L/min, 15 L/min and 20 L/min in order to maintain temp. above 5$0^{\circ}C$, and the concentration of $O_2$over 7 mol%. The compost of RUN3 was inoculated with 10 wt% of accomplished compost, and it was compared with RUN 1 and 2 to show the effect of inoculation. The composting rates of RUN 2 and RUN 3 were faster than that of RUN 1, because agitation was continuous and temperature was controlled in RUN 2 and RUN 3. Inoculated RUN 3 was better than RUN 1 and RUN 2 in the concentrations of $CO_2$and reduction of volatile solids. while the effect of inoculation on C/N ratios, pH change and the numbers of microoragnisms was not clearly appeared.

  • To elucidate succession of bacterial populations, especially nitrifying bacteria during the composting of cattle manure with apple pomace, fluorescent in situ hybridization(FISH) using rRNA targeted oligonucleotide probes were applied. The density of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria was ranged from $3,3{\times}10^6cells/g$ dw to $13,4{\times}10^6cells/g$ dw with the peak value after 26 composting days whereas that of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria varied between $6.0{\times}10^6cells/g$ dw and $17.2{\times}10^6cells/g$ dw with the peak value after 7 composting days. And the tendency that the numbers of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria were higher than those of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, and the peak-time of their densities were the same as that of data determined by the ratio of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria to eubacteria. The peak of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria followed the peak of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, at the late phase of composting process could be probably caused by the depletion of volatile ammonia of composting materials. Besides these results indicate that FISH method is a useful tool for detection of slow growing nitrifying bacteria.

  • This study was purposed to evaluate the characteristic changes of the solidified livestock manure fuel(SLMF) through the application of compression treatment process. The compression process led to an increase of VS/TS ratio (Volatile solids/Total solids ratio) and moisture removal effect of SLMF. The amount of leachate withdrawn from dairy cattle manure and Hanwoo manure by compression were 21~26%(w/w) and 15~20%(w/w), respectively. The specific gravity of the leachate of dairy cattle manure and Hanwoo manure were 1.01 and 0.99, respectively. The dehydrated cow manure was easily processed into ball-shaped solidified fuel. The drying time of the SLMF was proportional to the diameter of the solidified fuel. The highest heating value was observed in diameter range of 10~15mm SLMF. It is concluded that the higher heating value of 10~15mm SLMF was related with the amount of fibrous matter contained in the SLMF.

  • The removals of TCE and PCE vapor with or without a supply of toluene as a primary substrate were compared in a biofiltration process, and the variations of microbial communities associated with the removal were also investigated. As a result of investigations on the removals of TCE/PCE in a biofilter B within which TCE/PCE-acclimated sludge was attached on the surface of media without a supply of primary substrate, and those in another biofilter A where toluene-acclimated sludge was attached with a supply of toluene as a primary substrate, followings were found: (i) parts of microbes responsible to the decomposition of toluene vapor participate in the removal of chlorinated VOCs such as TCE and PCE, and (ii) effective biological removals of TCE and PCE vapor do not necessarily need cometabolism. Sequencing of 16S rDNA obtained from the band profile of DGGE (Denaturating Gradient Gel Electrophoresis), it was confirmed that: (i) uncultured alpha proteobacterium, uncultured Desulfitobacterium, uncultured Rhodobacteraceae bacterium, Cupriavidus necator, and Pseudomonas putida were found to be toluene-decomposing microbes, (ii) alpha proteobacterium HTCC396 is a TCE-removing microbe, (iii) Desulfitobacterium sp. is a PCE-decomposing microbe, and (iv) particularly, uncultured Desulfitobacterium sp. is probably a microbe decomposable not only toluene but also various chlorinated VOC vapor including TCE and PCE.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of initial concentration on composting of diesel-contaminated soil. Silt loam was used in this study. Target contaminant, diesel oil, was spiked at about 2,000, 4,000, and 10,000mg/kg of dry soil, respectively. Mix ratio of soil to sludge was 1:0.3 as wet weight basis. Temperature was maintained at $20^{\circ}C$ Volatilization loss of TPH was 0.7-3.5% of the initial concentrations. Volatilization loss of TPH was not increased in proportion to the initial concentration. After 30 days of operation, 86% and 94% of the initial concentrations at about 2,000 and 10,000mg TPH/kg were biodegraded. Normal alkanes were degraded more rapidly than TPH. The compounds of C12 to C14 were volatilized greatly among n-alkanes. The first order degradation rate constants of about 2,000, 4,000, and 10,000mg TPH/kg were 0.079, 0.069, and 0.061/day, respectively. Produced-$CO_2$ and degraded-TPH were correlated highly regardless of the initial TPH concentration(r = 0.97-0.99).

  • Photocurable binder for a transparent glass fiber composite was prepared with alicyclic methacrylate and fluorene-based diacrylate. ANOVA (analysis of variance) analysis was used to know main factors affecting the conversion of photocurable binder. It showed radiation intensity and photoinitiator (PI) concentration were main factors. The conversion of photocurable binder was simply increased with radiation intensity. Its increment however was abated with increasing PI concentration. We found that average conversion of the binder measured by FTIR-ATR was 87% when it was exposed to $5J/cm^2$ of UV dose with 5 wt% of PI. Oxime ester type PI was very effective to get a high degree of conversion, but it caused a yellowing problem. Owing to post-baking process, UV cured film showed an improved thermal stability by increase of conversion and removal of volatile organic compounds. TG% at $260^{\circ}C$ of film cured with 5 wt% of PI (TPO+MBF) and $5J/cm^2$ of UV radiation increased from 95.4 to 99.0% by post-baking at $230^{\circ}C$ for 5 min.

  • Objective of this study was to monitor the hydrogen sulfide production rate and concentration in anaerobic co-digestion of swine manure and food waste for biogas production in order to alternate the petroleum based energy. Anaerobic co-digestion for biogas production was performed in serum bottles at 2% volatile solids (VS) concentration and various mixing ratios of two substrates(swine manure: food waste = 100:0 ~ 0:100). Although hydrogen sulfide production rates were varied with digestion periods at different treatments, it was observed that hydrogen sulfide produced in the swine manure alone was lower at 2.4 fold than that of food waste. For effects of hydrogen sulfide concentration in the different mixing ratios of swine manure to food waste, the higher food waste ratio the higher hydrogen sulfide concentration. Also its average concentrations were varied from 0.1452% in the swine waste only to 0.3420% in the food waste alone. For the composition ratio of bio-gas in their anaerobic co-digestion, it appeared that there was 53.2% of $CH_4$, 23.9% of $CO_2$, 0.3% of $H_2S$ and 22.7% of miscellaneous gases including moisture.
