Thrbulent Wake Structure behind Rectangular Cylinders in a Uniform Shear Flow (균일한 전단류에 놓인 각주 후류의 난류구조)

  • This research has presented and experimental investigation on the characteristics of turbulent wake past a rectanular cylinder, according to various width/height ratio such as B/H=2.0, 2.79, 3.0, and 4.0 in a uniform shear flow. In order to perform this study, a special shear flow generator which produces the uniform shear flow has been designed and manufactured. It is found that the characteristics of the wake in a uniform shear flow are quite different from those of a uniform flow and vary with shear rate. And also, the formation of regular vortex structure is concerned with shear rate.

  • An experimental study is made on turbulent diffusion flames stabilized by a circular cylinder in a divergence flow. In this paper, stabilization characteristics and flame structure are examined by varying the divergence angle of duct and position of a circular cylinder. The fuel used is a commercial grade gaseous propane injected by two slit of rod. It is found that the positive pressure gradient greatly influences the eddy structure behind the rod. and that two different kinds of combustion patterns exist at the blowoff limit depending on the divergent angle of duct. They are distinguished by their wake structures: one associated with Karman vortex shedding, the other without it. Also, the blowoff velocity in the former is found to be higher than in the later.

  • The purpose of study is to investigate the flame stability and structure of turbulent diffusion flame behind the hollowed flame holder, which is located on the waste gas coming out from the test furnace. PDFs and Power Spectra technique of fluctuating temperature and ion current measurement were needed for this purpose. We discussed that the three types of stabilized flames were found as the result of post study. In this paper, we established the stability mechanism near the flame holder.

An experimental study on the wake structure behind a van type vehicle (Van형 자동차의 후류구조에 대한 실험적 해석(와류 형성을 중심으로))

  • The wake structure behind a van type vehicle was studied experimentally with a 5-hole yawhead probe. Through an effective calibration method of the 5-hole yawhead probe, the flow properties such as velocity vector, total pressure and static pressure were obtained on two cross sections within the wake. These results combined with the surface flow visualization performed in the previous study, yielded some information about the wake structure. When the model was placed in a stream with zero yaw angle, two counter rotating vortices were observed behind the model which pull down the surface flow on each side of the model. With increasing the yaw angle, the surface flow on the windward side changed to divide the flow in two directions, one flows upward on the upper part and the other flows downward on the lower part of the windward side. Hence a new weak vortex was created on the upper windward side, which resulted 3 vortices within the wake. The size and the strength of the vortices increased with yaw angle.

  • 본 연구에서는 다양한 모형의 실린더 주위의 균일한 유동에 대하여, 후류에 생기는 유동현상을 EDISON_CFD를 이용하여 분석하였다. 고정된 실린더에 대해 주어진 레이놀즈 수에서 시뮬레이션을 이용하여 실린더의 형상에 따른 $C_L$값과 주기를 분석하였다. 이 후 진동운동을 가정한 운동방정식을 이용하여 실린더의 운동 및 발전 효율을 예측하여 비교하였다. 또한 운동방정식을 Bode 선도를 이용하여 용수철 상수와 감쇠율에 따른 발전 효율의 변화를 살펴보았다.

  • A combined experimental and numerical study has been conducted to investigate the downstream interaction between simulated SNG-air premixed flames in fuel composition of 91% $CH_4$ + 6% $C_3H_8$ + 3% $H_2$. In this study, the effects of fuel molar concentration(lean-rich) and strain rate($a_g$) were major parameters. A main focus is to investigate flames behavior and chemical interaction at flames downstream. The numerical results were calculated by OPPDIF application. The reaction mechanism adopted was USC-II model including C3 reaction.

  • To generate electricity from wind energy, wind turbine generally has a rotor blade. Since this rotor blade is a kind of the rotating machinery, the wake from the rotor is very Important role in the side of the aerodynamic performances. Thus the study about wake is essential to analyze wind turbine aerodynamics. In this study wake characteristics are analyzed by hot-wire probe in the K.A.F.A(Korea Air Force Academy) wind tunnel. It is possible to analyze the wake characteristics by hot-wire probe from acquiring the velocity fluctuations at given positions in the flow. This velocity data are arranged by trigger signal at same azimuth of the blade in periodic manner of the rotor blade. From this various wake characteristics are found : radial and axial position of the tip vortex, vortex core characteristics in the flow etc.

  • A possibility of the drag coefficient estimation in numerical water basins was discussed where the numerical solution were calculated by the 3-dimensional hydro-dynamical model (FLOW-$3D^{(R)}$) with the RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. On the known cases of the drag coefficients for a rectangle, the numerical drag coefficients got $1.34{\sim}1.52$ and the wind tunnel values were $1.3{\sim}1.5$. For a cylinder, the numerical values were calculated as $0.75{\sim}0.78$ in the range of 0.5

  • Vortical structures in the near-wake region of a cubic obstacle are studied using numerical simulation. We consider flow between two parallel plates with a cube mounted on one of the plates. In the turbulent near-wake region of the flow, coherent structures such as hairpin vortices are found. Quasi-periodic behavior of the hairpin vortices is noticed; its dimensionless frequency at Re=1,000 is about 0.82 which is consistent with the result of Elavarasan of et al.'s experiment [Fluid Dyn. Research, 2000, 27] although their geometry is somewhat different from on. In the case of Re=3,500, the dimensionless frequency of the hairpin vortex is about 1.60. It is observed that the translating speed of the head of the hairpin vortex is lower than the streamwise mean velocity at that location. In the vicinity of the lower plate downstream of the cube, various length scales are identified thus less coherent. However, it is noticed that the vortical structures become gradually elongated downstream of the new reattachment.

Interrelationship Between Topological Structures and Secondary Vortices in the Near Wake of aCircular Cylinder (실린더 근접후류에서 위상학적 구조와 2차 와류의 상호 관계)

  • Characteristics of secondary vortices is topologically investigated in the near-wake region of a circular cylinder, where the Taylor's hypothesis does nut hold. The three-dimensional flow fields in the wake-transition regime were measured by a time-resolved PIV for various planes of view. The convection velocities of the Karman and secondary vortices are evaluated from the trajectory of the vortex center. Then, saddle points are determined by applying the critical point theory. It is shown that the inclination angle of the secondary vortices agrees well with the previous experimental data. The flow fields in a moving frame of reference have several critical points and the mushroom-like structure appears in the streamline patterns of the secondary vortices. Since the distributions of fluctuating Reynolds stresses defined by triple decomposition are closely related with the existence of secondary vortices, the physical meaning of them is explained in conjunction with the vortex center and saddle point trajectories.
