Eight small scale circular reinforced concrete columns were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. Test specimens were designed with 4.5 aspect ratio. The selected test variables are longitudinal steel ratio, transverse steel ratio, yielding strength of longitudinal steel and axial load ratio. The test results of columns with different longitudinal steel ratio, transverse steel ratio and axial load ratio showed different seismic performance such as equivalent damping ratio, residual displacement and effective stiffness. It was found that the column with low strength of longitudinal steel showed significantly reduced seismic performance, especially for equivalent damping ratio and residual displacement. The regulation of flexural over-strength is adopted by Korea Bridge Design Specifications (Limited state design, 2012). The test results are compared with nominal strength, result of nonlinear moment-curvature analysis and the design specifications such as AASHTO LRFD and Korea Bridge Design Specifications (Limited state design).

In this study, displacement ductility capacity and plastic hinge regions of reinforced concrete multi-column bent with different transverse reinforcement ratio are investigated. The ductility increases remarkably as transverse reinforcement ratio increase and the multi-column bent loaded along transverse direction is more ductile. The plastic hinge length for special detailing requirements of transverse reinforcement is estimated. For high target ductility, plastic hinge length for confinement should be extended with increased transverse reinforcement ratio. The plastic hinge length of multi-column bent loaded along transverse direction is shorter than that along longitudinal direction, because of the different moment distribution.

Eight small scale circular reinforced concrete columns (4.5 aspect ratio) were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. The selected test variables are longitudinal steel ratio (2.017%, 3.161%), transverse steel ratio, and axial load ratio (0, 0.07, 0.15). Volumetric ratio of spirals of all the columns is 0.335~0.894% in the plastic hinge region. It corresponds to 39.7~122.3% of the minimum requirement of confining steel by Korean Bridge Design Specifications, which represent existing columns not designed by the current seismic design specifications or designed by seismic concept. The final objectives of this study are to provide quantitative reference data and tendency for performance or damage assessment based on the performance levels such as cracking, yielding, steel fracture, etc. In this paper, describes mainly failure behavior, strength degradation behaviour, displacement ductility of circular reinforced concrete bridge columns with respect to test variables.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of circular reinforced concrete bridge piers with confinement steel and to provide the data for developing improved seismic design criteria. Fourteen circular reinforced concrete bridge piers were tested under a constant axial load and a cyclically reversed horizontal load. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process may be enhanced by the use of sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. In the companion paper, the proposed numerical method for the seismic performance assessment of circular reinforced concrete bridge piers with confinement steel is verified by comparison with experimental results.

The lateral reinforcements of concrete such as hoops and spiral bars are known to confine concrete to compensate the strength loss due to fire by reducing explosive spalling and improving the capacity of ductility. In this context, a study was conducted to investigate the residual mechanical properties of confined and unconfined concrete($f_{ck}$=60MPa) after a single thermal cycle at 300, 600, $800^{\circ}C$. The main parameters required to establish the stress-strain relationship are the peak stress, the elastic modulus, and the strain at peak stress. The knowledge of the residual mechanical properties of concrete is necessary whenever the thermally damaged structure is required to bear a significant share of the loads, even after a severe thermal accident. Based on the results obtained in this study, the residual stress of confined concrete under thermal damage is higher according to the level of confinement and the larger strain made it to have better ductility. The decreasing ratio of elastic modulus from the relationship of stress and strain was also smaller than that of unconfined concrete.

This paper estimated the structural behavior of recycled aggregate concrete confined with spiral reinforcement. The main test parameter was designed to be the type of aggregates and the steel ratio of spirals. A total of 18 specimens were cast and tested in this study. All the specimens had a diameter of 150mm and a height of 300mm. The specimens can be divided into two groups, based on the type of coarse aggregate used. The ratio of spiral reinforcement was varied from 0 % to 1.75%. To measure the axial and lateral deformations of the specimens, a total of six linear variation displacement transducers (LVDTs) were installed at each specimen. Furthermore strain gauges were also attached to the steel spirals to obtain the strain of spiral reinforcements. From the experimental results, the structural performance of recycled aggregate concrete specimens confined by steel spirals was similar to that of natural aggregate concrete specimens regardless of the ratio of spiral reinforcement.

In this paper, the comparative performance of repaired RC columns using steel and CFRP is presented. Also, the effect of transverse reinforcement ratio on the behavior of the steel and the CFRP repairing is investigated. Monotonic and cyclic load tests are conducted on nine RC column specimens with different repairing strategies and transverse reinforcement ratios to compare the load-displacement curves and the hysteretic behaviors. From the tests, it is observed that both steel and CFRP jacket repairings can significantly increase the displacement ductility and the ultimate load capacity of damaged columns.

Three small scale hollow circular reinforced concrete columns(4.5 aspect ratio) were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. Diameter of section is 400 mm, hollow diameter is 200 mm. The selected test variable are transverse steel ratio. Volumetric ratio of spirals of all the columns is 0.302~0.604% in the plastic hinge region. It corresponds to 45.9~91.8% of the minimum requirement of confining steel by Korean Bridge Design Specifications, which represent existing columns not designed by the current seismic design specifications or designed by seismic concept.

The aim of this study is to assess the seismic performance of octagonal hollow cross section reinforced concrete bridge pier, and to investigate the effect of longitudinal reinforcement ratios on the failure behavior. Four octagonal hollow section RC bridge columns of small scale model were tested under a quasi-static cyclically reversed horizontal load with constant axial load. The volumetric ratio of transverse spiral hoop of all specimens was maintained constant(0.206%), the ratios of longitudinal reinforcement were varied(2.36 ~ 4.71%). Failure behavior and seismic performance were investigated. Three specimens with the exception of lap spliced specimen showed flexure-shear failure at final stage. The test results with the exception of lap spliced specimen showed that the displacement ductility factor and accumulated energy dissipation decreased in inverse proportion to the ratio of longitudinal steel.
