  • The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the characteristics of Japanese idioms which are difficult for Korean learners of Japanese as a foreign language (JFL), as Japanese idioms often contain non-compositional, non-analyzable, and unmotivated semantic units. Specifically, this study aims to underscore the nature of Japanese idioms used in the spoken language of Omurahama (2010) to determine whether JFL learners who speak Korean as their first language encounter difficultly, and to observe similarities and differences between Manga (Kim2018) and daily conversation (Ohama2010). Finally, this study suggests strategic learning guidelines for JFL learners who speak Korean as their first language. The results of this study can be summarized into the following three points: 1) It should be pointed out that the JFL learners who speak Korean as their first language felt that understanding Japanese idioms was less difficult than other foreign language idioms for the following reasons: the 28% of Japanese idioms can be translated totally and literally, the 59% can be translated partially and literally, the 9% can be understood through the origins of idioms and Japanese cultural background, and only 3% can be considered non-analyzable. 2) There are similarities and differences between Manga and daily conversation in spoken language that were used to create the guidelines for this study. 3) Given the findings, three strategic learning guidelines are suggested.

  • In this paper, dialogic triphone data base construction for triphone synthesis system is discussed. Particularly, in this work, dialogic speech data is collected from the broadcast media, and three different transcription steps are taken. Total 10 hours of speech data are collected. Among them, six hours of speech data are used for the triphone data base construction, and the rest four hours of data are reserved. Dialogic speech data base construction is far different from the reciting speech data base construction. This paper describes various steps that necessary for the dialogic triphone data base construction from collecting speech data to triphone unit labeling.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop Korean Consonant Perception Test (KCPT), that is a phonemic level including elementary data to evaluate speech and consonant perception ability of the normal and the hearing impaired qualitatively and quantitatively. KCPT was completed with meaningful monosyllabic words out of possible all Korean monosyllabic words, considering articulation characteristics, the degree of difficulty, and the frequency of the phonemic appearance, after assembling a tentative initial and final consonants testing items using four multiple-choice method which were applied to the seven final consonant regulation and controlled with the familiarity of the target words. Conclusively, the final three hundred items were developed including two- and one-hundred items for initial and final testing items, respectively, with the evaluation of the 20 normal hearing adults. Through this process, the final KCPT was composed upon the colloquial frequency following identification of no speakers' variances statistically and elimination of the highly difficult items. The 30 hearing impaired were tested with KCPT and found that the half lists, A and B, were not different statistically and the initial and final testing items were appropriate for evaluating initial and final consonants, respectively.

The linguistic and cultural phenomena derived from the interpretative ambiguity in the traditional Catalan time telling expressions (카탈루냐어의 전통적 시각표현의 해석적 모호성과 관련된 언어-문화적 현상)

  • In this study, according to the Institut d'Estudis Catalan, it is noted that the traditional Catalan time telling system is essentially based on delineating time by the use of the 'quarts (=quarters)' of an hour. In this fasion, to tell the time 8:15, 8:30 and 8:45 they use '${\acute{E}}s$ un quart de nou.,' '$S{\acute{o}}n$ dos quarts de nou.,' and '$S{\acute{o}}n$ tres quarts de nou.,' but do not use constructions such as '$S{\acute{o}}n$ les vuit i quinze.,' '$S{\acute{o}}n$ les vuit i trenta/mitja.,' '$S{\acute{o}}n$ les vuit i quaranta-cinc.,' because these expressions are considered to be as dialectal variants or international notation-based variants. Moreover, the traditional Catalan time telling system does not use cardinal numbers, except in the case of 'cinc (five)' and 'deu (ten).' These linguistic phenomenon cause the invention of a unique Catalan digital watch, and has noted special designs for the creation of a Catalan analogue watch. For this reason, the quarter system in colloquial Catalan provokes an enormous interpretative ambiguity in daily routine expressions with 'quarts' like '$S{\acute{o}}n$ quarts of nou.' or 'entre dos i tres quarts' whose meaning is not delineated between sixteen and forty-four minutes. We will argue that the traditional Catalan time telling expressions do not have the use of the subtractive system, and the fraction word 'quart' lacks a specific meaning of fifteen minutes because the Catalan word 'quart' is etymologically related to the classical public bell system, not definitively to the traditional clock system.
