A numerical analysis to predict the flow characteristics in turbo fan for vacuum cleaner has been performed by using CFD. The rotating reference frame method is applied to compute the impeller-diffuser interaction and the characteristics of two models, 460 and 380, are calculated for various rotating speeds and flow rates. The flow in impeller, diffuser and return channel is assumed as steady and compressible. STAR-CD with k- $\epsilon$ turbulence model is used to solve the Navier-Stokes equations. Computed relative velocity, absolute pressure and flow angles are shown and compared with measurement results. The good agreement between the predictions and measurement results confirms the validity of this study.
In a fan design, CFD analysis, which is very useful for mechanical design relating to the heat and fluid dynamics, is one of the most popular tools. However, since the CFD analysis is conventionally carried out with the constant fan speed condition, the speed change, induced by the air flow rate and motor characteristics, is hardly modeled. And, consequently, the remarkable difference exist between analysis and experimental results. In this paper, we has proposed a method of setting the varying fan speed as a boundary condition considering air flow rate and motor torque-speed characteristics. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by comparison with experimental results.

In this paper a method for analysing aerodynamic characteristics of a rotating parachute in steady descending motion is presented. Because of a complex geometric configuration of the parachute associated with side vents and discontinuous skirts, special procedure was adopted th handle the geometry in the analysis. A panel method was successfully applied to the present problem and yielded good results using above procedure. A CFD code using the full Navier-Stokes equations was also applied and provided good results. Parachute free drop and wind tunnel tests were performed to determine the fully developed canopy configuration and aerodynamic characteristics. The method can be used for optimizing the parachute size and side vent configurations in the design period.
Numerical analysis were made for the unsteady flow fields of the rotor system of a Tilt-Rotor aircraft in cruise mode. The Reynolds-averaged thin-layer Wavier-Stokes equations were discretized by Roe's upwind differencing scheme and integrated in time by the LU-SGS algorithm. The computational domain of the rotor system was constructed by seven multi-block Chimera grids. Comparison of pressure coefficient on the surface of the main wing and blades were made for 3cases of advance ratio(0.325, 0.350, 0.375) and thrust and power coefficients for the rotor were compared with experimental data.

A numerical model is employed for design of a spinner device to dry the 5-th generation LCD glass panel. The turbulent flow in a spinner is driven by rotation of a large disk and suction by the exhaust system connected to vacuum chamber, which is simulated by using the FLUENT package. Based on numerical simulation, the required capacity of exhaust system is assessed. The effects of the presence of cover on the flow characteristics are examined. A computational trouble shooting is attempted to resolve the problem of panel rising which occurred in real experiments.

The effects of radiation damping is used to compensate the truncated boundary which is relatively close to the structure-fluid interface in the fluid element surrounding the submerged structures. An efficient ring element is presented to model the shell and fluid element which fully utilizes the characteristics of the axisymmetry. The computational model uses the technique which separate the meridional shape and circumferential wave mode and gets similar result with the exact solution in the eigenvalues and the earthquake analysis. The fluid-structure interaction techniques is developed in the finite element analysis of two dimensional problems using the relations between pressure, nodal unknown acceleration and added mass assuming the fluid to be invicid, incompressible and irrotational. The effectiveness and efficiency of the technique is demonstrated by analyzing the free vibration and seismic analysis using the added mass matrix considering the structural deformation effect.
This paper is an extension of previous study[1] on a development of a divergence-free element method using a hermite interpolated stream function. Divergence-free velocity bases defined on rectangles derived herein produce pointwise divergence-free flow fields. Hence the explicit imposition of continuity constraint is not necessary and the Galerkin finite element formulation for velocities does not involve the pressure. The divergence-free element of the previous study employed hermite (serendipity) cubic for interpolation of stream function, and it has been noted a possible discontinuity in variables along element interfaces. This deficiency can be removed by use of a hermite bicubic interpolated stream function, which requires four degrees-of-freedom at each element corners. Those degrees-of-freedom are the unknown variable, its x- and y-derivatives and its cross derivative. Detailed derivations are presented for both solenoidal and irrotational basis functions from the hermite bicubic interpolated stream function. Numerical tests are performed on the lid-driven cavity flow, and results are compared with those from hermite serendipity cubics and a stabilized finite element method by Illinca et al[2].
The present study investigated local pressure drop in a rotating smooth square duct with turning region. The duct has a hydraulic diameter $(D_h)$ of 26.7mm and a divider wall of 6.0mm or $0.225D_h$. The distance between the tip of the divider and the outer wall of the duct is $1.0D_h$. The Reynolds number (Re) based on the hydraulic diameter is kept constant at 10,000, and the rotation number (Ro) is varied from 0.0 to 0.20. The pressure coefficient distribution $(C_p)$, the friction factor (f) and the thermal performance $({\eta})$ are presented on the leading, the trailing and the outer surfaces. It is found that the curvature of the $180^{\circ}-turn$ produces Dean vortices that cause the high pressure drop in the turning region. The duct rotation results in the pressure coefficient discrepancy between the leading and trailing surfaces. That is, the high pressure values appear on the trailing surface in the first-pass and on the leading and side surfaces in the second-pass. As the rotation number increases, the pressure discrepancy enlarges. In the fuming region, a pair of the Dean vortices in the stationary case transform into one large asymmetric vortex cell, and then the pressure drop characteristics also change.

This paper describes the measurement of performance evaluation of rotational flow varying chamber size and Reynolds number. Through the experimental visualization of the flow rotation, the number and position of flow rotation in the $2{\times}2$ microfluidic centrifuge were examined. At a chamber width of 250${\mu}m$, single flow rotation was obtained over at a Reynolds number of 300, while at a chamber width of 500 ${\mu}m$, single flow rotation did not appear. For performance evaluation, the intensity in microchamber was measured during 20 sec. At a chamber width of 250 ${\mu}m$, performance of rotational flow increased as Reynolds number increased. However, the variation of intensity in microchamber remained unchanged at a chamber width of 500 ${\mu}m$. The numerical analysis showed that the threshold centrifugal acceleration to obtain rotational flow for ejected particles was 200g.
The heat transfer and pressure loss characteristics of a rotating two-pass channel with a guide vane in the turning region have been studied using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) analysis, and the shape of the guide vane has been optimized using surrogate modeling optimization technique. For the optimization, thickness, location and angle of the guide vanes have been selected as design variables. The objective function has been defined as a linear combination of the heat transfer and the friction loss related terms with a weighting factor. Latin hypercube sampling has been applied to determine the design points as design of experiments. A weighted-average surrogate model, PBA has been used as the surrogate model. The guide vane in the turning region does not influence the heat transfer in the first passage upstream of the turning region, but enhances largely the heat transfer in the turning region and the second passage. In an example of the optimization, the objective function has been increased by 13.6%.
