  • Lattice preferred orientation (LPO), which shows a specific lattice-orientation of minerals, is affected by the deformation conditions of minerals. Because of this reason, LPO is very useful to study the deformation conditions of the minerals and the rocks. In this study, we collected amphibole-rich rocks from the Geumgye Mountain, Chugye-ri, Yugu-eup, Chungcheongnamdo, located in the southwestern part of the Gyeonggi Massif, and analyzed the LPO of amphibole and plagioclase using electron backscattered diffraction. Two types of LPOs of amphibole, type I and type IV, were observed in Yugu amphibole-rich rocks. Our data suggest that the amphibole-rich rocks in Yugu were deformed by rigid body rotation regardless of the LPOs and grain size of amphibole, and the LPOs are considered to have been affected by the degree of deformation (i.e. strain). In the low strained amphibole-rich rock, a strong type I LPO and a large grain size of amphibole were observed. On the other hand, in the highly strained amphibole-rich rocks, a weak type IV LPO and a small grain size of amphibole were observed. The various degree of deformation observed in the Yugu amphibole-rich rocks were also observed in the adjacent peridotites, indicating that the rocks in Yugu experienced various levels of deformation.

  • In order to increase the use of electric vehicles (EVs) and minimize grid strain, microgrid using renewable energy must take an important role. Microgrid may use fossil fuels such as small diesel power, but in many cases, they can be supplied with energy from renewable energy, which is an eco-friendly energy source. However, renewable energy such as solar and wind power have variable output characteristics. Therefore, in order to meet the charging and discharging energy demands of electric vehicles and at the same time supply load power stably, it is necessary to review the configuration of electric vehicle charging infrastructure that utilizes diesel power or electric vehicle-to-grid (V2G) as a parallel energy source in the microgrid. Against this background, this study modelized a microgrid that can stably supply power to loads using solar power, wind power, diesel power, and V2G. The proposed microgrid uses solar power and wind power generation as the primary supply energy source to respond to power demand, and determines the operation type of the load's electric vehicles and the rotation speed of the load synchronous machine to provide stable power from diesel power for insufficient generations. In order to verify the system performance of the proposed model, we studied the stable operation plan of the microgrid by simulating it with MATLAB /Simulink.

  • Severe skeletal anteroposterior and vertical discrepancy is difficult to obtain satisfactory result by only orthodontic treatment, and much anteroposterior movement and treatment stability require orthodontic treatment with orthognathic surgery. The treatment goal of mandibular prognathic patients is to promote the function of stomatognathic system including mastication and phonetics, to improve the esthetics of facial profile and to maintain stability. Positional changes of hyoid bone, pharynx and tongue were seen with mandibular movement after orthognathic surgery. This study was performed to observe the changes of perimandibular tissues of orthodontic patients with skeletal mandibular prognathism who treated with orthodontic treatment, and the changes of hyoid bone, pharyx and tongue by relapse or recurrance after before and after orthognathic surgery and retention. The 22 patients who had mandibular prognathism were selected. They treated with orthodontic treatment with sagittal split ramus osteotomy as orthognathic surgery. And lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken 3 times : pre-surgery (T1), immediate post-surgery (T2) and 2 years alter retention (T3). The results were as follows : 1. The hyoid bone returned back after clockwise rotation to maxilla and occlusal plane during retention (P<0.01). 2. The hyoid bone moved posterior-inferiorly by mandibular surgery and returned back anterior-superior after retention. (P<0.01) 3. The changes of pharyngeal depth showed a little decrease at upper area in post- surgery, but it was not a significant difference generally through before, after and retention. 4. In relating to tongue base, the angle of tongue base was decreased and the dorsal area of tongue base moved to inferior-posterior direction and to superior direction again after retention (P<0.01). 5. Related to the thickness of upper and lower lip, the thickness of upper lip decreased after surgery, and the soft tissues below lower lip increased after surgery and decreased after retention.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to report a result of the technique that reconstruct posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) and posterolateral corner (PLC) simultaneously using a fresh-frozen Achilles tendon allograft. Materials and Methods: Forty two patients (45 legs) underwent PCL and PLC reconstruction were included. There were 38 males and 4 females. Mean age was 39 years. Used graft was a fresh frozen Achilles tendon allograft, which was divided by two size, larger one (${\emptyset}$ 10 mm) for PCL reconstruction and smaller one (${\emptyset}$ 8 mm) for PLC reconstruction. Arthroscopic reconstruction of the PCL was performed using transtibial, single incision, and single bundle technique with 10mm fresh frozen Achilles allograft tendon first. After PCL reconstruction, reconstruction procedure for posterolateral instability was performed using modified figure of "8" technique using smaller gtaft. For clinical evaluation, range of motion, posterior drawer test, varus stress test, prone external rotation (dial) test, Lysholm score, Tegner activity scale and posterior stress radiograph were used. Mean follow up period was 25 months. Results: Preoperatively posterior drawer test was 5 cases in grade II and 40 cases in grade III posterior instability. At final follow-up 22 cases returned within normal condition, 18 cases grade I and 5 cases grade II posterior instability. Though all patients showed positive result over 10 degrees in dial and varus stress test preoperatively, but only 9 cases showed positive both test at final follow-up. The range of motion deficit over $10^{\circ}$ flexion was 3 cases. Lysholm score was improved from mean 50 preoperatively to mean 83(p<0.05) and Tegner activity scale improved from mean 2.1 preoperatively to mean 4.6(p<0.05). In posterior stress radiographs, posterior displacement was improve from mean 16mm preoperatively to 4.1mm after treatment(p<0.05). All patients had improved compared to their pre-operative status as measured by physical examination such as posterior drawer test, varus stress test, dial test. Conclusion: We had successful results by combined reconstruction of the PCL & PLC with a fresh frozen Achilles tendon allograft in patients with PCL and posterolateral rotatory instability at a time.

  • We determined $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ ages of the Tertiary dike swarms and volcanic rocks distributed in the SE Korea where the most prevalent crustal-deformation and volcanism occurred during the period. In previous study, it was disclosed that the mafic dike swarms on both sides (east and west) of the Yeonil Tectonic Line (YTL) were originated from a same magma although they are consistently aligned with different intrusion directions of NS and NE, respectively. Ages of the mafic dike swarms of this study are $47.3\pm0.8Ma$ and $48.0\pm1.3Ma$, respectively and confirm such conclusion. These facts clarify that the YTL acted as a westernmost limit of the crustal deformation, especially clockwise crust-rotation, during the Miocene. Frequent occurrence of basic dikes indicate strongly that the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula was under E-W extensional stress field at about 48 Ma, intimately related to the India-Asia collision and subsequent sudden change of the Pacific Plate motion. The ages of the uncommonly appearing intermediate and felsic dikes were determined as $55.9\pm1.5Ma$ and $53.0\pm1.0Ma$, respectively. Ages of the andesitic lava of the Hyodongri Volcanics, the dacitic lava of the Yongdongri Tuff, and dacitic rocks intruding and covering the Churyeong Breccia were determined as $24.0\pm0.5Ma,\;21.6\pm0.4Ma$, $21.8\pm0.1Ma,\;and\;22.0\pm0.5Ma$ respectively. The ages from the volcanics agrees well with the stratigraphy established by the latest field survey, which confirms that the $andesitic\~dacitic$ volcanism was followed by the basaltic volcanism during the Early Miocene.

  • The Jurassic Daebo Ogcheon granite is distributed in the Ogcheon area which is located in the central part of the Ogcheon Belt, Korea. This paper newly examines the timing of Honam shearing on the basis of the petrofabric researches on the deformation structures of the Ogcheon granite. The structural shape of Ogcheon granite is mainly characterized by a wedge shaped of E-W trend and an elongate shape of ENE trend in geological map and by contacts parallel to the regional S1 foliation in the host Ogcheon supergroup. It indicates that the pluton was permittedly emplaced after the S1 formation. The main deformation structures are marked by a solid-state tectonic foliation of N-S trend, which passes through the contact of the pluton, and by an aplitic dyke of E-W trend, and by sinistral, NW and E-W oriented shear zones on the eastern border of the pluton. The petrofabric study on the main deformation structures suggests that the tectonic foliation and the aplitic dyke were formed by the Honam dextral strike-slip shearing of (N)NE trend at ca. $500{\sim}450^{\circ}C$ deformation temperature, and that the sinistral shear zones could be induced by the dextral rotation of the pluton from its original site of intrusion, that is, by the shear strain which is due to sliding of the pluton past the host rocks. The history of emplacement and deformation of the Ogcheon granite and the previous results on the timing of Honam shearing would be newly established and reviewed as follows. (1) Early~Middle Jurassic(187~170 Ma); intrusion of syntectonic foliated granite related to Early Honam shearing, (2) Middle Jurassic(175~166 Ma); main magmatic period of Jurassic granitoids, the permitted emplacement of the Ogcheon granite, (3) Middle~Late Jurassic(168~152 Ma); main cooling period of Jurassic granitoids, the deformation of the Ogcheon granite related to Late Honam shearing. Thus, this study proposes that the Honam shear movement would occur two times at least during 187~152 Ma (ca. 35 Ma) through the intertectonic phase of 175~166 Ma.

  • The present study hypothesized that the double keyhole looped archwire plays a positive role for the sake of translatory movement and/or controlled tipping of upper 6 anteriors, and secures anchorage control as well. The purposes of the study were to evaluate the changes in lateral cephalograms during orthodontic treatment with DKHLs and to compare the skeletal & dental changes before- & after-treatment. The materials of this study were lateral cephalograms of 20 adult patients with upper dentoalveolar protrusion both in class I and in class II Division1 malocclusion. Lateral cephalograms were taken before and after orthodontic treatment with upper 1st bicuspid extraction and DKHLs. The results were obtained as follows : 1. There were no statistically significant differences in skeletal measurement except SNB and PTFH between before- & after-treatment. The major changes were in dentoalveolar region. 2. After treatment, there were statistically significant decrease in dental measurement except interincisal angle. 3. Both upper & lower lip protrusion was decreased. 4. There were statistically differences in upper anterior crown horizontal & root vertical dimension(7.08 ${\pm}$ 2.14 mm, 2.38 ${\pm}$ 1.15 mm, p<0.01). 5. There were statistically differences in upper posterior dental(both crown & root) horizontal dimension(2.48 ${\pm}$ 0.99 mm, 2.05 ${\pm}$ 0.91 mm, p<0.01).

  • Objective: The result of finite element analysis depends on material properties, structural expression, density of element, and boundar or loading conditions. To represent proper elastic behavior, a finite element model was made using Hounsfield unit (HU) values in CT images. Methods: A 13 year 6 month old male was used as the subject. A 3 dimensional visualizing program, Mimics, was used to build a 3D object from the DICOM file which was acquired from the CT images. Model 1 was established by giving 24 material properties according to HU. Model 2 was constructed by the conventional method which provides 2 material properties. Protraction force of 500g was applied at a 45 degree downward angle from Frankfort horizontal (FH) plane. Results: Model 1 showed a more flexible response on the first premolar region which had more forward and downward movement of the maxillary anterior segment. Maxilla was bent on the sagittal plane and frontal plane. Model 2 revealed less movement in all directions. It moved downward on the anterior part and upward on the posterior part, which is clockwise rotation of the maxilla. Conclusion: These results signify that different outcomes of finite element analysis can occur according to the given material properties and it is recommended to use HU values for more accurate results.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate if there is a relationship between anterior disc displacement without reduction and development of anterior open bite, and a relation between occurrence of open bite and occlusal appliance therapy. In general, the statistically significant differences were found between the Group 1 and 2 and normal mean group. The variables that represent mandibular size and form, showed a statistical significance in all 3 groups. Also 3 groups patients had a smaller ANB, a larger FMA than normal mean group. When we compared the 3 groups with respect to all cephalometric measurements by One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), group 1 and 2 patients had a larger FMA, a larger SN to mandibular plane angle, a larger maxillomandibular plane angle, a larger occlusal plane to mandibular plane angle, a smaller total posterior facial height/total anterior facial height(%), and a larger gonial angle than group 3. The statistically significant differences were not found between the Group 1 and 2, and skeletal patterns were similar. Thus, morphologic features of patients with vertical discrepancies may represent a risk factor for the development of anterior open bite with or without occlusal appliance treatment. In case of patients with vertical discrepancy, we may have to be more careful when inducing a change of the vertical dimension.

  • Purpose: Perinatal mortality rates have been used as a summary statistic for evaluating child health and medical status. Neonatal mortality rates have decreased over the past 30 years in Korea. To understand the current status of neonatal surgical gastrointestinal diseases in Daegu Busan area, we have studied about neonatal gastrointestinal diseases with their clinical features, postoperative outcome, and mortality rates. Methods: A clinical analysis on 202 neonates who underwent neonatal surgery from January 1996 to July 2003 at Pusan National University, Kyungpook National University, Youngnam University, and Daegu Catholic University was carried out. Results: The main diseases of surgical conditions were anorectal malformation (23.8%), atresia/stenosis of midgut (13.4%) and pyloric stenosis (13.4%). The male to female ratio was 2.8 : 1. Thirty-five cases (17.0%) had one or more associated anomalies including congenital heart disease, cryptoorchidism, hydronephrosis, and chromosomal anomaly. Twenty cases (10.0%) were diagnosed by antenatal ultrasound. Patients with esophageal atresia had the longest hospitalization for 54.6 days. Postoperative complications occurred in 18 cases (8.9%). The main postoperative complications were wound infection (3.5%) and anastomotic leakage (2.5%). Overall mortality was 5.9%. Diaphragmatic hernia showed the highest mortality rate (37.5%), and esophageal atresia (28.6%) and omphalocele (20.0%) were followed. Conclusion: The current status of neonatal surgical gastrointestinal diseases in Daegu Busan area has improved because the disease categories are various, postoperative complications and mortality rates are decreased.
