  • A simple design method for rib-reinforced seismic steel moment connections has been recently proposed based on the equivalent strut model. An experimental program was implemented to verify the proposed design method, as well as develop the schemes that will prevent cracking at the rib tip where stress concentration was evident. All specimens designed using the proposed method were able to develop a satisfactory connection plastic rotation of 0.04 radian. In addition to rib reinforcement, slight beam flange trimming pushed the plastic hinging and local buckling of the beam away from the rip tip and effectively reduced cracking potential at the rib tip. Using strain gage readings, the strut action of the rib and resulting reverse shear in the beam web were also experimentally identified.

  • This study aims to experimentally investigate the characteristics of secondary flows in a natural channel. For this objective, various conditions of water discharge and depth are tested in a real-scale experimental channel which has 1.2 of meandering. From results of experiments, it is observed that the maximum flow velocity exists in the outer zone of ben. This result is different from the previous studies conducted with laboratory experiments. The bank of 1:2 slope replicating the condition of natural channel is considered to cause this result. The location of the maximum flow velocity moves to the center of channel as the channel changes to be straight. It is also known from this study that two vorteces coexist on the left and right banks of bend.

  • Generally, the steel rigid frame has been analyzed using finite element analysis tools. While many efforts have been poured into the understanding and accurate prediction for the nonlinear behavior of the columns and beam-columns connections, the base of the columns are modeled as simply hinged or fixed. However, the base of the steel columns practically is neither fixed not hinged. It behaves as semi-rigid. In this paper, the supports of the columns we modeled as semi-rigid and the importance of such approach in moment-resisting columns is evaluated. Two typical buildings designed by the US specification are modeled and analyzed by the finite element based on stiffness method and flexibility method. The column bases of three-story buildings are modeled as rotational springs with a varying degree of stiffness and strength that simulates the semi-rigidity of the base. Depending on the degree of stiffness and strength, the semi-rigidity varies from the hinged to the fixed. Buildings with semi-rigid column bases behaves similarly to the building with fixed bases. It has been numerically observed through the pushover and nonlinear time history analyses that the decrease of the stiffness of the column base induces the rotational demand on the int air beams. an increase of rotation demands on the first store connections and lead to a soft-story mechanists Due often to the construction and environmental effects, undesired reduction of column base stiffness may cause an increase of rotation demands on the first store connections and lead to a soft-story mechanism.

  • The present study investigated local pressure drop in a rotating smooth square duct with turning region. The duct has a hydraulic diameter $(D_h)$ of 26.7mm and a divider wall of 6.0mm or $0.225D_h$. The distance between the tip of the divider and the outer wall of the duct is $1.0D_h$. The Reynolds number (Re) based on the hydraulic diameter is kept constant at 10,000, and the rotation number (Ro) is varied from 0.0 to 0.20. The pressure coefficient distribution $(C_p)$, the friction factor (f) and the thermal performance $({\eta})$ are presented on the leading, the trailing and the outer surfaces. It is found that the curvature of the $180^{\circ}-turn$ produces Dean vortices that cause the high pressure drop in the turning region. The duct rotation results in the pressure coefficient discrepancy between the leading and trailing surfaces. That is, the high pressure values appear on the trailing surface in the first-pass and on the leading and side surfaces in the second-pass. As the rotation number increases, the pressure discrepancy enlarges. In the fuming region, a pair of the Dean vortices in the stationary case transform into one large asymmetric vortex cell, and then the pressure drop characteristics also change.

  • The heat transfer and pressure loss characteristics of a rotating two-pass channel with a guide vane in the turning region have been studied using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) analysis, and the shape of the guide vane has been optimized using surrogate modeling optimization technique. For the optimization, thickness, location and angle of the guide vanes have been selected as design variables. The objective function has been defined as a linear combination of the heat transfer and the friction loss related terms with a weighting factor. Latin hypercube sampling has been applied to determine the design points as design of experiments. A weighted-average surrogate model, PBA has been used as the surrogate model. The guide vane in the turning region does not influence the heat transfer in the first passage upstream of the turning region, but enhances largely the heat transfer in the turning region and the second passage. In an example of the optimization, the objective function has been increased by 13.6%.

  • Unstiffened seated connections (USC) ensure easy installation and safety during erection, thereby making the process more economical. USCs consist of a seat angle for carrying the beam's reactions and a top angle to provide beam stability. These angles are bolted or welded to the beam and supporting member. This paper sought to propose a design table for the weld strength of such connections obtained from the elastic vector method (EVM) and the instantaneous center-of-rotation method (ICM) in terms of calculating the eccentricity. Also, the proposed design table is compared with both AISC and KBC specifications.

  • The sensorless speed control technique for BLDC motor using digital IP control is proposed in this paper for advanced speed characteristic which is robust to motor parameters and load variations. The sensorless drive of BLDC motor using terminal voltages is affected by load or speed because it uses analog filters to estimate the rotor position. For this reason, the robust speed controller with the accurate rotor position estimator is needed for sensorless control which is robust to load and insensitive to motor parameters. The constant speed robust to load variation and the stable sensorless control of BLDC motor robust to the increase or decrease of speed with constant load is implemented using digital IP control in this paper. The validity to these is established with experimentation.

  • The present study investigates the pressure drop characteristics in rotating two-pass ducts. The duct has an aspect ratio (W/H) of 0.5 and a hydraulic diameter $(D_h)$ of 26.67mm. Rib turbulators are attached crossly in the four different arrangements on the leading and trailing surfaces of the test ducts. The ribs have a rectangular cross section of $2mm(e){\times}3mm(w)$ and an attack angle of $70^{\circ}C$. The pitch-to-rib height ratio (pie) is 7.5, and the rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio $(e/D_h)$ is 0.075. The results show that the highest pressure drop among each region appears in the turning region for the stationary case, but appears in the upstream region of the second pass for the rotating case. Effects of cross rib arrangements are almost the same in the first pass for the stationary and rotating cases. In the second pass, however, heat transfer and pressure drop are high for the cases with cross NN or PP type ribs in the stationary ducts. In the rotating ducts, they are high for the cases with cross NP or PP type ribs.
