Synovial chondromatosis is a benign nodular cartilaginous proliferation arising in the synovium of joints. The radiolographic features of this condition are variable. Rarely, it would be confused with malignancy such as chondrosarcoma, osteosarcoma or synovial sarcoma. We report a case of primary synovial chondromatosis of the posterior aspect of the proximal tibia mimicking a parosteal osteoarcoma on the radiography, which showed a homogeneously radiopaque juxtacortical mass. However, subsequent computed tomography (CT) showed multiple intra-articular masses containing chondroid mineralization, suggesting synovial chondromatosis.
A magnetic resonance imaging test was performed on a 56-year-old male patient, who visited with a one-month history of painless swelling at the popliteal area of the left knee. A popliteal cyst and non-calcified loose body in the cyst were identified. Synovial chondromatosis was diagnosed from a histology examination by excision and biopsy. This paper reports this case of extra-articular synovial chondromatosis of the knee with a review of the relevant literature.

the primary diagnosis of synovial chondromatosis of temporomandibular joint is extremely rare. often many months, or even years pass before the diagnosis is confirmed. synovial chondromatosis is an uncommon disease of cartilage transformation of synovial membrane with formation of loose bodies within the joint space. a 28-year-old women had experienced pain of the left TMJ area at mastication. Radiographs of the left TMJ revealed calcified loose bodies in superior temporomandibular joint space. treatment consisted of removal of calcified loose bodies and synovail membrane. after surgery, pain of Lt temporomandibular area at mastication disappeared. until present after surgery there have been no recuurence of symptoms.
Extra-skeletal chondroma, characterized by its lack of connection with the adjacent bone, includes synovial chondromatosis, intra-articular and para-articular chondroma, and soft tissue chondroma. Among them, the last two lesions are extremely rare. This is the case about 20-year-old soldier, who had complained of tenderness of the knee, pain and fullness during knee flexion and limitation of motion after a hard military training. We found a mass in the x-ray and MRI and resect the mass surgically, which was a $5.5{\times}4{\times}3$ cm size hard solitary mass. On microscopic finding, it was consisted of lobulated hyaline cartilage and outer fibrous capsule, and we ascertained it as para-articular chondroma. We experienced a case of para-articular chondroma in the infrapatellar fat pad of the knee joint and present its clinical, radiologic and pathologic findings with literature review.

The authors reviewed and analyzed the pathologically confirmed 230 cases of benign soft tissue tumors which had been treated at Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Seoul Hospital, Hanyang University College of Medicine from February 1984 to November 1997. The following results were obtained. 1. The most common benign soft tissue tumors was ganglion(26.5%) followed by hemangioma(19.6%), lipoma(17.0%), Baker's cyst(13.0%) and neurilemmoma(7.0%) in decreasing order of incidence. 2. Benign soft tissue tumors were found evenly distributed over all age group. Hemangioma and lymphangioma were usually found to occur before 20 years old. 3. Female was affected about 1.3 times more common. But, Baker's cyst and neurilemmoma occurred most frequently in male. 4. In children, the most common benign soft tissue tumors was hemangioma followed by ganglion, lymphangioma, and lipoma. In adult, ganglion, lipoma, Baker's cyst, hemangioma were common. 5. The lower extremity was the predominant site of occurrence(60.0%). 6. Benign soft tissue tumors were taken by excision. Local recurrences were developed in 22(9.6%) out of 230 cases, especially in hemangioma.
Purpose: We evaluated the results of treatment and clinical symptoms of 11 cases of synovial chondromatosis in the ankle joint. Material and Method: From February 2001 to May 2008, 11 cases with synovial chondromatosis involving ankle joint underwent surgical treatment. There were 5 males and 6 females. The average age at surgery was 51 years. The average follow-up period was 42 months. Duration from onset of symptom to treatment was 117 months. Chief complaints of patients, 9 cases were pain and 1 case was mass like lesion, 1 case was found on x-ray. Preoperatively, all cases were evaluated on simple x-ray, 4 cases on CT, 4 cases on MRI and 1 case on ultrasonogram. 10 cases underwent synovectomy and loose body removal. 5 cases of 10 cases underwent open synovectomy and loose body removal and arthrosocpic surgery. 4 cases of 10 cases underwent only open synovectomy and loose body removal and 1 case of 10 cases underwent only arthroscopic surgery. 1 case underwent tibiotalar arthrodesis. Results: The location of loose bodies was 7 cases on posterior and 4 cases on anterior and 4 case on lateral and 3 cases on multiple site. Postoperatively, all patients showed marked clinical improvement and had subjective satisfaction except reoperation 2 cases and arthrodesis 1 case. AOFAS score of all patients was average 82.2. Conclusion: Clinical results of the synovial chondromatosis of ankle joint were satisfactory. More accurate preoperative evaluation is required to achieve prevention of postoperative recurrence and better outcome.
Temporomandibular joint cysts usually occur between the second and fourth decade of life. There is a female predominance to male of approximately 3 to 1. The patients complain of swelling, pain and sometimes decreased mouth opening. Synovial cysts of the temporomandibular joint seem to develop by an increase of intraarticular pressure due to trauma or inflammation which causes capsular herniation. However, if inflammatory synovial cysts develop by an increase of synovial fluid into inflammation tissue in the capsule without capsular herniation, a differential diagnosis should include synovial chondromatosis and synovitis. This is a case report of a synovial cyst developed in a capsule of the temporomandibular joint.
