  • In this study, single-stage continuous anaerobic reactors to treat sewage sludge were operated under different temperature (55 and $35^{\circ}C$; $R_{TAD}$ and $R_{MAD}$) to evaluate the reactor stability and performance of the thermophilic and mesophilic anaerobic digestion. During the overall digestion, both anaerobic reactors maintained quite stable and constant pH and total alkalinity (TA) values in the range of 6.5-8.0 and 3-4 g $CaCO_3/L$, respectively. After the start-up period, $R_{TAD}$ showed 10% higher VS removal efficiency than that of $R_{MAD}$ ($R_{TAD}$; 43.3%; $R_{MAD}$ : 33.6%). Although organic acids such as acetic and propionic acid were detected in both anaerobic reactors at the start-up period, all organic acids in $R_{TAD}$ and $R_{MAD}$ were consumed at the steady state condition. Also $R_{TAD}$ showed 31.4 % higher methane production rate (MPR) than that of $R_{MAD}$ at the steady state condition ($R_{TAD}$; 243 mL $CH_4/L/d$; $R_{MAD}$ : 185 mL $CH_4/L/d$). Meanwhile, the experimental results indicated similar methane yield between $R_{TAD}$ and $R_{MAD}$.

  • Composting of N-rich wastes such as food waste and wastewater sludges can be associated loss of with substantial gaseous N, which means loss of an essential plant nutrient but may also lead to environmental pollution. We investigated the behavior of nitrogenous materials during the first high-rate phase in composting of food waste. Air dried food waste was mixed with shredded waste paper or wood chip and reacted in a bench scale composting reactor. Samples were analyzed for pH, ammonia, oxidized nitrogen and organic nitrogen. The volatilized ammonia nitrogen was also analyzed using sulfuric acid as an absorbent solution. Initial progress of composting reaction greatly influenced the ammonification of organic nitrogen. A well-balanced composting reaction with an addition of active compost as an inoculum resulted in the promoted mineralization of organic nitrogen and volatilization of ammonia. The prolongation of initial low pH period delayed the production of ammonia. It was also found that nitrogen loss was highly dependent on the air flow supplied. With an increase in input air flow, the loss of nitrogen as an ammonia also increased, resulted in substantial reduction of ammonia content in compost. The conversion ratio of initial nitrogen into ammonia was in the range of 28 to 38% and about 77~94% of the ammonia produced was escaped as a gas. Material balance on the nitrogenous materials was demonstrated to provide an information of importance on the behavior of nitrogen in composting reaction.

  • To improve wastewater treatment in a confectionery factory and to optimize chemical coagulation process, this study was performed. $COD_{Mn}$ and total solid of untreated wastewater were $200{\sim}820ppm\;and\;860{\sim}1350ppm$, respectively. Composition of total solid was sugar 40%, protein 10%, hexane-soluble 20%, and ash 30%. Turbidity at 650 nm and the amount of suspended solid (SS) showed correlation, thus turbidity could be used for the on-line measurement of SS. The most effective combination of coagulants for the removal of $COD_{Mn}$ and SS was that of $Al_2(SO_4)_3\;and\;Ca(OH)_2$. The optimal concentration of $Al_2(SO_4)_3\;and\;Ca(OH)_2$ was 480 ppm and 200 ppm, respectively. Optimal retention time of wastewater for $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ addition $Ca(OH)_2$ addition : flocculation was 2 : 2 : 10 min. Multiple treatment of $Al_2(SO_4)_3:Ca(OH)_2$ overcame coagulation inhibition by gelatin and detergent, and addition of microbial sludge reduced it.

  • The hybrid constructed wetland(HCW) as tertiary treatment process of a bio industrial wastewater treatment plant was employed to estimate applications for the reuse of final effluent. Raw wastewater was sequently treated through chemical and biological treatment processes and the biologically treated water was flowed into the HCW. The HCW system was composed of two constructed wetlands connected in series; The one is the aerobic constructed wetland with natural air draft system whose driving force for air supply was the difference between the temperature of the air inside the wetland and the ambient air, and the other is the anaerobic/anoxic constructed wetland. Average influent concentrations of BOD, SS, T-N and T-P in the HCW were 53mg/L, 48mg/L, 34mg/L and 3mg/L, respectively. After being treated at HCW, final effluent concentrations of BOD, SS, T-N and T-P were 2.3mg/L, 1.2mg/L, 7.95mg/L and 0.83mg/L, respectively. Referring to a reuse standard for a sewage wastewater, final effluent could sufficiently be reuse as landscaping, washing or agriculture water. HCW system with the aerobic/anaerobic combined constructed wetland could be achieved a high removal efficiency because each constructed wetland was functionalized to be removed efficiently organics, nitrogen and phosphorus. HCW system could be estimated to be successful application as tertiary treatment process of a various industrial and municipal wastewater.

  • Indicator bacteria of fecal pollution were enumerated and compared by various detection methods for influent and final effluent of a sewage treatment plant. Total coliforms were enumerated by four methods including most probable numbers, chromogenic enzyme substrate test, membrane filtration, and plate counts and were about $10^4$ for influent and $10^2{\sim}10^3\;CFU/ml$ for final effluent. Fecal coliforms ranged between $10^3$ and $10^4$ for influent and $10^2\;CFU/ml$ for effluent by chromogenic enzyme substrate test and membrane filtration. Fecal streptococci counts were 1-log less than fecal coliforms counts, $10^2{\sim}10^3$ for influent and $10^1\;CFU/ml$ for effluent. Total coliforms numbers by plate count both in influent and in effluent showed 1-log higher than by the other three methods. Statistical analysis revealed that numbers of total coliforms by plate count in final effluent had the highest average of correlation (r=0.778, p<0.01) compared with those by the other three methods. In addition, total coliforms numbers by plate count showed most significant correlation (r=0.835, p<0.01) with those by chromogenic test which is well-known as its highest recovery efficiency. These results suggest that the plate count would be the optimum detection method for total coliforms in wastewater treatment plants which are the only microbiological standard of final effluent from wastewater treatment plants in the Republic of Korea, considering economic aspects and difficulties in laboratories.

  • A mathematical model was developed to predict the concentrations of various nutrients in supernatants during aerobic digestion which is suitable to be employed in small wastewater treatment plants with such advantages as low capital cost and stable process. Significant reactions were determined with observing the behavior of nitrgen and phosphorus, and the model equations were built up in the form of simultaneous differential equations considering Mass Balance. Laboratory batch experiments were carried out at $20^{\circ}C$ and pH $7.5{\pm}0.5$ on the aerobic digestion of waste activated sludge at different solid levels. Nonlinear regression analysis was performed to estimate various reaction rate constants. The developed model can predict the behavior of Biomass N, dissolved organic N, $NH_4{^-}$-N, $NO_x{^-}$-N, and Biomass P, dissolved organic P, $PO_4{^-}$-P in aerobic digestion process. In this study, the results of simulation showed that dissolved nutrients had more effects on supernatants than nutrients in biomass, and phosphorus was more effective on supernatants than nitrogen.

  • An important factor in determining the design and treatment efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is the quantity and quality of influent. These detailed and accurate information is essential for process control, diagnosis and operation, as well as the basis in designing the plant, selecting the process and determining the optimal capacity of each bioreactor. Probabilistic models are used to predict the wastewater quantity and quality of WWTPs, which are widely used to improve the design and operation of WWTPs. In this study, the optimal probability distribution of time series influent data was derived for predicting water quantity and quality, and wastewater influent data were generated using the Monte Carlo simulation analysis. In addition, we estimated various alternatives for the improvement of bioreactor operations based on present operation condition using the generated influent data and activated sludge model, and suggested the alternative that can operate the most effectively. Thus, the influent quantity and quality are highly correlated with the actual operation data, so that the actual WWTPs influent characteristics were well reproduced. Using this will improve the operating conditions of WWTPs, and a proposed improvement plan for the current TMS (Tele Monitoring System) effluent quality standards can be made.

  • Lipase catalyzes the hydrolysis of glycerides into fatty acids and glycerol. The study of microbial lipases has been stimulated in resent years. It is due to the potential uses of lipases in esterification of oils to glycerol, alcohols and carbohydrates. Development of lipase producing yeast has been focused concerning to the utilization of yeast culture for animal feed. In this study, yeast like cells was isolated from a waste oil and sludge. A strain having higher lipase activity was selected by random mutagenesis using UV-radiation. The optimal cultivation conditions in submerged culture were examined in terms of lipase production. 2.0% of high fructose syrup, 1,0% of CSL, and 1.0% of olive oil were selected as the nutritional media for the production of lipase. The maximum lipase activity of 1.12 U/ml and viable cell number of 8.8${\times}$10$\^$7/ cells/mL were obtained at 27$^{\circ}C$ with an initial pH of 5.0.

  • Two sets of four parallel activated sludge reactors (ASRs) maintaining an MLSS of 3000 mg/L were operated to investigate the effect of DO, HRTs and bio-contact media (BCM) packing ratios on the removal efficiency of organic matters and nitrogen. Packing ratios of BCM to BCM-ASR systems 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 0% (suspended growth only), 10%, 15% and 20%, respectively. All systems were operated at an HRT of 4 hr, 6 hr, and 8 hr, respectively; DO concentration was maintained 0.5~1.0 mg/L and 1.5~2.0 mg/L for each HRT condition. In terms of TSS, TCODcr and SCODcr removal efficiency, all systems had a similar level of the removal efficiency under varied HRTs, and DO. But organic removal efficiency of systems with BCM was approximately 3~5% higher than systems without BCM at the same HRT and the DO. About the nitrification efficiency, with high DO (1.5~2.0 mg/L), as HRT (4 hr, 6 hr, 8 hr) or BCM packing ratio increased, the slight increment of nitrification efficiency was observed. However, under the low DO (0.5~1.0 mg/L), increase of BCM packing ratio and HRT resulted in large increase of the nitrification efficiency. At the same HRT and BCM packing ratio, the nitrification efficiency increased greatly with up to 15% as DO increased. When the HRT increased from 4hr to 8hr, the denitrification efficiency slightly increased by 5~10% only, under all DO conditions. Systems with BCM had higher denitrification efficiency, ranged 62.7~91.1% than systems without BCM showed 32.1~65.6%. And the increase in BCM packing ratio from 10% to 20% resulted in about 14~16% denitrification efficiency increment. BCM packing ratio showed great effect on the denitrification. The increase of the DO (from 0.5~1.0 mg/L to 1.5~2.0 mg/L) at the same HRT and BCM packing ratio resulted in slight decrease of denitrification efficiency with up to 7% for systems with BCM. But for systems without BCM, the denitrification efficiency decreased with up to 28%. In all system, the denitrification efficiency had more influence on the TN removal efficiency than nitrification efficiency. So, BCM packing ratio (0%, 10%, 15%, 20%) has greater effect on the TN removal than HRT and DO. The TN removal efficiency increased as packing ratio of BCM increased with up to 45%. As a result, the highest TN removal efficiency was observed 73.7% at the condition showed the highest denitrification efficiency that DO of 0.5~1.0 mg/L, an HRT of 8 hr, and 20% of BCM packing ratio was maintained.

  • The growth characteristics of Commercially Developed Nitrifying Bacteria (CDNB) were studied in laboratoryscale. CDNB, a pure, artificially isolated bacterium, was cultivated to produce Cultivated Nitrifying Bacterium Group (CNBG). The average ammonia removal rate of CDNB was 0.0234g $NH_4^+-N/g$ MLSS/hr. CNBG was produced in the batch reactor and Specific Nitrification Rate (SNR) was determined at 0.0107g $NH_4^+-N/g$ MLSS/hr. The SNR of CNBG was lower than the SNR of CDNB because the diverse and multi-cultured microbial growth took place during cultivation. The effect of the temperatures and the mixing ratios of sewage and culture solution on the SNR of CNBG was studied. The SNR of CNBG, 0.0107g $NH_4^+-N/g$ MLSS/hr at $27^{\circ}C$, decreased to 0.0048g $NH_4^+-N/g$ MLSS/hr at $15^{\circ}C$, and temperature coefficient (${\Theta}$) was calculated to be 1.07. With the varied sewage mixing ratios, the SNR of CNBG remained unchanged. Activated sludge reactors maintaining an MLSS of 2,000mg/L at HRT of 4 h were operated under conditions in which dosage of Concentrated CNBG Solution (CCNBGS, 10,000mg MLSS/L) and application method of CNBG were varied. The reactor with 20mL of CCNBGS took shorter time to oxidize $NH_4^+-N$ reaching 1mg/L than the reactor with 5mL of CCNBGS showing that higher dosages were associated with greater mass removal of $NH_4^+-N$. However, the total removal was not great. In terms of different methods of CNBG application, reactor seeded with 20mL of CCNBGS took 3days to reach 1mg/L of effluent ammonia concentration while reactor dosed with 20% (v/v) CNBG implanted media took 2days. Both the control reactor and the reactor dosed with 20% (v/v) media only did not reach 1mg $NH_4^+-N/L$ after operating 18days. The reactor with CNBG implanted media had the highest $NH_4^+-N$ removal rate because of maintaining high concentration of Nitrifying Oxidizing Bacteria (NOM), and is regarded as an appropriate method for the activated sludge process.
