The effects of HRT and effluent time on removals of pollutants in the electrochemical pilot were investigated. COD removal after 8 hour electrochemical reaction time in HRT 30 and 60 minutes were higher than that of 15 minute HRT. Turbidity removal was 90% or greater regardless of conditions during effluent time. Removals of T-N and T-P during effluent time in HRT 30 and 60 minutes were $71{\sim}74%$ and $85{\sim}98%$, respectively. To evaluate the combination of activated sludge process and continuous electrochemical as pretreatment, the removal efficiencies of pollutants was investigated. In two treatment processes of a single activated sludge system and a electrolysis pilot plus activated sludge systems, SVI and MLSS during effluent time were kept with $82{\sim}112$ and $1,230{\sim}1,750$ mg/L, respectively. COD removal was approximately 90% at early effluent time for both treatment systems, but COD removal in a single activated sludge was slightly decreased as effluent time went by, compared with the single activated sludge COD removal was slightly increased in the early stage of the electrolysis plus activated sludge system. Turbidity removal during effluent time was higher than 95% for both treatment systems. T-N removals during effluent time in a single activated sludge system and a electrolysis pilot plus activated sludge systems were $62{\sim}74%$ and $72{\sim}86%$, respectively. T-P removal in a electrolysis pilot plus activated sludge systems was increased by 9% at early effluent time and 15% after 72 hours of effluent time in compared with a single activated sludge system.

The relationship between bacteria and anaerobic archaea, sludge yield coefficient and nitrogen removal rate were investigated in intermittent aeration systems(I/A) with added archaea, I/A and conventional activated sludge system. As the archaea solution was added to the I/A reactor, organic removal rate as well as nitrogen removal rate increased. Also, sludge production rate in I/A system added the archaea was maintained lower than other systems because sludge yield coefficient was decreased due to the role of anaerobic archaea such as anaerobic degradation of organics. The experimental data supported the possibility of symbiotic activated sludge system with anaerobic archaea under intermittent aeration, leading to the enhanced nitrogen removal. Crucial results to be presented are: 1) specific oxygen utilization rate(SOUR) of the I/A-arch system was $2.9\;mg-O_2/(g-VSS{\cdot}min)$. SOUR and nitrification rate of the sludge from the I/A-arch system was higher than those from the I/A and A/S reactors. 2) Removal efficiencies of $TCOD_{Cr}$ in the I/A-arch, I/A and A/S reactors were 93, 90 and 87%, respectively. 3) Nitrification occurred successfully in each reactor, while denitrification rate was much higher in the I/A-arch reactor. Efficiencies of TN removal in the I/A-arch, I/A and A/S reactors were 75, 63 and 33%, respectively.

At present, the biological nutrient removal (BNR) process for removal of nitrogen and phosphorus is being constructing to keep pace with the reinforced standard of effluent quality and the traditional activated sludge process of preexistence is being promoting to retrofit. At the most case of retrofitting, processes are subjected to be under consideration as alternative BNR process for retrofitting. However, process evaluation methods are restricted to compare only treatment efficiency. Therefore, when BNR process apply, process evaluation was needed various method for treatment efficiency as well as sludge production and aeration cost, and all. In this study, the evaluation method of alternative process was suggested for the case for retrofitting S wastewater treatment plant which has been operated the standard activated sludge process. Three BNR processes for evaluation of proper alternatative process were selected and evaluated with suggested method. The selected $A^2$/O, VIP and DNR processes were evaluated using the mathematical model which is time and cost effective as well as gathered objective evaluation criteria. The evaluation between 5 individual criteria was possible including sludge production and energy efficiency as well as treatment performance. The objective final decision method for selection of optimal process was established through the fuzzy inference.
This reserch was focused upon experimental study for wastewater reuse and conducted to evaluate optimum operating conditions of rapid filtration process such as filter flow rate, filtration time and backwashing condition for reuse of secondary-treated effluent using the pilot plant installed in real wastewater treatment plant. Also, the experiment on treatment char-acteristics of coagulant-added activated sludge process was performed to compare with activated sludge succeeded to rapid filtration. As the filtration velocity was 100m/day, the filtration time of the rapid filter connected with activated sludge system was revealed to 40 hours. Backwashing of filter was conducted by water wash and air scour. The optimum backwashing time and backwash flow rate were 10min and 10LPM, respectively. The quantity of backwashing water of the rapid filter was about 2% of total treated water.

To treat piggery wastewaters containing refractory compounds including nitrogen, biological treatments were investigated. In biological treatment, the removal efficiencies of organics and nitrogen by the activated sludge process and bioreactor using a BACC (Biological Activated Carbon Cartridge) media filled with granular activated carbon were examined. The results were as follows; in the biological process, when the approximate influent BOD concentration of 620 mg/L, through dilution, was treated by the activated sludge process, the process should be operated at a HRT of over 8 days to maintain an effluent BOD concentration of lower than 100 mg/L. In the treatment of piggery wastewater using a BACC bioreactor, when the HRT was 200 hours, the BOD, COD(sub)cr, and TKN removal efficiency of the effluent were 94, 75 and 64.3%, respectively. Comparing the BACC bioreactor with the activated sludge process, when the volumetric loading rate was 0.3 g BOD/L.day, the specific substrate removal rate of BOD was 0.14 g BOD removed/L.day in the activated sludge process which compared with 0.27 g BOD removed/L$.$day in the BACC bioreactor. The BACC bioreactor showed on average a 2-fold higher removal rate and was superior to the activated sludge process in wastewater treatment in terms of variations of loading time and high loading time. Therefore, the BACC process can effectively treat piggery wastewater containing high concentrations of nitrogen and organic compounds.

The coupling of an activated sludge reactor with a membrane unit, i.e., Membrane Coupled Activated Sludge (MCAS) system offers several advantages over conventional process. But the major hurdle in the extensive use of this process is the continuous reduction of permeation flux caused by membrane fouling. The aim of this study is to investigate membrane fouling characteristics in the MCAS process. During crossflow ultrafiltration(CFUF) of activated sludge, floc size decreased abruptly at the beginning of operation and thereafter decreased continuously and gradually. The floc size changed from 100~200 to $6{\sim}8{\mu}m$ depending on recirculation velocity. This floc breakage played a key role in rapid increase of $R_c$(cake layer resistance), which led to flux decline. The floc breakage stimulated biomass to release EPS(Extracellular Polymeric Substance) which has been known to be one of the major membrane foul-ants. The amounts of EPS before and after CFUF were 266 and 405(VS mg/MLSS g), respectively. The rise up of EPS concentration was another factor affecting flux decline in MCAS system.
