  • Urban green spaces, as a means to mitigate social problems and environmental risks, are getting more attention in evaluating urban environment. The inequity of green space distribution is becoming a major issue in urban planning and management. This study investigated the characteristics of green space in 3 districts (Jung-gu, Dongdaemun-gu, Seongdong-gu), that are composed of 46 administrative divisions in central Seoul, to analyze the environmental equity of urban green spaces. The correlations between the amount of green space, including the coverage of street trees, and the socioeconomic status of each administrative division were analyzed. To deduce the effects of plant coverage on the urban temperature regime, the relationship between the normalized difference of vegetation index (NDVI) and land surface temperature (LST) was analyzed. The research revealed that the mean NDVI of an administrative division was negatively correlated with the percentage of basic living recipients and disabled people. The LST of a division with low NDVI was higher due to the lack of green coverage. Such environmental inequities were closely related to residential building type, which was strongly affected by the economic status of residents. The LST of an apartment area was $2.0^{\circ}C$ lower than that of single-family houses and multi-housing areas. This is expected as the average NDVI of the apartment area was more than twice as high as the other environments considered in this study. The inequity can be exacerbated without urban planning which is deliberately designed to reduce it.

  • Recently, as the generation and sharing of web data have increased, the importance of a social semantic web that combines the semantic web and the social web has also been increasing. In this paper, we propose a trust evaluation scheme based on provenance by extending the PROV model in the social semantic web environment. The proposed scheme manages the provenance of web data and adds the necessary elements for trust evaluation in the PROV model of W3C. The extended PROV model supports data management and provenance tracing. The proposed trust evaluation scheme considers various parameters such as user trust, original data trust, and user evaluation. The evaluated trust is managed as provenance. When processing a query, the proposed scheme generates a result by considering the trust. Therefore, the proposed scheme can manage the provenance of web data and compute data trust correctly by using such various parameters. The evaluated trust becomes a criterion to determine whether the query result can be trusted or not. In order to show the validity of the proposed scheme, we verify its performance using SPARQL queries.

  • World population has increased rapidly following the industrial revolution, reaching 7 billion in 2012. Several forecasts estimate that this number will rise to about 8 billion in 2025. Improvements of living standards in developing nations have also raised resource and energy demands worldwide. In consequences, human beings have faced many global and urgent problems, such as global warming, water and food shortages, resource and energy crises, and so on. Many ocean utilization technologies for avoiding or reducing such big problems have been developed, for examples $CO_2$ ocean sequestration, seawater desalination, artificial upwelling, deepwater mining, and ocean energies. It is important, however, to assess such technologies from the viewpoints of sustainability and public acceptancy, since the aims of those technologies are to develop sustainable social systems rather than conventional ones based on fossil resources. Inclusive Marine Pressure Assessment and Classification Technology Research Committee (generally called IMPACT Research Committee) of Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers, has proposed Inclusive Impact Index "Triple I" as an indicator, which can predict both environmental sustainability and economical feasibility, in order to assess the ocean utilization technologies from the viewpoints of sustainability and public acceptancy. This index was considered by combining Ecological Footprint and Environmental Risk Assessment. The Ecological Footprint and the Environmental Risk Assessment are introduced in the first part of this paper. Then the concept and the structure of the Triple I are explained in the second part of this paper. Finally, the economy-ecology conversion factor in Triple I accounting is considered.

  • Noise radiated from medical treatment at dental clinic will affect the patients. On such point of view, We investigated the noise characteristics in case of medical treatment (scaling, tooth eliminating) and non-medical examination (idling) and also evaluated the degree of indoor noise using the evaluation index such as PSIL, NRN and made up a questionnaire about the reactions to noise. As a result of noise evaluation, it shows that the range of noise level is 67.7~78.3 dB(A) and frequency is very high (above 4 k Hz) and respondents are affected by noise (unpleasantness, hesitation to visit dental clinic, shivering with noise, being astonishment). Analysis by PSIL showed that it was no problem to conversation between worker and patient. But it exceeded the noise permit level in working space by NR-curve. To relieve a fear of noise in patients, they are considered to offer the ear protection, choose the low noisevibration equipment and use the masking effect. They are of great advantage to dental clinics to i prove dental service and competitiveness.

  • In this research the current situations of libraries of 119 rural elementary schools are examined. These schools are the applicants for the 'Campaign for Libraries for Rural Schools' sponsored by Chosun Ilbo in 2009. Through the content analysis of their applications, the factors of facilities, collection, and environment are described. One the surface, most of these applicants look fine with the current size of collection and annual additions. They, however, commonly document the extremely poor conditions of facilities, unbalanced and low quality of books, lack of financial support, and cultural isolation. Even though they are not the typical rural school libraries, it seems urgent to improve their inferior conditions that any library statistics never shows in numbers. In this research, it is considered significant to make local governments and offices of education change their attitude toward rural school libraries and increase their financial support to them. The suggestions are as follows: First, let them know that school library policies concern the voters in communities; Second, use the visibility of various authoritative library assessments and awards; Third, strengthen the qualitative aspect of library evaluations.

  • The present study examined the various strength and deformation performances of molding materials recycled using film packaging wastes to ascertain the their applicability to secondary products in construction industries. The stress-strain relationships of molding materials were measured under compression, tension, and flexure in accordance with the ASTM procedure. The measured mechanical properties of recycled molding materials were comparable to typical ranges observed in low-density polyethylene and/or high-density polyethylene. However, to stabilize the properties of the molding materials, further management systems are required as follows: 1) evaluation of mechanical properties of materials with respect to various mixing proportions of waste ingredients; 2) estimation of the effect of foreign substance and moisture contents on the mechanical properties; and 3) establishment of comprehensive database including various sources such as manufacture process including applied pressure to produce the molding materials, and collection region and time of wastes.

  • This study was carried out to get the basic data on the efficient processing method of food wastes for utilizing as the resources of swine feeds composition, mineral and toxic elements of food waste were estimated in relation to the steps of processing and fermentation with MS (Miraculous soil-bacteria) microorganism complex. The chemical composition of food wastes was largely varied according to disposing sites, collection time and season. Offensive odor was reduced by anaerobic fermentation with MS microorganism complex. Food wastes fermented with MS microorganism complex have high contents in crude protein (24.1% D.M) and crude fat (12.9% D.M). Mineral composition was to be relatively well balanced compared to other plant or animal feed resources. Particularly the content of sodium was slightly higher than that of grains or agricultural byproducts. In food wastes fermented with MS microorganism complex, heavy metals such as Hg, As or F were not detected. Pb or Cd were detected in small quantities but their levels were below the dose s-permitted feeding standard of permitted dose in feeding standard. These results indicated that food wastes could be efficiently used for the resources of swine feeds through proper processing and fermentation.

  • The objectives of this research were to estimate nitrogen budgets in agriculture and livestock in 2010, and to evaluate nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emission by a local government. Input-output budgets for nitrogen were categorized into two sections including agriculture and livestock. Fertilizer, deposition, fixation, compost, irrigation, and feed were used as the nitrogen inputs while crop production, crop uptake, denitrification, volatilization, leaching, compost, and ocean disposal were used as the nitrogen outputs. Annual nitrogen input and output for agriculture and livestock were 1,148,848 N ton/yr and 610,380 N ton/yr respectively indicating the decrease of the nitrogen input and output, compared to our previous researches in 2005 and 2008. Total nitrogen input in 16 local government was estimated resulting that $N_2O$ emission was the highest for Jeonnam (2,574 ton/yr) and the lowest for Seoul (7 ton/yr).

  • Objective : This study was designed to identify the effects on the time usage and quality of life of seniors with stroke by applying lifestyle redesign programs on the theoretical basis of the Occupational Balance. Method : A pretest-posttest control group design was conducted for a total of 40 stroke elderly people living in nursing homes(20 experimental and 20 control groups). Prior assessment was conducted for two weeks before the application of the lifestyle redesign program. For the next 10 weeks, the lifestyle redesign program was applied seven times a week. After that, a week of post-evaluation was conducted. The time usage for the subjects was analyzed by Life Time Survey Table of the National Statistical Office(2009) and life quality for them was analyzed by World Health Organization Quality of Life-BRIEF (WHOQOL-BRIEF). Result : The comparison of time usage before and after application of the program demonstrated that for the experimental group, rest and sleep(t=-4.89, p<.001), and leisure(t=-4.67, p<.00b1) showed significant differences. In addition, intergroup comparison results showed that there were also significant differences in rest and sleep(t=-2.24, p<.01) and leisure(t=3.57, p<.01). The comparison of life quality showed a significant difference between two groups(t=6.80, p<.001). If you look at the sub-area of quality of life, a significant difference was identified in physical health(t=6.08, p<.001), psychological health(t=5.21, p<.001), living environment area(t=3.60, p<.01). Conclusion : Lifestyle redesign program actually reduced the time usage for rest and sleep for elderly with stroke living in nursing homes, and increased the time for participating in leisure life resulting in improved quality of life.

  • Approximate k-nearest neighbor queries are frequently occurred for finding the k nearest neighbors to a given query point in spatial database systems. The number of searched nodes in an index must be minimized in order to increase the performance of approximate k nearest neighbor queries. In this paper. we suggest the technique of approximate k nearest neighbor queries on R-tree family by improving the existing algorithm and evaluate the performance of the proposed method in dynamic spatial database environments. The simulation results show that a proposed method always has a low number of disk access irrespective of object distribution, size of nearest neighbor queries and approximation rates as compared with an existing method.
