  • This was the second study on the ecological characteristics of the epiphytes on seagrass leaf. The objective of this study was to understand the variation of epiphytes on seagrass leaf depending on the change of physico-chemical factors such as salinity, nutrients, and etc. This study showed the four results. 1) The eelgrass growth was influenced by water temperature, suggesting the positive correlation between eelgrass growth and water temperature. 2) The epiphytes growth on seagrass leaves did not show the correlation with water temperature, but negatively correlated with salinity. 3) The eelgrass growth decreased when the concentraion of nitrogen increased. 4) However, loads of epiphytes increased when the concentration of total nitogen (TN), nitrate ($NO_3^-$), and nitrite ($NO_2^-$) were high. This increase of epiphytes growth could be suggested in the cause-effect pathway of nutrient enrichment leading to seagrasses loss.

  • With a few exceptions, Korean lakes are artificially constructed for multi-purposes throughout the country. In the majority of cases, a lake is in a multiple series of reservoirs along a river or is an estuary Moreover, nutrient supplying activities (including sand extraction) and biomanipulation(esp., overfishing and fish introduction) are omnipresent in most cases. Furthermore, there is an Asian monsoon every year. In brief, europhication and algal blooms break out as a result of complicated causes. However limnological monitoring and scientific working programs are in the course of beginning. The question is what kind of strategy is desirable to establish a solid limnological database for the efficiency of the restoration process in each Korean reservoir We present light monitoring cases on the basis of algal and some physicochemical data in 2005. Do they give some useful informations despite their simplicity. Based on physicochemical factors and phytoplankton data using Utermohl method and Canonical Correspondence Analysis(CCA) were performed for Lake Cheongpyeong, Lake ASan, Lake Namyang, and Lake SapGyo. The results of CCA showed that Lake Cheongpyeong was different from the other three Lakes at estuary. Also each Lake at estuary was slightly different from one other. This result would encourage to initiate building an adequate Korean reservoir-ecosystem understanding and models for better ecological management despite the limited data. However, the results also indicate to sustain collecting ecological data and building database to interpret the Korean ecological reservoir model.

  • This study explored the relationship between connectedness to nature (CN) and belief on consequences (social, economic, and ecological) of establishing cable car and supportiveness to its establishment in a natural park. It also examined the relationship between socio-demographic and visiting characteristics and CN. Data were collected from 134 visitors in Mudeungsan Provincial Park (MPP) in September, 2010 through field questionnaire survey. CN was measured by using a connectedness to nature scale (CNS) revised from the Mayer and Frantz's (2004) original CNS. CN consisted of two factors: interdependence and independence. CN increased as respondents' age, education level, number of visits to MPP and number of visits to Jungbong area of MPP increase. Respondents with higher CN ratings showed stronger beliefs on negative consequences of the cable car establishment. CN, however, was not related with beliefs on positive consequences of establishing cable cars. Respondents with higher CN showed lower support about establishing cable cars.

  • Although physiological and ecological characteristics of cyanobacteria have been studied extensively for decades, unknown areas still remain greater than the already known. Recently, the development of omics techniques based on molecular biology has made it possible to view the ecosystem from a new and holistic perspective. The molecular mechanism of toxin production is being widely investigated, by comparative genomics and the transcriptomic studies. Biological interaction between bacteria and cyanobacteria is also explored: how their interactions and genetic biodiversity change depending on seasons and environmental factors, and how these interactions finally affect each component of ecosystem. Bioinformatics techniques have combined with ecoinformatics and omics data, enabling us to understand the underlying complex mechanisms of ecosystems. Particularly omics started to provide a whole picture of biological responses, occurring from all layers of hierarchical processes from DNA to metabolites. The expectation is growing further that algal blooms could be controlled more effectively in the near future. And an important insight for the successful bloom control would come from a novel blueprint drawn by omics studies.

  • In order to know relationships between green euglenoids and environmental factors, the species composition and density were assessed for 12 months together with environmental variables in the Jeonjucheon urban drainage, Korea. Nitrate was a high of 3.22 mg/1 in June and phosphate concentration was over 0.71 mg/l in the winter. The euglenoids totaled 5 genera and 71 species throughout the year, increasing in the early summer (35 to 42 texa) and decreasing in the winter (below 20 taxa). The number of green euglenoids positively correlated with surface water temperature. the total density of the green euglenoids showed a typical bimodal pattern, being maximal in the winter (5,394 cells/ml in June). The winter peak was a result of active growths of Euglena caudata, E. geniculata and E. viridis, however, each of which positively correlated with the phosphate. The early summer peak was attributed to Euglena deses, Lepocinclis ovum, and Phacus trypanon, each of which positively correlated with the ammonium and nitrate. The complete bimodal spectrum of species number and density of green euglenoids provides a sensitive image in detecting the changes of environmental variables in polluted waters such as Jeonjucheon.

  • The equilibrium theory of island biogeography describes that the number of species on an island is determined by two factors, island area and distance from mainland acting through extinction and immigration rates. I was analysed the relationships between species number and island area, latitude, and maximum elevation for butterflies on 71 islands in the Korean Peninsula. Among Korean islands, island area ($r^2$=0.405, P< 0.005) and habitat diversity ($r^2$=0.341, P<0.005) were significantly correlated, but distance from mainland ($r^2$=0.018, P>0.05) and latitude ($r^2$=0.040, P>0.05) were weakly correlated. The present and earlier studies on the butterfly species richness in Korean islands demonstrate that the butterfly fauna is closely related to the ecological variables, i.e., area, composition of flora and maximum elevation. • Using the Eddy Covariance technique, we analyzed seasonal variation in net ecosystem $CO_2$ exchange (NEE) and investigated the effects of environmental factors and aboveground biomass of rice on the $CO_2$ fluxes in a rice-barley double cropping paddy field of Gimje, Korea. Quality control and gap-filling were conducted before this investigation of the effects. The results have been showed that NEE, gross primary production (GPP), and ecosystem respiration (Re) during the rice growing period were -215.6, 763.9, and $548.3g\;C\;m^{-2}$, respectively. Relation between NEE and net radiation (Rn) could be described by a quadratic equation, and about 65 % of variation in NEE was explained by changes in Rn. On the other hand, an exponential function relating Re to soil temperature accounted for approximately 43 % of variation in Re under the flooded condition of paddy field. Aboveground biomass showed significant linear relationships with NEE ($r^2=0.93$), GPP ($r^2=0.96$), and Re ($r^2=0.95$), respectively.

CLUE(The Conversion of Land Use and its Effects) 모델을 이용하여 SRES(Special Report on Emissions Scenarios) 시나리오에 기초한 토지피복 변화를 살펴보고자 한다. 이는 향후 기후변화를 최소화하기위한 개발전략 수립에 있어서 정책방향을 결정하는 데 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

  • Canonical correlation analysis was applied on phytoplankton species and associated physico-chemical environmental factors of the surface mixed-later in the southwestern waters of the East Sea (Sea of Japan), Korea. Water temperature was the most significant environmental factor for the distribution of phytoplandton species among the seven factors examined in spring, and salinity in autumn. The importance of these two environmental factors was discussed with the seasonal variations of the hydrographical regime. Kuroshio indicators' and two protoperidinium species were positively associated with high water temperatures and high salinity. Small pennate diatoms and silicoflagellates seem to prefer lower temperatures, and they might compete each other for silicate nutrient resulting in lower K value in silicoflagellate species than in small diatoms. A nitrogen fixing blue-green alga, Oscillatoria erythraea, was found to be positively associated with phosphate concentration.

  • Environmental parameters and physiological characteristics of heterotrophic bacterial isolates were compared by factor analysis to investigate the influences of river barrage construction on the ecosystem of Naktong River Estuary. Aftcr the construction of river barrage, the influence of seawater was no longer significant. ant1 the influences of nutrients loading were increased from 50.7% to 77.1% of the environmental variances before and after the construction, respectively. The interpretations of features of bacterial physiological characteristics were closely related to environmental parameters as the results of factor analysis. But. differing from the environmental variances. it was found that the halophilic feature was the third factor of bacterial characteristics after the construction of river barrage. This suggests that the stability of Naktong estuarine ecosystem and heterotrophic bacterial characteristics are not established till now.
