  • In this paper, we present a risk prediction system and customized evacuation pathfinding algorithm in fire scenarios. For the risk prediction, we apply a multi-level clustering mechanism using collected temperature at sensor nodes throughout the network in order to predict the temperature at the time that users actually evacuate. Based on the predicted temperature and its reliability, we suggest an evacuation pathfinding algorithm that finds a suitable evacuation path from a user's current location to the safest exit. Simulation results based on FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator) of NIST for a wireless sensor network consisting of 47 stationary nodes for 1436.41 seconds show that our proposed prediction system achieves a higher accuracy by a factor of 1.48. Particularly for nodes in the most reliable group, it improves the accuracy by a factor of up to 4.21. Also, the customized evacuation pathfinding based on our prediction algorithm performs closely with that of the ground-truth temperature in terms of the ratio of safe nodes on the selected path, while outperforming the shortest-path evacuation with a factor of up to 12% in terms of a safety measure.

  • Smoke temperature and volume flow rate in a tunnel fire are calculated. To obtain realistic results, enthalpy of smoke which composites combustion gases and entrainment air is calculated from curvefit polynomials by temperature. A user-friendly computer program for them is also developed. This program might be used for a good engineering tool in design of fire safety and mock/reduced-scale fire tests in a tunnel.

  • Explosion limit and autoignition temperature are the major properties used to determine the fire and explosion hazards of the flammable substances. Explosion limit and autoignition temperature for safe handling of ethylene were investigated. By using the literatures data, the lower and upper explosion limits of ethylene recommended 2.6vol% and 36vol%, respectively. Also autoignition temperatures of ethylene with ignition sources recommended $420^{\circ}C$ at the electrically heated crucible furnace (the whole surface heating) and recommended about $800^{\circ}C$ in the local hot surface. The new equations for predicting the temperature dependence and the pressure dependence of the lower explosion limits for ethylene are proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with the literature data.

  • A general description of sprinkler activation time in compartment-fire-generated smoke layers is made. For calculation of the time hot layer temperature is obtained from two-layer zonal model and time constant of sprinkler is measured. Upper-layer thickness at the instant of sprinkler activation is also presented with changes of opening area. The output of the present study provide inputs for the interaction modeling of sprinkler spray and compartment fire environment, which simulates fire suppression phenomena. Futhermore, experiments are performed in mock-up with gasoline pool fire in order to evaluate the reliability of the model.

  • Among the fire incidents in Korea over the past decade, building fires are the most common, and property and human casualties are the most common. However, the existing fire fighting system does not only inform the location of emergency exits and guide safe routes to help casualties evacuate smoothly. A system was proposed to help successful evacuation by distinguishing vertical and horizontal characteristics using spatial characteristics. In this study, an effective evacuation system was proposed by predicting fires using temperature detection sensors and smoke sensor values, and calculating the optimal evacuation path through the Dijkstra algorithm.

  • The prediction performance of B-RISK was evaluated for the fire behaviors of combustibles in a compartment using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). First of all, to predict the heat release rate (HRR) for two combustible sets, the HRR for one combustible set and the design fire curve were used as input values for B-RISK. Comparing results of B-RISK calculations with experimental data for two combustible sets, it was found that B-RISK results predicted insufficiently for fire growth rate of experimental data but there was good agreement for maximum HRR and total HRR with the experimental data. And the B-RISK results were used for input values of FDS to evaluate the fire behaviors of B-RISK results. Comparing results of FDS calculations with experimental data, the simulation results showed that the temperature and concentrations of O2, CO2 in the fire growth phase were different from the experimental data. However, when using the B-RISK result for percentile 70%, the simulation results sufficiently predicted the overall fire behaviors.

  • The number of railway tunnels has been increasing rapidly. Although fires in long railway tunnels are rare, the consequences can be devastating. Prior to this study, there were no adequate time-temperature curves for the fire safety assessment of Korean railway tunnels. We studied a standard foreign time-temperature curve for which the heat rate is based on the traffic and the types of vehicles. We then proposed a hydrocarbon curve as a fire design model for railway tunnels in Korea. We examined the implications of this proposed model on railway tunnel structures using numerical analysis.

  • In this study, the previous design fire curve for fire simulation was modified and re-suggested. Numerical simulations with the FDS and CFAST were performed for the n-heptane and n-octane pool fires in the ISO 9705 compartment to evaluate the prediction performances of the previous 1-stage and modified 2-stage design fire curves. The numerical results were compared with the experimental temperature and concentrations of $O_2$ and $CO_2$. The FDS and CFAST simulations with the 2-stage design fire curve showed better prediction performance for the variation of temperature and major species concentration than the simulations with 1-stage design fire curve. Especially, the simulations with the 2-stage design fire curve agreed with the experimental temperature more reasonably than the results with the 1-stage design fire curve. The FDS and CFAST simulations showed good prediction performance for the temperature in the upper layer of compartment and the results with the FDS and CFAST were similar to each other. However, the FDS and CFAST showed poor and different prediction performance for the temperature in the lower layer of compartment.
