  • Oscillating heat release associated with periodic vortex-flame interaction was investigated experimentally. Turbulent jet flames were stabilized with recirculating hot products in a dump combustor, and large-scale periodic vortices were imposed into the jet flame by acoustic forcing. Forcing frequencies and operating parameters were adjusted to simulate unstable combustor operation in practical combustors. The objectives were to characterize vortex-heat release interaction that leads to unwanted heat release fluctuations and to identify the proper fuel injection pattern that could be used for actively suppressing such fluctuations. Phase-resolved CH* chemiluminescence and schlieren images were used as diagnostic tools. The results were compared at corresponding phases of vortex shedding cycle.

  • Flame flickering occurs mainly because of the buoyancy force for pool fires under ambient air. The cup-burner flame was used for experimental investigation of the effect of the oxidizer velocity on the gravitational instability. The results showed that the flickering frequency decreased with increasing oxidizer velocity. The frequency-buoyancy relation with nondimensional variables coincided with that of the buoyant flume and pool fires when the characteristic velocity was defined as the difference between the fuel and oxidizer velocities, which implies that the origin of the gravitational instability is the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the shear layer. The effect of the oxidizer composition on the instability was also examined through nitrogen dilution in the oxidizer stream. As the concentration of inert gas increased, the length of the blue flame increased and lift-off behavior was observed. The oscillation frequency was independent of the dilution ratio, but was related to the local flame structure.

  • Laminar burning velocities have been predicted by constant volume combustion chamber, counter flow burner and others. In this study, the measured flame propagation velocities in an assembled annular stepwise diverging tube were plotted with respect to equivalence ratio, length scale, and velocity scale. Three dimensional approach to understand the flame propagation velocity including laminar burning velocity is investigated, and the surface provides the correlation among quenching distance, propagation velocity, and equivalence ratio.

  • The effect of micro scale turbulence on flame structure and stability were experimentally investigated by changing the area of micro turbulence generator(MTG) and air velocity in terms of low NOx and high efficiency combustion. NOx and CO concentration were also measured for different MTG areas to investigate whether a vane swirler having MTG has a possibility of using as part for low NOx combustor. From the obtained results, it is shown that flame stability region increases and flame size becomes small as MTG area increases since MTG in itself makes small scale recirculation flow and swirler does large scale recirculation one. It is also shown that low NOx concentration(about 20${\sim}$30ppm@$O_2$ 11%) is achieved for all MTG areas without any increase in CO concentration regardless of air velocity range tested in this study when the equivalence ratio is 0.7. The results obtained in this study can give basic guideline for the design of compact low NOx high efficiency combustor using a vane swirler having MTG.

  • A swirler with turbulence generator is designed and manufactured for generating many small-scale eddies in the combustor which contribute to enhancing mixing effect between fuel and air. The method results in not only the disadvantage of pressure loss but also the advantage of promoting combustion and reducing NOx. For the purpose of the study, four kinds of swirler with different turbulence generator area (0%, 3%, 7%, and 12% of reducing flow area) are designed to confirm the effect of mixing according the variation in the area of the turbulence generator. The mixing of combustor in the radial direction is significantly improved and the distributions of flames and temperature are well distributed throughout the cross section of a combustor as area of swirl generator is increased.

  • The combustion test for real box of AC outdoor unit has been performed in this study in order to estimate the fire hazard in multi-system type of AC outdoor unit which is currently used for commercial use. The result showed that in test, there was explosion inside of AC outdoor unit, and flame erupted and fire spread through upper side grill. And then this fire burnt the combustibles such as wires, electronic control board, heat exchange copper plate and plastics etc inside the unit, refrigerant gas pipe was burst due to fire, and accelerated the explosion and flame eruption to outside while the refrigerant was erupting. It is found in this test that the maximum heat release rate of AC outdoor unit is 5,830 kW, the maximum internal temperature measured with infrared camera and thermocouple is $1,201^{\circ}C$, maximum ambient temperature is $881^{\circ}C$, and flame rose higher than about 5 m. It is concluded that the fire in AC outdoor unit cause fire to combustibles around the unit, and may give big damage by generating the secondary fire. It is expected that the result obtained from the test on the real object may be applied to fire realization of AC outdoor unit and estimation of fire spreading to the combustibles around in the future computer simulation.

  • Flow velocity was measured by, use of hot wire anemometer. Turbulence intensity was in proportion to mean flow velocity regardless of swirl velocity. And integral length scale has proportional relation with swirl velocity regardless of measurement position. Turbulent burning speed during flame propagation which was determined by flame photograph and gas pressure of combustion chamber was increased with the lapse of time from spark and was decreased a little at later combustion period. Because of combustion promotion effect, turbulent burning speed was increased according to increase of turbulence intensity. Burning speed ratio i.e. ratio of turbulent burning speed ($S_BT$) to laminar burning speed ($S_BL$) was found out by use of turbulence intensity u' and integral length scale $l_x$ , $\delta_L$ is width of preheat zone in laminar flame.

  • In this research, exterior material combustion experiment was really tested to evaluate fire risks of aluminium complex panel which is used a lot for building exterior material. As a result, We saw fast fire spreading of aluminium complex panel. The reason is polyethylene in aluminum complex panel combust spreading fast fire flame vertically. In this test, the highest heat release rate of aluminum complex panel was 1,144 kW and surface temperature which is measured by thermocouple went up to more than $903.3^{\circ}C$, that temperature is quite a higher than $660^{\circ}C$ which is aluminum melting temperature. So, fire of aluminum complex panel can be evaluated to give us severe damage both by fast fire spreading vertically and by fire spreading through openings internally. These results from real experiment will be able to use to predict fire spreading of aluminum complex panel by comparing to modeling materialization of aluminum complex panel in the future.
