  • This study is to investigate experimentally the flame structure and propagation mechanism in dust explosions and to provide the fundamental knowledge. Upward propagating laminar dust flames in a vertical duct of 1.8 m height and 0.15 m square cross-section are observed and flame front is visualized using by a high-speed video camera. Also, the thicknesses of preheated and reaction zone have been determined by a schlieren, electrostatic probe and thermocouple. The thickness of preheated zone in lycopodium dust flame is observed to be 4~13 mm, about several orders of magnitude higher than that of premixed gaseous flames. From the experimental results by a PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) system, a certain residence time of the unburned particle in preheated zone is needed to generate combustible gas from the particle. The residence time will depend on preheated zone thickness, particle velocity and flame propagation velocity.

  • This experimental study deals with on Nitric Oxide Formation & Reduction in Industrial Bunner. In this study, Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) techniques have been used for quantitative measurements of Nitric Oxide. The NO A-X (0, 0) Vibrational band around 226 nm was excited using a XeCl excimer-pumped dye laser. And on-line excitation used $P_{21}+Q_1(14.5)/R_{12}+Q_2(20.5)/P_1(23.5)$ transition, for minimizing the other interferential effect. The measurements were taken NO concentration distribution in double swirling diffusion flame. In this swirl burner, NO concentration in downstream fo the flame decrease as primary/secondary air ratio increases.

  • Syngas laminar burning velocity measurements were carried out at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature using the Bunsen flame configuration with nozzle burner as a fundamental study on flame stability of syngas fuel. Representative syngas mixture compositions ($H_2$:CO) such as 25:75%, 50:50% and 75:25% and equivalence ratios from 0.5 to 1.4 have been conducted. Average laminar burning velocities have been determined by the stabilized nozzle burner flames using the angle method, radical surface area method and compared with the data obtained from the other literatures. And the results of each experimental methodologies in the various composition ratios and equivalence ratios were coincided with the result of numerical simulation. Especially, it was confirmed that there was necessary to choice a more accurate measurement methodology even the same static flame method for the various composition ratios of syngas fuel including hydrogen. Also, it was reconfirmed that the laminar burning velocities gradually increased with the increasing of hydrogen content in a fuel mixture.

  • Conditional sampling measurement is required for conditional averages as well as unconditional Favre averages to resolve different flame structures of turbulent combustion. A Favre average can be obtained as an integral of conditional average and Favre PDF in terms of the mixture fraction, which is a preferred choice as a sampling variable in diffusion controlled turbulent combustion. MILD combustion data are presented as an example for a conditionally averaged data set and comparison with CMC calculation results.

  • A laser system and signal aquisition system to use a laser-induced fluorescence technique were arranged to measure NO concentration. To identify the NO fluorescence signal, verification of the fluorescence was performed through use of comparison of the signals taken both in a undoped and doped calibration flames. Finally, the spatial NO number densities in partially premixed flames were found as a function of fuel-tube equivalence ratio(${\phi}_c$) and overall equivalence ratio(${\phi}_o$).

  • To evaluate characteristics in spray flame, laminar counterflow is investigated on the effects of equivalence ratio and fuel by a two-dimensional DNS (direct numerical simulation). For the gaseous phase, Eulerian mass, momentum, energy, and species conservation equations are solved. For the disperse phase, all individual droplets are calculated by the Lagrangian method without the parcel model. n-Decane ($C_{10}H_{22}$) and n-heptane ($C_7H_{16}$) is used as a liquid spray fuel, and a one-step global reaction is employed for the combustion reaction model. As equivalence ratio increases, the fuel ignites early and the high temperature region spreads wider. The peak value of temperature, however, tends to once increase and then decreases with increasing equivalence ratio. The decrease in the peak value of temperature for the higher equivalence ratio condition is caused by the cooling effect associated with droplet group combustion. Since the evaporation of n-heptane is early, the high temperature region spreads wider than ndecane, but the peak values of temperature for both n-heptane and n-decane is almost same.
