  • Many plutonic rock fragments of granitic composition were collected from the Deception Island. We obtained K-Ar ages of $62.5{\pm}1.2\;Ma$ and $140.7{\pm}2.7\;Ma$ from the two samples. Such result contradicts the general belief that most of the volcanic rocks of Deception Island are products of very recent activities and their maximum age does not exceed 200 ka. On the other hand, Mesozoic to Cenozoic rocks produced by subduction-related active magmatism have been reported from both South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula, located to the north and south of the Deception Island respectively. Also, various kinds of plutonic rocks with granitic composition are distributed widely. Therefore, plutonic rock fragments with granitic composition discovered from the Deception Island seem to indicate their derivation by capturing granitic crustal material underlying volcanic edifice during the volcanic activities, instead of differentiation from magmas related with recent volcanism. Ages and rock types of the plutonic rock fragments suggest arc-related origin just as adjacent South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninasula.

  • Mount Fuji is the focus of intense study because of its potential hazard signaled by seismic, geologic and historical activity. Based on extensive seismic data recorded in the vicinity of Mt. Fuji, coda quality factor ($Q_c^{-1}$) using a single scattering model hypothesis, and intrinsic and scattering quality factor $(Q_i^{-1}$ and $Q_s^{-1})$ using the Multiple Lapse Time Window Analysis (MLTW) method was measured. To focus the study on the magmatic structure below Mt. Fuji, to the data were separated into two groups: a near-Fuji region of rays traversing an area with radius 5 km around the summit (R < 5 km), and a far-Fuji region of rays beyond a radius of 20 km around the summit (R > 20 km). The results of the study have a small error range due to the large data sample, showing that all $Q^{-1}$ values in near-Fuji area are greater than those of far-Fuji area, and $Q_i^{-1}$ for both the near and far-Fuji area is higher than $Q_s^{-1}$ at high frequencies. The $Q_i^{-1}$ values of the near-Fuji area are lower than those of the other volcanic areas considered, while values of $Q_s^{-1}$ are not. The low $Q_i^{-1}$ for the volcanic region of near-Fuji suggests that the magmatic activity, or percent of partial melt, at Mt. Fuji is not as active as hot spot volcanoes such as Kilauea, Hawaii.

  • This study performed the analysis on the volcanic gases and hot spring waters from the Julong hot spring at Mt. Baekdu during the period from July 2015 to August 2016. Also, we confirmed the errors that $HCO_3{^-}$ concentrations of hot spring waters in the previous study (Lee et al. 2014) and tried to improve the problem. Dissolved $CO_2$ in hot spring waters was analyzed using gas chromatograph in Lee et al. (2014). Improving this, from 2015, we used TOC-IC to analysis dissolved $CO_2$. Also, we analyzed the $Na_2CO_3$ standard solutions of different concentrations using GC, and confirmed the correlation between the analytical concentrations and the real concentrations. However, because the analytical results of Julong hot spring water were in discord with the estimated values based on this correlation, we can't estimate the $HCO_3{^-}$ concentrations of 2014 samples. During the period of study, $CO_2/CH_4$ in volcanic gases are gradually decreased, and this can be interpreted in two different ways. The first interpretation is that the conditions inside the volcanic edifice are changing into more reduction conditions, and carbon in volcanic gases become more favorable to distribute into $CH_4$ or CO than $CO_2$. The second interpretation is that the interaction between volcanic gases and water becomes greater than past, and the concentrations of $CO_2$ which have much higher solubility in water decreased, relatively. In general, the effect of scrubbing of volcanic gas is strengthened during the quiet periods of volcanic activity rather than active periods. Meanwhile, the analysis of hot spring waters was done on the anion of acidic gases species, the major cation, and some trace elements (As, Cd, Re).

  • We report new K-Ar ages of volcanic rocks from Ulleung-do and Dok-do islands located at the middle of the Korea Sea; $3.67{\pm}0.40\sim1.89{\pm}0.29$ Ma for the Dok-do and $8.07{\pm}0.39\sim0.51{\pm}0.07$ Ma for the Ulleung-do. Such ages reveal that igneous activities of both Dok-do and Ulleung-do extend longer than previously reported. It is likely that igneous activity of Ulleung-do started as early as $8.07{\pm}0.39$ Ma which is much older than age known currently, and latest eruption and intrusion of trachyte of Dok-do lasted until $1.89{\pm}0.29$ Ma, which overlaps previously reported igneous activity of Ulleung-do. However, it seems that the main volcano-building stage of Ulleung-do started after 2.7 Ma and igneous activities of Dok-do were finished mostly before then, which suggests that Dok-do was farmed before Ulleung-do in the respect of main stages of volcano-building. Such explanation agrees well with the hypothesis that southeastern seamounts, Dok-do and Ulleung-do were sequentially generated by relatively fixed hotspot.
