Efficiency Analysis for Korean Trucking Companies based on the Data Envelopment Ananlysis(DEA) (DEA 모형을 이용한 국내 화물자동차운송업체의 상대적 효율성 분석)

  • Logistic system and methods of the transportation have been changed rapidly by the variety of the logistics environment. It is necessary to analyze the efficiency of Korean trucking companies for enhancing the competitive power and operating. This paper will describe the analysis of the efficiency of the trucking companies with DEA models. By the CCR and the BCC models, which are in parts of DEA model, the efficiency and RTS(Return To Scale) of forty two selected trucking companies were studied. It was also analyzed how the study the input-output variables were effected. And then, some of the forty two trucking companies were shown as the benchmark. As the result of analysis on the two models, seven companies won the score '1' on CCR model and seventeen companies on BCC model. Moreover, this study showed that reducing the total asset out of input variables, and raising the sales profit out of the output variables played a main role to increase the efficiency of the trucking companies highly.

A DEA and Malmquist Index Approach to Measuring Productivity and Efficiency of Korean Trucking Companies (DEA와 Malmquist 지수를 활용한 화물자동차운송업체의 효율성 및 생산성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficiency and productivity of domestic trucking transportation companies using DEA-CCR, BCC, and Malmquist indexes. Here, we analyze the top 14 domestic trucking transportation companies, based on cargo volume. The number of freight agents, trucks, and assets are used as input variables, and cargo volumes and sales are used as output variables. The efficiency of trucking transportation companies is examined using a DEA approach, and Malmquist indexes are applied to analyze productivity. According to the DEA results, the efficiency levels of the CCR, BCC, and scales for three companies (DMU 4, 5, and 10) are 1, indicating that these companies are operated efficiently. At the same time, the Malmquist indexes show that all companies have values smaller than 1, except for the period 2012-2013, indicating that their productivity decreased. Furthermore, the TECI indexes were all larger than 1, except for the period 2012-2013, indicating that the companies are efficient. Lastly, all TCI indexes are smaller than 1, except for the period 2012-2013, indicating regressing trends.

  • 차량화물은 국내 품목별 수출물량의 2위를 차지하는 수출화물로(현재 2007년 상반기), 한미 FTA 이후 수출물량이 점차 더 증가할 것으로 예상되어 그 중요성이 높아지고 있다. 이러한 수출 차량화물을 해상운송하는 Car Carrier업체(차량화물 운송전문 업체)의 효율적인 수출업무 처리를 위해, 실시간으로 변하는 정보를 효과적으로 표현 및 변경이 가능하고, 운송계획에 필요한 관련 정보를 제공받을 수 있는 시스템이 필요하다. 그러나 현재 대부분의 Car Carrier업체는 작업자의 경험에 의존한 수작업으로 운송계획을 수립하는 문제점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 Car Carrier업체의 해상운송계획 수립 시 의사결정을 효율적으로 지원할 수 있도록 사용자 인터페이스를 강화한 RIA(Rich Internet Application)기반의 자동차 해상운송계획시스템을 설계 및 개발하고자 한다.

Relative Efficiency of Korea Trucking Transport Business Using DEA Model (DEA를 이용한 국내 화물자동차 운송업의 상대적 효율성분석)

  • Korea Trucking Transport Business is one of principal national logistics sector, though, so many issues and problems came to arises, which brought cargo transport system crisis over the country such as logistics enormous jam and traffic. This paper analyzes the efficiency of korean trucking transport business firms using DEA model. We evaluate the CCR, BCC efficiency and RTS of 30 trucking transport firms. We also suggest the trucking transport firms which can be benchmarked based on analyzed information. The result shows that seven enterprises whose values of CCR efficiency are 1, and fifteen enterprises whose values of BCC efficiency are 1. RTS indicates IRS of 16 firms, DRS of 5 firms and CRS of 9 firms.

A Study on the Operational Way of Freight Forwarding Company: Focusing on Residental Moving Company (화물운송주선업체의 운영방안에 관한 연구 - 이사화물운송주선업체를 중심으로 -)

  • This study aims to provide solutions concerned with to residential moving companies about their operational problems. In order to shed light on these problem, factor analysis and fuzzy AHP method are adopted. Selected factors are low quality of workers and equipments, weak condition of business, policy and form of a contract, and excessive competition. The results of survey show that excessive competition is the most urgent problem compared with other problems. In the twelve-measured variables, The problem of non-certificated firms, low service quality caused by excessive competition, and claims caused by lack of service instruction are chosen as the urgent matters. As a result of the analyses, the study would propose policy directions how to solve these problems. Firstly, the government should make the legal basis of operating the industry because there is too competitive in the field. Secondly, the government should regulate firms which have not a certificate because they are the cause of low service quality in the field. Thirdly, in order to improve the service quality, the study would suggest that the managers should instruct the workers of residential moving companies. Lastly, the paper would suggest that customers check the certificate of the firm allowed by the government authorities.

A Comparative Study about Industrial Structure Feature between TL Carriers and LTL Carriers (구역화물운송업과 노선화물운송업의 산업구조 특성 비교)

  • Transportation enterprises should maintain constant and qualitative operation. Thus, in short period, transportation enterprises don't change supply in accordance with demand. In the result, transportation enterprises don't reduce operation in spite of management deficit at will. In freight transportation type, less-than-truckload(LTL) has more relation with above transportation feature than truckload(TL) does. Because freight transportation supply of TL is more flexible than that of LTL in correspondence of freight transportation demand. Relating to above mention, it appears that shortage of road and freight terminal of LTL is larger than that of TL. Especially in road and freight terminal comparison, shortage of freight terminal is larger than that of road. Shortage of road is the largest in 1990, and improved after-ward. But shortage of freight terminal is serious lately. So freight terminal needs more expansion than road, and shows better investment condition than road. Freight terminal expansion brings road expansion in LTL, on the contrary, freight terminal expansion substitutes freight terminal for road in TL. In transportation revenue, freight terminal's contribution to LTL is larger than that to TL. However, when we adjust quasi-fixed factor - road and freight terminal - to optimal level in the long run, in TL, diseconomies of scale becomes large, but in LTL, economies of scale becomes large. Consequently, it is necessary for TL to make counterplans to activate management of small size enterprises and owner drivers. And LTL should make use of economies of scale by solving the problem, such as nonprofit route, excess of rental freight handling of office, insufficiency of freight terminal, shortage of driver, and unpreparedness of freight insurance.

The Value of Time in Intercity Freight Transportation (지역간 화물운송의 시간가치 추정)

  • The value of time in freight transportation describes the importance of goods during transport and shows the direction of efficient logistic management having inventory cost in transporting The value of time differs from class to class in freight transportation. It is due to the differences of shipper's willingness to Pay for time saving. In this research the value of time in intercity freight transportation of manufacturers in Korea was estimated as follows: first, the Perception factors which were the important criteria of shippers for choosing truck were sampled. second, the shippers were classified into three homogeneous classes. third, the value of time of each class was estimated by using multinominal logit model. The results of this research showed that the value of time in freight transportation was different from every class, that the shipper had to Pay 1,680 won for saving one hour Per each shipment, and that the inventory cost in transporting occupied 9.54% in the mean freight Price.

  • The purpose of the study is to analyze the travel characteristics of freight trucks in metropolitan areas, focusing on activity generation, destination choice, and trip chaining behaviors. The results showed that the number of service companies at departure areas has a primary influence on the activity generation pattern and destination choice behavior of trucks in metropolitan areas. The number of trips within a trip chain is largest, in case where the prevailing industry in destination areas is wholesale or retail and the shipment item is food or beverage. These results imply that for the reasonable estimation of truck travel demand both the trip chaining behaviors and the industrial compositions in departure and destination areas should be separately considered for each type of commodity.

  • Management of driver hours of service (HOS) for commercial vehicle operators has been a continual safety challenge. One of the more critical issues to government and motor carriers is fatigue and fatigue-related accidents. To reduce truck drivers’fatigue-related accident risk in other countries, the government issued the HOS regulations. However, korea government does not have any HOS regulations. The objective of this research gives the clues that korea should have the HOS regulation to reduce truck drivers’fatigue-related accident risk. This study examines the HOS regulation over other countries and conducts relative accident risk analysis using the real data from 3 freight companies. The data set includes 231 accident involved drivers and 462 non-accident drivers. Therefore, the size of the total data set is 693 drivers. One of the most important aspects of early studies of safety and HOS was the need to characterize continuous driving by using the notion of "survival". Subsequent research used a data replication scheme and logistic regression to capture the survival effect. This study uses time-dependent logistic regression. The test of significance between parameters indicates that the first three hours are almost the same risk. In the 10th hour of driving, the risk was more than 2.2times that in the baseline first hour. In conclusion, as driving time goes on, the crash risk increases.

  • Typical activity-based travel analysis has been focused on passenger travel using household survey data. The current research focuses on freight transport using one-day travel survey data. Passenger travel can be seen as the outcome of traveller's subjective decision-making, whereas freight transport is the outcome of shipper or transport company's optimized scheduling. The research conducts an activity-based analysis of freight-vehicle trip chains. In particular, the research focuses on the difference in travel pattern between shipper-oriented private vehicle and transport company-oriented business vehicle. The research analyzed the travel diary of freight vehicles collected as part of the third national logistic survey in 2005. The diary is freight driver's one-day travel record including the information of loading capacity, item transported, destination, arrival time, etc. The analysis results show the difference between private and business vehicles in the travel pattern regarding the sequences of destination, destination type and item transported and the multi-dimensional information of the three sequences.
