  • This study is to analyze the Probable Maximum Flood(PMF) as a part of counterplan for the disaster prevention of hydraulic structures such as dams, according to recent unfavorable weather conditions. During the period of typhoon RUSA in August 2002, the rainfall recorded in Gang-loeng Province was 880mm a day and exceeded the scale of PMP made in 2001. Accordingly, the reconsideration of hydrologic criteria for dam design was inevitable. In the design of dams for flood controls, the design flood must be determined by introducing the concept of maximum values. When the duration of design rainfall is determined, it needs to use the critical duration which causes the maximum flood by the maximum runoff. In this study, we Investigate the variation of critical duration with hydrologic parameters used in three different synthetic unit hydrographs(Clark, Nakayasu and SCS methods). As a result, the total runoff calculated from 24-hour duration is larger than that calculated from the critical duration. We calculate also the hydrographs with three different time distribution models(Huff's 4-quartile, IDF curve and Mononobe) and compare those with measured hydrograph data. From this comparison, we propose that the Huff's 4-quartile model must be used to obtain the desirable data in the hydrologic design of dams.

  • In this study, the artificial neural network model is applied for real-time dam inflow prediction and then evaluated for the prediction lead times (1, 3, 6 hr) in dam basins in Korea. For the training and testing the model, hourly precipitation and inflow are used as input data according to average annual inflow. The results show that the model performance for up to 6 hour is acceptable because the NSE is 0.57 to 0.79 or higher. Totally, the predictive performance of the model in dry seasons is weaker than the performance in wet seasons, and this difference in performance increases in the larger basin. For the 6 hour prediction lead time, the model performance changes as the sequence length increases. These changes are significant for the dry season with increasing sequence length compared to the wet season. Also, with increasing the sequence length, the prediction performance of the model improved during the dry season. Comparison of observed and predicted hydrographs for flood events showed that although the shape of the prediction hydrograph is similar to the observed hydrograph, the peak flow tends to be underestimated and the peak time is delayed depending on the prediction lead time.

  • The DAMBRK is applied to Janghyeon and Dongmak reservoirs in Namdaecheon basin, where two reservoirs were failed due to Typhoon Rusa in 2002. Relaxation scheme is added to DAMBRK to consider the tributary cross-section because two reservoirs are in tributary valleys. In addition, this study suggests the method to utilize the reservoir breach formation time of ASDSO (2005) and empirical formulas for peak break outflow from dam to reduce the uncertainty of reservoir breach formulation time. The single break of Janghyeon reservoir and consecutive break of Janghyeon and Dongmak reservoirs with the suggested method are considered. While the breach discharge from reservoirs rushes down, the discharge and water surface elevation along the river are predicted, and the predictions show the attenuation phenomena of reservoir break floodwave. The applicability of the model is validated by comparing the predicted height with field surveyed data, and showing good agreements between predictions and measurements.

  • In this study, that the Kraven(II) empirical formula, the existing method to estimate the time of concentration in river basin, does not reflect the characteristics of relevant basin as it presents 3 stream velocities by section of slope was verified, and the time of concentration for the actual average stream velocity considering the characteristics of the basin was compared and analyzed by applying the continuous Kraven empirical formula, which was suggested recently by 'Design Flood Estimation Guide Line, 2012, Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs' complementing the stream velocities for the easy slope and the steep slope, to the Donghwa-Cheon, the medium size river and the modality of changes in hydrograph was examined, For the Maeho-Cheon, Wuksu-Cheon and Geumpo-Cheon, the flood runoff simulation results according to the time of concentration application empirical formula considering the characteristics of relevant basin were compared and analyzed and following conclusions were able to obtain.

  • The storage function model (SFM) has been used for the flood forecasting in Korea. The SFM has a simple calculation process and it is known that the model is more reasonable than linear model because it considers non-linearity of flood runoff. However, the determination of parameters is very difficult. In general, the trial and error method which is an manual calibration by the decision of a model manager. This study calibrated the parameters by the trial and error method and optimization technique. The calibrated parameters were compared with the representative parameters which are used in the Flood Control Centers in Korea. Also, the evaluation indexes on objective functions and calibration methods for the comparative analysis of simulation efficiency. As a result, the Genetic Algorithm showed the smallest variation in objective functions and, in this study, it is known that the objective function of SSR (Sum of Squared of Residual) is the best one for the flood forecasting.

  • This study is a research based on an existing analysis that peak values of unit hydrograph are variant according to rainfall intensity in a watershed. Differently from the fundamental assumption that an unit hydrograph is time-invariant in a watershed a variant unit hydrograph to rainfall intensity by storms is defined and applied into rainfall events, which produces out runoff hydrograph for an examination. Peak flow and time to peak of unit hydrograph used for an application are obtained from the relation equation with rainfall intensity developed by a previous study reviewed, and its shape is made by Nash unit hydrograph which is determined by the peak values. For the purpose of a comparison an invariant unit hydrograph is defined as Nash model obtained from averaged peak values of unit hydrograph which is derived by 26 rainfall storms. Peak flow and time to peak of flood hydrograph developed respectively by variant unit hydrograph with rainfall intensity and an averaged unit hydrograph are compared to those of the observed hydrograph. With comparing both hydrographs calculated by averaged unit hydrograph and revised unit hydrograph to observed hydrograph it is shown the peak flow and time to peak of hydrograph calculated by time-invariant unit hydrograph revised in this study are closer to those of observed hydrograph than those calculated by averaged unit hydrograph.

  • Integrated storage function model (ISFM) is applied to some rainfall-runoff events of the selected basins in Korea to show validity of the proposed model. Comparing the numerical results of the model with the field measurements, the simulated hydrographs and peak flood discharges for the most part showed good agreements, except the occurrence time of the peak discharges which showed a bit discrepancy, and they showed it was very hard to have a sufficient lead-time to forecast the flood when the upstream inflow of the channel reach was more dominant than the inflow from the residual watershed of the channel.hannel.

  • The objective of this study is to help practicing engineers easily use the Clark model which is used for estimating the magnitude of design flood for small stream. A representative unit hydrograph was derived on the basis of the past rainfall-runoff data and unit hydrographs, and the storage coefficient of Clark model was estimated by using hydrograph recession analysis. Since the storage coefficient(K) is a dominating factor among the parameters of Clark method, a mulitple regression formula, which has the drainage area, main channel length and slope as parameters, is propsed to estimate K value of a basin where measured data are missing. The result of regression analysis showed that there is a correlation between a storage coefficient(K) and aforemetioned three parameters in homogenious basins. A regression formular for K was derived using these correlations in a basin of Han River, Nakdong River, Young River, Kum River and Sumjin River

  • The agricultural water, which occupy about 61% of total water usage in the South Korea, is significantly objective to archieve effecitive water resources management. The objective of the study is to suggest a simple method in actual practice that could be used to estimate agricultural water usage in river considering hydrological condition. Historical record of agricultural water usage and runoff, which take account for hydrological condition of the basin, were obtained for totally 27 river basins. As the result, the high threshold value of the agricultural water usage rates compared to maximum usage amount has a particular correlations to the percent of normal year runoff for last 2 month, and threshold line of agricultural water usage rates was derived using the quantile regressions. Finally, two dimensionless threshold line and empirical formulas that described the correlation between the percent of normal year runoff for last 2 month and the agricultural water usage rate compared to maximum usage amount were derived. Also, the simple criteria to select which line and formula based on the characteristics of the basins was suggested but it need further studies. The result of the study could be used as an elemantary data in actual practice for water resoureces management.

  • This study involves field monitoring of hydrlolgic characteristics of paddy fields under common irrigation practice, statistical analysis of maximum retention storage, determination of CNs for antecedent moisture conditions. Curve numbers were estimated from observed rainfall-runoff relationship of two years data. The estimated CN for AMC-II was 78, and the CNs for AMC-I and II were 63 and 88, respectively. A water balance model was used to find the effect of ridge height changes and initial ponding depth in paddy fields on runoff. The probability distribution of initial ponding depth was also investigated. The initial ponding depth follows normal probability distribution. Initial ponding depth corresponding 10%, 50%, and 90% probability were considered to be equivalent to AMC-I, AMC-II, and AMC-III, respectively. Long-term runoff data from paddy fields were simulated by a water balance model using recorded climate data, ridge height and estimated initial ponding depth derived from probability distribution. The estimated CNs using simulated runoff were 70, 79, and 89 for CN-I, CN-II, and CN-III, respectively.
