  • The aim of this study was to explore and understand the communication experiences of the deaf, from their perspective. This study obtained informations through in-depth interviews with five people with deafness using sign language. The collected data was analyzed according to Giorgi's phenomenological qualitative methods. The following main themes were extracted from the practical experiences of the participants interviewed: 'being confined in the world without sound by themselves', 'learning and comprehending how to communicate', and 'looking for identity as a membership of the deaf community'. Sign language was a tool and mediator so that they could come out of their comfort zone, communicate with people, and connect to others in the deaf community. However, on the other hand, sign language had a contradictory role that restricted their activities to the deaf societies that could understand each other using sign language. As a result of this study, we can be cognizant of how much not hearing and speaking(hearing disability) is a difficulty for human beings. The implication of this study's results on policy making and actual practices are discussed focusing on the rights and well-being of the deaf.

  • The goal of this paper is to propose the Hangul Jamo to make a optimum transmission code of Hangul consonant and vowel(Jamo). The Hangul Jamo was analyzed by three kinds of Hangul Jamo. First one is the basic Hangul Jamo which is consisted by 24ea Jamo. Second one is a two combination keyboard which has 28ea Jamo. Third one is 54 Jamo set which is added the double Jamo to the second one. Use frequency of Hangul-Jamo is analyzed based on the Hangul in "Modern Korean Use Frequency Rate Survey Result" issued by The National Institute of the Korean Language". Total 58,437 Korean words are contained in the report and the words are composed with Hangul 1,540ea. The results of this study are as follows, In the Jamo are that in the first Jamo set case, the highest use frequency consonant is "ㅇ" and the lowest one is "ㅋ", and in the vowel case, the highest use frequency one is "ㅏ" and the lowest one is "ㅑ". In the second case, the highest use frequency consonant is same as first case and the highest vowel is "ㅏ" and the lowest one is "ㅒ". In the third case, the highest consonant is "ㅏ" and the lowest one is "ㅞ". the highest vowel is "ㄱ" and the lowest one is "ㄽ".

  • The aim of this paper is to analyze the vowel lengthening in Korean, whose function is distinctive in the word's level. In this paper, I examined two acoustic parameters : vowel length and formants(F1 and F2) to distinguish or to identify the long vowel and his short correspondant, for exemple, /a:/ and /a/. According to the results of experimental analysis and to the discussion on the vowel length's relation and its influence to Korean phonological system, I considered a vowel lengthening as a prosodeme, so as a prosodic element in Korean phonological system.

  • Hunminjeongeum was made by the Great King Sejong, and composed of 17 consonant and 11 vowel letters. All the 28 letters were made according to the shape of vocal organ or space at the point of articulation for each letters. This review article focused on phonetic and phoniatric consideration for explanation of the designs of the middle vowel letters, especially three main vowel letters [ • (天, heaven), ㅡ (地, earth), ㅣ (人, human)] using video-fluoroscopic evaluation as well as computed tomography scanning, etc. During articulating / • / sound, a ball-like space at frontal portion of the oral cavity was found, tongue was contracted, and sound was deep (舌縮而聲深). During /ㅡ/ sound, a flat air space between oral tongue and hard palate was created. Tongue was slightly contacted neither deep nor shallow (舌小縮而聲不深不淺). During /ㅣ/ sound, tongue was not contacted and Sound is light (舌不縮而聲淺). Tongue was moved forward making longitudinal oro-pharyngeal air space. So, I'd like to suggest that we had better change the explanation drawing from a philosophical modeling to a more scientific modeling from real vocal tract space modeling during articulating middle vowels of Hunminjeongeum.

  • Based on the basic concepts and roles of the Science Museum, the research and development of the "Sound Light" interaction exhibition contents and experience exhibition space aimed at providing the exhibition, education and experience of scientific principle directly related to daily life will be implemented in the "Sound Light" exhibition space of the Gwangju National Science Museum. The scope of the research is to define the conditions and elements of the museum's hands-on exhibition by examining the case and status of the existing science museum's experience-type content prior research, and research and development of experience-type exhibition scenarios and contents for children based on them. The results of this research and development content are firstly developed with the theme of light and sound as interactive hologram experience content. Second, by multi-faceted media facade through projection mapping by multiple projectors, visual wide and spectacular screen composition and animation are realized. Third, visitors-oriented exhibitions and experiences that can interact with visitors by moving various colors and sounds together. Finally, interactive content is provided through hologram interfaces through hologram screens to encourage active participation of many visitors in viewing rather than simply delivering exhibition information and to promote revisiting the exhibition. Through a series of studies, it was possible to research and develop contents and experience exhibition spaces with theme park characteristics, which are the trend of science museums.

  • In this paper, we present a software for placing instruments on stage based on the acoustic properties of the concert hall. In order to simulate the changes in sound depending on the positions of the instruments, we incorporated the idea of location-based reverberation effect which can be realized through the convolution of instrument sounds with the impulse responses from the respective instrument positions. And we developed a software with a real-time convolution engine which enables the user to conveniently simulate the resulting sound of various instrument placements. The software was tested with the impulse response data measured at two concert halls of the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts and Korean traditional instrument sounds. Results of these experiments show that simulated reverberation effects properly represent the spatial placement of instruments on stage.

  • Summary. Most of American pop music, which are dominating the hegemony of the global pop music market, have been derived from the culture of African Americans, most of whom were slaves of European immigrants. The music of black slaves must be the one of the greatest undisputed achievements that have most influenced the American history. Indeed, All of the mainstream pop music works around the world, including those in America, are the descendants of the black music with the gene of the black people. We can say, therefore, the music born through the Afro-American culture has become the music that every person around the world enjoys in the present. Accordingly, K-Pop music culture, centered in idol group, is also based on the black music. This fact suggests that the K-Pop culture can be spread into people in different customs or traditions with little resistance. The success factor of Motown, at the very center of the black music, which integrated the whole global music, is not only their incredibly outstanding music works, but also the self-consciousness the musicians have that they are strongly reluctant to settle down to present reality. This shall lead to the necessity of self-reflection for the Korean music market, which are obsessed with present popularity and only taking advantage of teenager market, and for those engaged in music business in Korea, who are lack of the artistic value and the consciousness as artist.

  • Hangeul as the Korean unique characters were invented according to some character-making principles and based on scholars' exhaustive researches. While most of the characters in the world evolved naturally, Hangeul was invented based on a precise linguistic analysis of the time, and therefore, it is most scientific and reasonable among various characters throughout the world. Nevertheless, Hangeul typeface designs do not seem to inherit the ideology of scientific and reasonable Hangeul correctly. For the square forms have been used intact due to the influences from the Chinese characters which prevailed during the time. If a single set of square characters should be designed, as much as 11,172 fonts should be designed, which suggests that advantages of Mangeul may not well be used fully; Hangeul was invented to visualize every sound with the combinations of 28 vowels and consonants. Problems of such square fonts began to be identified since 1900's when typewriters were introduced first from the West. Since a typewriter is designed with 28 characters laid out on its keyboard by using such combinations, the letters may be easily combined on it. The so-called the flexibility square-format typeface was born as such. Specially, the three-pairs fonts of these can be combined up to 67 letters including vowels and consonants. The three-pairs fonts system can help to solve the problems arising form the conventional square fonts and inherit the original ideology of Hangeul invention. This study aims to review the history of the three-pairs fonts designs facilitated by mechanic encoding of Hangeul and thereupon, suggest some desirable directions for future Hangeul fonts. Since the flexibility square-format typeface is expected to evolve more and more owing to development of the digital technology, they would serve our age of information in terms of both functions and convenience. Just as Hunminjongum tried to be literally independent from the Chinese characters, so the flexibility square-format typeface designs would serve to recover identity of our Hangeul font designs.
