When soybean sprouts aye grown in the closed condition (where the ratio of $\textrm{O}_2$ and $\textrm{CO}_2$ is 7 : 3), amount of $\textrm{CO}_2$ is increased and $\textrm{O}_2$ is decreased with the passage of time. At the same time, the amount of ethylene is automatically increased. By increasing the concentration of ethylene gas up to 0.5-1.0 ppm in the growth room, the length of sprouts was restricted to 6-7 cm and the thickness of sprouts was increased to 2.70$\pm$0.30 mm. The production of good quality sprouts which were fat and short was possible without application of any growth regulators such as indole-3-acetic acid known to have accumulation problem in humane body. To maintain the freshness during the transportation and prevent sprouts from rotting and bad smell at market, cold storage at 2-$5^{\circ}$ and airtightness which will restrict photosynthesis and respiration (higher than $10^{\circ}$) are needed. The freshness of sprouts is depended on the increase of $\textrm{CO}_2$ and the depletion of $\textrm{O}_2$ in the package. When the sprouts were stored below 1$0^{\circ}C$ (preferably below 8$^{\circ}C$), the concentration of $\textrm{CO}_2$ in the package remained below 30% for more than 60 hours, which was possible to keep sprouts in freshness without any offensive odor, But sprouts were maintained at $13^{\circ}$ for more than 25 hours, the concentration of $\textrm{CO}_2$ increased over 30% and produced an offensive odor. The little amount of $\textrm{O}_2$ gas was existing for 30 hours at $5^{\circ}$ but it was disappeared completely within 7 hours over $10^{\circ}$ and the sprouts became rot and produced severe offensive odor.
The essential factor of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), an acute lung injury accompanied commonly by sepsis syndrome is accumulation of neutrophils in lung tissue. The study attempted to confirm whether a lung injury would be decreased with the anti-inflammatory effect of germanium by the treated germanium prior to the development of ARDS and whether nitric oxide influence in suppressing a lung injury. Test groups were divided in the following structure for experiment; CON that has been administered with sodium chloride to airway, LPS administered with endotoxin for 5 hours in the same amount and 5 hours of endotoxin administered Ge+LPS following 1 hours of pre-treated germanium. The result of a test using experimental animals, infilteration of neutrophils (p<0.001) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was significantly decreased, the structure of lung tissue was preserved relatively well, and much neutrophils with distinct positive were observed on tunel staining which showed increase of apoptotic neutrophils in the pre-treated germanium group compare to the endotoxin administrated group. In observation of ultrastructural changes of cell in BALF, phagocytic alveolar macrophage was increased in alveolar space, the nucleus of most engulfed neutrophils were condensed, and some apoptosis neutrophils appears to be DNA fragmentation and effacement of cellular organelles were found in intercellular matrix in the pre-treated germanium group. However, the nitric oxide showed increase in all the groups excluding CON, and the nitric oxide effect such as degranulation diminishing of mast cells and apoptosis increase of neutrophils in the pre-treated group only. The situation appears that there was change in internal environment of the experimental animal by the pre-treated germanium before the nitric oxide is produced and the anti-inflammatory effect activated the pre-processed germanium by nitric oxide which activated following the change. Therefore, the nitric oxide created from macrophage in accordance with the pre-treated germanium appears to influence in alleviating a lung injury. Accordingly, acute lung injury is alleviated by the anti-inflammatory effect of germanium such as inhibition of neutrophils migration, induction of neutrophil apoptosis and increase of phagocytic function of phagocyte, and the nitric oxide produced from activated macrophage by germanium would influence in suppressing a lung injury.
Background: Although there are improvements of clinical symtoms after bronchodilator inhalation in COPD patients, it has been noted that there was no increase of $FEV_1$ in some cases. $FEV_1$ did not reflect precisely the improvement of ventilatory mechanics after bronchodilator inhalation in these COPD patients. The main pathophysiology of COPD is obstruction of airway in expiratory phase but in result, the load of respiratory system is increased in inspiratory phase. Therefore the improvement of clinical symptoms after bronchodilator inhalation may be due to the decrease of inspiratory load. So we performed the study which investigated the effect of bronchodilator on inspiratory response of vetilatory mechanics in COPD patients. Methods: In 17 stable COPD patients, inspiratory and expiratory forced flow-volume curves were measured respectively before bronchodilator inhalation. 10mg of salbutamol solution was inhaled via jet nebulizer for 4 minutes. Forced expiratory and inspiratory flow-volume curves were measured again 15 minutes after bronchodilator inhalation. Results: $FEV_1$, FVC and $FEV_1$/FVC% were $0.92{\pm}0.34L$($38.3{\pm}14.9%$ predicted), $2.5{\pm}0.81L$($71.1{\pm}21.0%$ predicted) and $43.1{\pm}14.5%$ respectively before bronchodilator inhalation. The values of increase of $FEV_1$, FVC and PIF(Peak Inspiratory Flow) were $0.15{\pm}0.13L$(relative increase: 17.0%), $0.58{\pm}0.38\;L$(29.0%) and $1.0{\pm}0.56L$/sec(37.5%) respectively after bronchodilator inhalation. The increase of PIF was twice more than $FEV_1$ in average(p<0.001). The increase of PIF in these patients whose $FEV_1$ was not increased after bronchodilator inhalation were 35.0%, 44.0% and 55.5% respectively. Conclusion: The inspiratory parameter reflected improvement of ventilatory mechanics by inhaled bronchodilater better than expiratory parameters in COPD patients.

Objectives: Previous studies have shown that periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) could be one of risk factors for cardiovascular morbidity. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between PLMS and blood pressure changes during sleep. Methods: We analyzed data from 358 adults (176 men and 182 women) aged 18 years and older who were free from sleep apnea syndrome (Respiratory Disturbance Index < 5) and sleep disorders such as REM sleep behavior disorder or narcolepsy. Demographic characteristics, polysomnography records, and clinical variable data including blood pressure, body mass index, alcohol, smoking, and current medications were collected. In addition, self-report questionnaires including the Beck Depression Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were completed. Blood pressure change from bedtime to awakening was compared between the two periodic limb movement index (PLMI) groups [low PLMI ($PLMI{\leq}15$) and high PLMI (PLMI > 15)]. Blood pressure change patterns were compared using repeated measures analysis of variance. Results: Systolic blood pressure in the high PLMI group was lower than that in the low PLMI group (p = 0.036). These results were also significant when adjusted for gender and age, but were not statistically significant when adjusted for BMI, alcohol, smoking, anti-hypertension medication use and sleep efficiency (p = 0.098). Systolic blood pressure dropped by 9.7 mm Hg in the low PLMI group, and systolic blood pressure in the high PLMI group dropped by 2.9 mm Hg. There was a significant difference in delta systolic blood pressure after sleep between the two groups in women when adjusted for age, BMI, alcohol, smoking, antihypertensive medication use and sleep efficiency (p = 0.023). Conclusion: PLMS was significantly associated with a decreasing pattern in nocturnal BP during sleep, and this association remained significant in women when adjusted for age, BMI, alcohol, smoking, antihypertension medication use and sleep efficiency related to blood pressure. We suggest that PLMS may be associated with cardiovascular morbidity.
