  • Regulation of respiration differs significantly between wakefulness and sleep. Respiration during wakefulness is influenced by not only automatic control but also voluntary and behavioral control. Sleep is associated with definite changes in respiratory function. With the onset of sleep, voluntary control of ventilation that overrides automatic control during wakefulness becomes terminated. Also ventilatory response to various stimuli including hypoxemia and hypercapnia is decreased. With these reasons respiration during sleep becomes fragile and unstable so that marked hypoxemia can be happened in patients with lung disease especially during REM sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea may also be developed if upper airway resistance is increased in addition to these blunted ventilatory responses.

  • 원예 생산물은 수확한 후에도 호흡 등의 생명현상을 지속한다. 즉, 원예 생산물의 수확 후 생명현상의 유지를 위한 주된 생리 및 생화학적 변화는 호흡의 증가, 에틸렌 합성 및 작용, 세포벽 붕괴에 의한 조직의 연화, 색소의 파괴 및 합성, 당과 유기산의 함량 변화, 방향물질의 생산 등이 있다. 이와 같이 수확된 원예 생산물은 영양분의 공급이 중단되어 자체내의 저장 양분을 기질로 소모함으로써 품질의 변화를 가져온다. 또한, 원예 생산물은 수확 시기에 에틸렌이 많이 발생하여 숙성과 노화가 촉진된다.(중략)

  • Sleep is not only an essential physiological function, but also serves important roles in promoting growth, maturation, and overall health of humans. There is increasing interest regarding the impact of sleep and its disorders on the regulation of inflammatory processes and end-organ morbidities, particularly in the context of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and their complications. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is an increasingly common health problem in children. In the last decade, the emergence of increasing obesity rates has further led to remarkable increases in the prevalence of OSAS, along with more prominent neurocognitive, behavioral, cardiovascular and metabolic morbidities. Although the underlying mechanisms leading to OSAS-induced morbidities are likely multifactorial and remain to be fully elucidated, activation of inflammatory pathways by OSAS has emerged as an important pathophysiological component of the end-organ injury associated with this disorder. To this effect, it would appear that OSAS could be viewed as a chronic, low-grade inflammatory disorder. Furthermore, the concurrent presence of obesity and OSAS poses a theoretically increased risk of OSAS-related complications. In this study, we will critically review the current state of research regarding the impact of insufficient and disrupted sleep and OSAS on the immune processes and inflammatory pathways that underlie childhood OSAS as a distinctive systemic inflammatory condition in children, and will explore potential interactions between OSAS and obesity.

  • 버섯은 수확 후 이산화탄소 발생량이 2$0^{\circ}C$에서 200-500mg$CO_2$/kgㆍhr로 호흡속도가 아주 높은 편으로 저장이나 유통 중에 호흡속도를 낮추는 것이 버섯의 품질유지에 효과적이다. 따라서 저장고 또는 포장내의 기체조성을 변화시켜 신선 농산물의 호흡속도를 조절하여 저장하는 CA(Controlled Atmosphere)저장법이나, MAP(Modified Atmosphere Packaging)저장법을 버섯 저장에 이용하는 연구들이 보고되고 있으며 환경기체조성이 저장중인 버섯의 생리적인 현상에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구도 보고되고 있다. The PIV measurements on the respiratory gas flow in human airway (호흡기 내 주기적 공기유동에 대한 PIV 계측)

  • The mean and RMS velocity field of the respiratory gas flow in tile human airway was studied experimentally by particle image velocimetry(PIV). Some researchers investigated the airflow for the mouth breathing case both experimentally and numerically. But it is very rare to investigate the airflow of nose breathing in a whole airway due to its geometric complexity. We established the procedure to create a transparent rectangular box containing a model of the human airway for PIV measurement by combination of the RP and the curing of clear silicone. We extend this to make a whole airway including nasal cavities, larynx, trachea, and 2 generations of bronchi. The CBC algorithm with window offset (64*64 to 32*32) is used for vector searching in PIV analysis. The phase averaged mean and RMS velocity distributions in Sagittal and coronal planes are obtained for 7 phases in a respiratory period. Some physiologic conjectures are obtained. The main stream went through the backside of larynx and trachea in inspiration and the frontal side in expiration. There exist vortical motions in inspiration, but no prominent one in expiration.

  • Changes in Oxygen consumption and filtration rates were investigated to understand physiological rhythms for 24 hours of the Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum. physiological rhythms in the oxygen consumption and filtration rates at 15$^{\circ}C$ and 25$^{\circ}C$ were showed diurnal tidal rhythms, appearing two peaks for 24 hours: maximum at night-high tide and minimum at day-low tide. No rapid variations in oxygen consumption and filtration rates for 24 hours appeared at two different water temperatures.

  • Persimmons suffer from such physiological disorders as flesh softening, peel blackening, and flesh browning, which occur rapidly particularly when exposed to ambient temperature after storage at low temperature, In this study causes of these disorders were examined in terms of respiration and ethylene production of the fruits. Jelly-like flesh softening, considered as symptom of chilling injury, rapidly developed within 3 days of exposure to ambient temperature without modified atmosphere (MA) packaging after low temperature storage. Disorder development was more suppressed at $30^{\circ}C$ than at $20^{\circ}C$; such temperature dependence is closely connected to ethylene production rate of fruits at both temperatures. Inhibition of ethylene production through MA packaging effectively reduced disorder development, which indicates ethylene production is closely related to jelly-like flesh softening disorder. Development of black-staining on peels occurs in fruits exposed directly to ambient temperature, but not in those packaged with thick PE-film. Flesh browning developed only under anaerobic respiration condition of high temperature and MA packaging with thick PE film, and occurred at quick reduction of available oxygen inside MA package at high temperature.

Correlations between Symptoms of Sleep Apnea and Respiration during Sleep (수면 무호흡의 증상과 수면 호흡의 상관관계)

  • Objectives: Symptoms of sleep apnea consisted of insomnia, excessive sleepiness during daytime, impaired cognitive functions and emotional disturbances. It was not so well known how these symptoms are correlated with various parameters of sleep and respiration, and what kind of psychophysiological processes are involved in development of these symptoms. Methods: In sixty patients with sleep apnea, sleep and respiration were studied by polysomnography of one night, also symptoms of sleep apnea were evaluated with the scales of insomnia, daytime sleepiness, emotional disturbance and cognitive impairment We studied correlations between apnea symptoms, and various parameters of sleep and respiration such as sleep efficiency, number severity of apnea, $O_2$ desaturation and number of snoring. Results: The result showing significant correlations are as follows. The patients with better sleep in insomnia scale showed more number of apnea, particularly more central type, and much more snoring in stage 3 sleep and mild desaturation of $O_2$. Excessive sleepiness during daytime correlated significantly with stage 1 sleep and its snoring, but correlated negatively with stage 2 sleep. However, no significant correlation was found with degree of $O_2$ desaturation. Emotional disturbance was more apparent in the patients with severe $O_2$ desaturation and smaller amounts of stage 4 sleep. Cognitive function was more impaired in cases of more REM sleep and less apnea. Conclusions: Symptoms of sleep apnea may occur through different causes and processes. The evaluation of apnea symptoms may be helpful to understand in some degree the condition of sleep and respiration during sleep in clinical setting.

  • 벼 저장에 영향을 주는 중요한 인자는 벼의 수분함량, 온도 및 습도이고, 이 이외에 생리적 현상으로서 곡물 자체의 호흡작용으로 인한 발열현상과 생물학적 요인으로는 해충, 미생물, 쥐 등이 있다. 따라서 저장성을 높이고 고품질로 유지하기 위해서는 저장 시 환경조건이 중요하며 현재 국내 환경에 적합한 벼 저장시설을 개발하기 위한 연구가 다각도로 진행되고 있다.
