  • Based on the 14 specimens collected from the Korean waters, we described the external morphology of Ocynectes maschalis in detail to provide morphological characteristics for species identification. The species from Korea is characterized by having a low first dorsal fin with a dark spot posteriorly, no dark blotches ventrally, three saddle-like blotches on dorsal midline posterior to the second dorsal fin, and two occipital cirri on head.

  • Morphological variation of the crusian carp, Carassius auratus, from Yongnam area in Korea was examined. In morphometric and meristic characters, mean values were different slightly among the polulations, whereas the range of variation was overlapped largely. In the present examination the number of spines in dorsal fin were 4-6. The majority of individuals appeared to be similar to Carassius auratus langsdorfii from Japan, but some individuals were quite different from them in having 66-83 gill rakers.

  • Morphological characteristics in the anamorphic states were described in three species of powdery mildew fungi, Microsphaera akebiae, M. picrasmae and M. schizandrae, which were parasitic on Akebia quinata, Picrasma quassioides, and Schizandra chinensis, respectively. All species were flexuous in foot-cells of conidiophores, producing conidia singly on conidiophores, devoid of fibrosin bodies in conidia, and producing germ tubes on the end of conidia.

  • Here, we present the first morphological description of a larval Naso hexacanthus (5.2 mm in body length) from the East China Sea identified by cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) barcoding. The larva had a kite-shaped body with long serrated first spine of dorsal and anal fins. There were four melanophores on the base of the anal fin, dense melanophores on the caudal peduncle, and scattered melanophores on the surface of the brain. There was one small spine on the snout and behind each eye, with serrations on the head, top of the eye, inner- and outer-preopercle, and on the lower part and side of the opercle. The morphological characteristics of larval N. hexacanthus identified by COI barcoding will be useful for species identification of larval fish.

  • Peltidium quinquesetosum n. sp. belonging to the family Peltidiidae is described from algal bed on subtidal rocky bottoms of Korea. The most characteristic features of this species are found in the setal number of distal segment of leg 1 endopod and the shape of leg 5 in female, and the caudal rami fully concealed by urosome in a dorsal view.

  • This paper is on a study for discrimination on relative sequence as a most actively discussed topic in forensic document fields. This paper describes the application of the visual spectral comparator and infinite focus microscope as observation methods for overlapping region of printing and writing lines. As a result, we could categorize overlapping region images and identify the sequence of printing and writing lines by various inks.

  • Korean temperate sea bass was examined for the taxonomically review. Based on the color pattern on the body sides and some morphometric characters, it was classified as two species, Lateolabrax japonicus and Lateolabrax sp.. Lateolabrax japonicus was redescribed and Lateolabrax sp. was provisionally described. Lateolabrax sp. is similar to L. japonicus, but differs from it by having some black spots on the body sides, fewer number of gill rakers, larger eye, higher position of the pored lateral line scales, and wider secondary body depth.

  • Based on a single adult and two juvenile fishes collected from the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Scartella emarginata was redescribed as the first reliable record from Korea. The species is characterized by having a median fringe of cirri on head, short branched supraorbital cirrus, and by lacking canine teeth on both jaws.
