  • During the 1960-1970s, a group of ceramic conservation scientists and ceramic historians in South Korea came together and established their own disciplines. While the two disciplines share the same ceramics as the subjects of their research, there has been little interaction between the two as their research outputs are articulated in remarkably different languages. This paper aims to address the following questions by using a case study that focuses on the research on white porcelains centered on the project of Gyeonggi Museum and a series of studies conducted by one of the museum's project research teams. First, what are the characteristics of and differences between the explanation styles of the two disciplines that share the same research subjects of ceramics? Second, why has the communication between the two disciplines become difficult? Third, if there can be a trading zone wherein the two disciplines would be able to communicate again, what would be its epistemic conditions? The focus of this paper is the relationship between scientific data and ordinary language, which the two disciplines have shared from their inception. By analyzing the relationship, I first argue that, as the analytical techniques of conservation science have become more developed, conservation science's data have gradually lost its relevance in ceramic history, in spite of a shared common language between them; Second, I argue that by recovering the import of shared language again, the scientific data can be placed in a different practical context, providing novel interpretations that are relevant and often consequential to ceramic history.

  • The purpose of this study is to reconsider the background of the acceptance and formation of Manmun Manhwa in colonial Joseon. It raises questions about previous discussions that cartoons have emerged as a political product of Japan's suppression of the media. Through this, this paper look at other possibilities in consideration of the colonial Joseon's situation of inner movement and the influx of popular culture. The term "Manmun-Manhwa" was first used in 1925, not by Ahn Seok-Ju. In addition, Ahn Seok-Ju returned home after studying in Tokyo and developed a cartoon in earnest. This paper traces the background and meaning of his interest in universal comics. Ahn Seok-Ju emphasized literary characteristics and image to all cartoonists. This marked the birth of a cartoonist with literary qualities and a cartoonist with the ability to write. This represents the cultural scene of the 1920s and 1930s, which was reorganized from text-oriented to Image text, with the emergence of a unique style of universal comics. In the end, Manmun Manhwa(comics) have emerged as the purpose of modern journalism and a strategy to popularize them. Considering the circumstances of this era, the acceptance of Manmun Manhwa is being examined in various ways in the connection between comics and essays. Like this, Manmun Manhwa are an important symbol of the colonial cultural arena, reorganizing not only cartoon history but also modern media into image text.

  • The working time for loading and transporting containers in the container terminal is one of the factors directly related to port productivity, and minimizing working time for these operations can maximize port productivity. Among working time for container operations, the working time of yard tractors(Y/T) responsible for the transportation of containers between berth and yard is a significant portion. However, it is difficult to estimate the working time of yard tractors quantitatively, although it is possible to estimate it based on the practical experience of terminal operators. Recently, a technology based on IoT(Internet of Things), one of the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, is being studied to monitoring and tracking logistics resources within the port in real-time and calculate working time, but it is challenging to commercialize this technology at the actual port site. Therefore, this study aims to develop yard tractor working time prediction model to enhance the operational efficiency of the container terminal. To develop the prediction model, we analyze actual port operation data to identify factors that affect the yard tractor's works and predict its working time accordingly.

  • Background: Postoperative morbidity and mortality in destroyed lung are relatively high. We tried to identify the prognostic factors affecting postoperative morbidity and mortality in destroyed lung through a retrospective study. Material and method: The retrospective study was undertaken in 112 patients who had undergone pneumonectomy or pleuropneumonectomy for destroyed lung at Severance Hospital from 1970 to 2000. We analyzed the correlation between postoperative morbidity and mortality and etiology, duration of disease, preoperative FEV1, presence or absence of peroperative empyema, operation timing, the side of operation, duration of operation, and operation type. Result: There were 55 men and 57 women, aged 20 to 81 years (mean 44 years). Etiologic diseases were tuberculosis in 86 patients(76.8%) including tuberculos empyema in 20 and tuberculous bronchiectasis in 4, pyogenic empyema in 12(10,7%), bronchiectasis in 12(10.7%), and lung abscess in 2(1.8%). Postoperative morbidity were 25%(n=28) and postoperative mortality was 6%(n=7). The presence of preoperative empyema(p=0.016), pleuropneumonectomy(p=0.037) and preoperative FEV1 of less than 1.75 L(P=0.048) significantly increased the postoperative morbidity, If operation time was less than 300min, postoperative morbidity(p=0.002) and mortality(p=0.03) were significantly low. Conclusion: Postoperative morbidity and mortality in destroyed lung were acceptable. Postoperative morbidity and mortality were significantly low when operation time was less than 300 min. Preoperative existence of empyema, pleuropneumonectomy and preoperative FEV1 of less than 1.75 L significantly increased postoperative morbidity.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the role of drinking pattern in the relationship of alcohol consumption by face-to-face interview in rural elderly(n=994) aged 60~64 in Dalsung County, April to September in 1996. Pattern of alcohol drinking included drinking status, alcohol drinking at the morning without breakfast, average drinks per day, frequency of drinks per month, quantity of alcohol drinking, kind of preferred alcoholic beverage and duration of alcohol drinking. Blood pressure was measured once in each subject using a portable automatic sphygmomanometer. Difference in means of systolic blood pressure, alcohol drinking status, alcohol drinking at the morning without breakfast, and kind of alcoholic beverage were statistically significant before adjusting covariates, but alcohol drinking status and alcohol drinking at the morning without breakfast were statistically significant after adjusting covariates. And difference in means of diastolic blood pressure, kinds of alcoholic beverage was statistically significant before adjusting covariates, but no variables was significant after adjusting covariates. Model I multiple regression for systolic blood pressure that included average drinks per day as the variable of drink pattern, age, educational attainment and, previous history of cardiovascular disease were statistically significant, and multiple regression for diastolic blood pressure, educational attainment, BMI, and previous history of cardiovascular disease were statistically significant. Model II multiple regression for systolic blood pressure that included drinking patterns variables except average drinks per day, previous history of cardiovascular disease were statistically significant. However, multiple regression for diastolic blood pressure, no variables were significant. So, inconsistent with prior research, a positive relationship was not found between average drinks per day and diastolic and systolic blood pressure. The effect of alcohol drinking patterns on blood pressure has public health as well as clinical relevance. The study should be replicated to determine the reliability of our findings.
