The Assessment of Blood Glucose Distribution according to the Fasting State and Glycemic Control Indicators for Diabetes Screening (금식 여부에 따른 혈당치 분포와 당뇨병 선별을 위한 혈당조절지표의 평가)

  • This study analyzed the distribution of the blood glucose level according to the fasting status. Moreover, a relationship was analyzed between fasting blood glucose level and glycemic control indicators. A total of 707 outpatients, who visited Dankook University Hospital, were included and classified into either the fasting group and the non-fasting group. The mean blood glucose level of each group was calculated and analyzed by sex, age, and clinic. In addition, blood glucose, HbA1c, fructosamine, and 1,5-AG were measured in 153 fasting health check-up patients, and the correlation between the blood glucose level and glycemic control indicators was evaluated. Blood glucose averages between the two groups (non-fasting 111.9 vs. fasting 103.6 mg/dL) were different (p<0.05); and the mean difference was lower in women (4.8 mg/dL) than in men (12.2 mg/dL). A significant difference of the median glucose values among the age groups was only observed in the non-fasting group (Kruskal-Wallis test, p<0.01), and not in the fasting group. A 1,5-Anhydroglucitol was estimated to be significantly correlated with the fast blood glucose level in the range of the criteria of impaired fasting glucose (IFG). We presented an assessment of the distribution of blood glucose level in accordance with the fasting status among outpatients, and estimated that 1,5-anhydroglucitol was well correlated with the fasting blood glucose than fructosamine and HbA1c, through the analysis of results of health screening subjects. It is suggested that the use of glycemic indicators that reflect short-term blood glucose control can be used together with the blood glucose measurement in the screening of diabetes mellitus.

Effects of Fruits and Stems of Opuntia ficus-indica on Blood Glucose and Lipid Metabolism in Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats (손바닥선인장의 열매와 줄기가 Streptozotocin으로 유발된 당뇨 쥐의 혈당 및 지질대사에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of fruits and stems of Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten Makino on water intake, feed intake, body weight, blood glucose level and glucose tolerance in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Forty Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into non-diabetic control (NC), diabetic control (DC), 8% Opuntia fruit (DOF), 5% Opuntia stem (DO-5) and 10% Opuntia stem (DO-10) groups. Fruits and stems of Opuntia ficus-indica were freeze-dried and ground before use in the experiment. Animals were fed experimental diet for 3 weeks. DOF, DO-5 and DO-10 groups showed lower water and feed intake as well as less body weight loss than DC group. The fasting blood glucose levels were 100 mg/dL for NC and 379 mg/dL for DC. Fasting glucose level of DOF was a significantly low level of 28% (p<0.05), whereas DO-5 and DO-10 had a decrease of 5% and 9% compared to DC. As for the glucose tolerance test, the highest blood glucose levels for NC and DC-10 group were observed at 30 minutes after glucose injection while those of DOF and DO-5 groups were after 60 minutes. DOF and DO-5 plasma insulin level improved. Plasma total cholesterol, triglyceride, non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) and LDL-cholesterol concentrations were also lower in DOF, DO-5 and DO-10 groups, although HDL-cholesterol level was only slightly affected by experimental diets compared to DC. These results suggest that the feeding of Opuntia ficus-indica fruits and stems improved blood glucose and lipid metabolism in STZ-induced diabetic rats.

Analysis and Evaluation of Glycemic Indices and Glycemic Loads of Frequently Consumed Carbohydrate-Rich Snacks according to Variety and Cooking Method (탄수화물 간식류 식품 및 조리방법에 따른 혈당지수 및 혈당부하지수)

  • This study examined the glycemic indices (GIs) and glycemic loads of carbohydrate-rich snacks in Korea according to variety and cooking method. The most popular carbohydrate snacks (corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, chestnuts, and red beans) from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey nutrient database were cooked using a variety of conventional cooking methods (steaming, baking, porridge, puffing, and frying). The GIs of foods were measured in 60 healthy males after receiving permission from the University Hospital institutional review board (KMC IRB 1306-01). Blood glucose and insulin levels were then measured at 0, 15, 30, 60, 90, and 120 min after consuming glucose, and each test food contained 50 g of carbohydrates (corn: 170.0 g, potatoes: 359.7 g, sweet potatoes: 160.3 g, chestnuts: 134.8 g, red beans: 73.1 g). GI values for test foods were calculated based on the increase in the area under the blood glucose response curve for each subject. Steamed potatoes ($93.6{\pm}11.6$), corn porridge ($91.8{\pm}19.5$), baked sweet potatoes ($90.9{\pm}9.6$), baked potatoes ($78.2{\pm}14.5$), steamed corn ($73.4{\pm}9.9$), and steamed sweet potatoes ($70.8{\pm}6.1$) were shown to be considered high GI foods, whereas baked chestnuts ($54.3{\pm}6.3$), red bean porridge ($33.1{\pm}5.5$), steamed red beans ($22.1{\pm}3.2$), fried potatoes ($41.5{\pm}7.8$), and ground and pan-fried potatoes ($28.0{\pm}5.1$) were considered as low GI foods. The results suggest that the cooking method of carbohydrate-rich snacks is an important determinant of GI values.

The effects of auricular acupressure on postprandial glucose, HbA1c, blood lipids in aged patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (이압요법이 제2형 당뇨병 노인의 혈당, 당화혈색소 및 혈중지질에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of auricular acupressure in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Data collection was conducted from March 16 to May 11, 2018. A total of 44 participants with type 2 diabetes were recruited from welfare facilities. Participants in the experimental group (n=22) and placebo control group (n=22) received auricular acupressure on diabetes-related points (shenmen, pancreas, appetite control point, thirst point, and master endocrine point) and diabetes-unrelated points. The intervention was implemented on 5 consecutive days per week for a total of 6 weeks. To examine the effects of treatment, postprandial glucose, glycated hemoglobin, and blood lipid levels were evaluated. Postprandial glucose levels in the experimental group exhibited significant reduction over time compared to those in the placebo control group (p=.030). Glycated hemoglobin levels in the experimental group decreased significantly (t=-2.44, p=.024). However, there were no significant differences in blood lipid levels between the two groups. This study demonstrates that auricular acupressure on diabetes-related points for 6 weeks was highly effective in decreasing blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Comparison of Characteristics and Dispersion of Fasting Blood Glucose Data by Administrative Districts and Gender Difference Using the 2017 'Korean Blood Glucose Reference Standard' (2017 '한국인 혈당 참조표준'을 이용한 행정구역별 남녀별 공복 혈당 데이터의 특성 및 산포성 비교)

  • This study aimed to investigate the differences in the upper and lower limits of the 95% distribution of fasting blood glucose (FBG) by age groups. We also analyzed the changes in the mean values and dispersion of the data using the Korean Blood Glucose Reference Standard raw data published by the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). Furthermore, the trends among 16 administrative districts were analyzed and any gender differences were determined. We also assessed whether the study results correlated with the relative standard uncertainty, as published by the NHIS. On the dispersion analysis using the differences between the upper and lower limits of the 95% distribution of FBG by age group, there were significant differences across gender and administrative districts (P<0.05). The gender differences in FBG measurements, as published by the NHIS, were significant across different administrative districts and age groups (P<0.001). This confirmed the need to recalculate the blood glucose reference standards for men and women. No significant correlation was observed between the relative standard uncertainty, as published by NHIS, and the dispersion and number of measurements analyzed in this study. However, it showed a high correlation with the measured mean value (R2=0.95). Therefore, further research on the reference standard and uncertainty is needed.

Blood glucose prediction using PPG and DNN in dogs - a pilot study (개의 PPG와 DNN를 이용한 혈당 예측 - 선행연구)

  • This paper is a study to develop a deep neural network (DNN) blood glucose prediction model based on heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) data measured by PPG-based sensors. MLP deep learning consists of an input layer, a hidden layer, and an output layer with 11 independent variables. The learning results of the blood glucose prediction model are MAE=0.3781, MSE=0.8518, and RMSE=0.9229, and the coefficient of determination (R2) is 0.9994. The study was able to verify the feasibility of glycemic control using non-blood vital signs using PPG-based digital devices. In conclusion, a standardized method of acquiring and interpreting PPG-based vital signs, a large data set for deep learning, and a study to demonstrate the accuracy of the method may provide convenience and an alternative method for blood glucose management in dogs.

Effects of Silk Protein Hydrolysates on Blood Glucose and Serum Lipid in db/db Diabetic Mice (실크단백질 효소 가수분해물이 2형 당뇨 마우스의 혈당 및 혈청지질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of silk protein enzyme hydrolysates on blood glucose and serum lipid in db/db diabetic mice. Twelve week-old-male C57BL/KsJ db/db mice were divided into two groups: diabetic control group and 0.25% silk protein hydrolysates solution group, which were fed for 8 weeks. Body weight increased in the silk protein hydrolysates group compared with the diabetic control group. There were no differences in food and water intake between the diabetic control and the silk protein hydrolysates groups. The weight of liver increased in the silk protein hydrolysates group while that of kidney increased in the diabetic control group. The blood glucose level increased about 18.0% in the diabetic control group after 8 weeks while that in the silk protein hydrolysates group increased about 5.8%. Also, silk protein hydrolysates improved the glucose tolerance in C57BL/KsJ db/db mice. There was no difference in total cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol concentration between the diabetic control and the silk protein hydrolysates group. Triglyceride concentration were lower in the silk protein hydrolysates group than in the diabetic control group (p<0.05) while HDL-cholesterol concentration were higher in the silk protein hydrolysates group than in the diabetic control group (p<0.05). This results suggest that administration of silk protein enzyme hydrolysates reduces significantly an increasing rate of 1]food glucose, decreases triglyceride, and increases HDL-cholesterol in C57BL/KsJ db/db mice.

The Preparation of Polyacrylonitrile Diagnostic Membranes for Blood Glucose Measurements (2) : Effects of Blood Constituents on the Measurements of Glucose Concentration (혈당측정을 위한 폴리아크릴로니트릴 진단막의 제조(2) : 혈액속의 성분들이 글루코우즈의 농도 측정에 미치는 영향)

  • Diagnostics membranes which were made of polyacrylonitrile were prepared for the measurements of blood glucose concentration. Final absorbances at 680nm through polyacrylonitrile diagnostic membranes were measured at various concentration of glucose in blood. It was found that the end-point results of varing absorbance values as time (K/S) had a linear relationship toward the blood glucose concentration. The effects of possible constituents in human blood on the glucose concentration measurements were examined. As a result, most of the chemicals did not affect seriously on the blood glucose measurements.

Effects of Testing and Storage Environments on the Blood Glucose Measurements by Using Phosphazene Diagnostic Membranes (측정환경과 보관환경이 포스파젠 진단막을 이용한 혈당측정에 미치는 영향)

  • Phosphazene diagnostic membranes were prepared to measure blood glucose level of diabetics. Final absorbances at 680nm through activated phosphazene membranes were measured at various temperature and humidity by varing concentration of glucose in blood. Measuring temperature and humidity did not seriously affected the end-point results of varing absorbance values as time (K/S). The effects of storage temperatures on the measurements of glucose concentration were studied after activated phosphazene diagnostic membranes were stored at various temperatures for 3 days, 1 week, 3 weeks, and 5 weeks. The stabilities of phosphazene dianostic membranes were confirmed even at RH 80%.
