Analysis of Relation between Foundation Stiffness and Deformation below Widening Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Sections (시멘트 콘크리트 포장확장시 포장하부지반의 강성과 변위발생의 상관성 분석)

  • Poor compaction of subgrade soil causes low stiffness and bearing capacity of sublayers so that faulting and differential settlements can be generated between new and old pavement surfaces in case of widening works. However, investigation of verifying the reason of producing the defects in the pavements are not performed in detail. In this study, several in-field tests including PMT and PBT were performed for obtaining stiffness of the sublayers in new and old pavements respectively of an widening project. Then, based on the obtained stiffness values and the measured deformations obtained by specially designed tilt meters, the main reasons of generating different deformations between the old and new pavement sections and the relationship between the deformation and stiffness are verified.

A Case Study of Back-analysis Technique in Tunnelling Using Extended Bayesian Method and Relative Convergence Measurement (확장 Baysian 방법과 상대변위를 이용한 터널 역해석 기법의 적용사례연구)

  • It is a very difficult task to estimate engineering properties of the ground when designing underground structures, especially in tunnelling. Therefore, a feed-back system to combine the data measured in construction field with priorly estimated information at the design stage is necessary. In this paper, 3-dimensional back-analysis in tunnelling, to which only relative convergence is applied as input values, is carried out to estimate the optimum geotechnical parameters. For this purpose, the Extended Bayesian Method (EBM), which appropriately combines the objective information with the subjective one, is applied to optimize engineering parameters and 3-dimensional numerical analysis is carried out to predict a trend of relative convergence occurrence. The data measured from two tunnelling sites are used to verify the applicability of the proposed back-analysis technique. from the results of analysis, the proposed back-analysis technique is verified.

A Numerical study on Behavior of Soft Clay Soils with Installed Buttress Type Self Supporting Composite Wall (격벽형 중력식 2열 합성소일벽(BSCW)공법을 적용한 연약점토지반의 거동에 대한 수치해석적 연구)

  • In this study, the displacement of soft clay layer with installed Buttress type Self supporting Composite Wall (BSCW) was investigated using numerical method. The model was validated using the field displacement data at the front center of BSCW and parametric analysis of the model was implemented at varied cohesion, elastic modulus of 3 different clay layers (soft, medium, and stiff). In addition, parametric study was also performed for varied center-to-center distance of bottom cement grouting columns installed by jumbo special pattern (JSP) method. The results of parametric study demonstrated that the displacement of BSCW is the most significant in soft clay layer and low center-to-center distance of grouting columns is required at relatively low elastic modulus of clay layer.

Damage Assessment Technique for Bridge Structures By Moving Load Tests and Optical Displacement Measurements (광변위 계측과 주행하중시험기법에 의한 교량구조의 손상도 추정기법)

  • In this paper, a damage assessment technique using a moving load test and optical sensors was studied to overcome the deficiency of measurement information in bridge maintenance. Continuous displacements by applying the reciprocal theorem to the test can make the assessment simpler and more practical. Numerical and experimental studies were performed to show the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed technique as well as the possibility of a more realistic assessment for large infrastructure. The results showed that the assessed damage levels are quite accurate, and similar to the exact values in actual damage locations, even in the experiments. The proposed technique is useful and practical for both detecting damage locations and damage quantities.

  • Smart Pole Measurement System was constructed with not only the core sensors of a GNSS receiver, a TRS sensor and a soil moisture sensor but supplementary installation of power supply and radio communication for monitoring steep slope sites. Also a data processing software for displacement extraction and visualization was developed. Smart Pole Measurement sensor is composed of a GNSS antenna at the top of the pole, a TRS sensor and a gyro sensor vertical below right of the antenna and a soil moisture sensor at the bottom of the pole. The sensor combination extracts not only ground combination in real time but transltion, slide, settlement and soil moisture content. This measuring/monitoring system which cosists of data receiving part, data collection/transfer part and data processing part was built to exercise their functions and then test measuring/monitoring was conducted by introducing artificial displacement and the results were analyzed to evaluate field applicability.

  • The introduction of geodetic methods of absolute displacement monitoring in tunnels has significantly improved the value of the measurements. Structurally controlled behavior and influences of an anisotropic rock mass can be determined, and the excavation and support adjusted accordingly. Three-dimensional finite element simulations of different weakness zone properties, thicknesses, and orientations relative to the tunnel axis were carried out and the function parameters were evaluated from the results. The results were compared to monitoring results from Alpine tunnels in heterogeneous rock. The good qualitative correlation between trends observed on site and numerical results gives hope that by a routine determination of the function parameters during excavation the prediction of rock mass conditions ahead of the tunnel face can be improved. Implementing the rules developed from experience and simulations into the monitoring data evaluation program allows to automatically issuing information on the expected rock mass quality ahead of the tunnel.

A Study on the Reinforcement Effects of Fully-Grouted Rock Bolts (전면접착형 록볼트의 보강효과에 관한 연구)

  • The axial stress in rock bolt, the shear stress at the bolt-grout interface and the neutral point are analyzed to understand the mechanical behavior of rook bolt. To analyze the support effects of rock bolt in various geological conditions, numerical analyses are performed with regard to bolt spacing and bolt length in several geological conditions and tunnel sizes. Through the numerical analyses, the distributions of maximum tensile stress and shear stress are determined. And the excavation width of underground opening affects the position of the neutral point. In the circular opening supported by pattern bolting, the increase of confining pressure, the reduction of plastic zone, and that of ground displacement are determined by using the radial stress increase ratio, the plastic zone reduction ratio and the displacement reduction ratio respectively. The results of this study can be applied to a practical tunnel design through understanding of the trends of these support effects.

  • In the construction operation, foundation work should be done in advance for the building structure to be installed. This foundation work include a number of activities such as excavation, ground water prevention, piling, wale installation, etc. Caution should be taken in the operation because the dynamics of earth movement can cause a significant failure in the temporary structure. The temporary structure, therefore, should be constantly monitored to understand its behavior. This paper introduces the USN-based monitoring system to automatically identify the behavior of the temporary structure in addition to visual inspection. The autonomous capability of the monitoring system can increase the safety in the construction operation by providing the detailed structural changes of temporary structures.

Experimental Study on the Static Behavior of the Spliced PSC Box Girder (분절 PSC 박스거더의 정적거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The main objective of the paper is to investigate the static behavior of a prestressed concrete (PSC) girder that has been spliced with precast box segments. A 20 m long full-scale spliced PSC girder is fabricated and tested to compare its static performance against a monolithic girder. The monolithic girder has the same geometric and material properties with respect to the spliced girder. This includes infernal strain, deflections, neutral axis position, and crack patterns for both girders. The test also consists of monitoring relative displacements occurring across the joints. Both the horizontal displacement (gap) and vertical displacement (sliding) are measured throughout the loading procedure. All results have been compared to those obtained from the monolithic girder. It has been demonstrated that the spliced girder offers close behavior with respect to the monolithic girder up to the crack load. Both girders exhibits ductile flexural failure rather than abrupt shear failure at joints.

Deformation Behavior Underground Pipe with CLSM (유동성 채움재를 이용한 지하 매설관의 변형특성 연구)

  • During construction of circular lifeline pipe, the non-proper compaction along the pipe and the decrease of compaction efficiency are the main problems to induce the failure of underground pipe. The use of CLSM(controlled low strength materials) is one of the applications to overcome those problems. In this research, the numerical analysis by PENTAGON FEM program was carried out for 20 cases with the couple of combinations on bedding materials, backfill materials, and pipes. From the FEM analysis, the use of CLSM as backfill materials reduced the settlement of ground surface and the deformation of pipe employed. In case of the vertical deformation on the pipe, common soil backfill for flexible pipes showed 2 times for rigid pipes, but CLSM backfill case did less deformation than the soil backfill for rigid pipes. CLSM backfills for rigid pipes showed the similar results. Judging from the FEM analysis, the use of CLSM increases the structure capacity of the underground pipes.
