  • Simulation plays a pivotal role in the analysis of complex systems. In this study, a job shop manufacturing system has been analyzed through DBR (Drum-buffer-rope) simulation. Specific attention has been put to examine the rate of due-date achievement. We first derived key factors affecting the system performance. We then developed ARENA simulation program based on DBR of TOC (Theory of Constraints) concepts. Based on the performance measure, factors, and experimental design, we obtained the results. We have drawn meaningful results through examination of the results. The results obtained from this study may provide a good base for practical applications.

  • As foreign investors' share holdings in Korean firms have dramatically increased since 1998 following the financial deregulation on the limit of foreign stock investment, the concern over the negative impacts the foreign investors would bring on the firms' financial policy has been growing too. Foreign investors were perceived to require the firms of excessive payments of cash dividends sometimes with threat of hostile takeover trials detering the firm from investing its cash flow in the physical facilities and RandD eroding their potential growth capabilities. We examine the impact of foreign investment on the firms' dividend policy using 234 listed firms' panel data over the sample periods of 1998 to 2005 employing various panel regression methodology. Foreign shareholders are found not to be related or even negatively related to the payout ratio(dividend/net income), but positively and statistically significantly related to the ratio of cash dividends to book of asset, negatively to the dividend yields. Considering the payout ratio is the most appropriate measure for the dividend payment, we can not support the arguments that the foreign investors' holdings have induced the excessive dividend level in Korean firms.

  • The first, this study analyzed empirically the effects of net profit on sales, total asset turnover and debt ratio on return on equity, the second, verified debt' s mediating effect on return on investment and return on equity and finally, tested the effect of adjusted debt ratio on return on equity in the small medium sized enterprises. Generally speaking, using debt has a positive effect on return on equity. Meanwhile, using debt accelerate return on equity through leverage effect in the quadric function curve model. Eventually, using debt has a positive and negative effects on return on equity. Accordingly, because of the debt' janus-faced reality, using debt is restricted within the level that operating cash flow(or return on asset) excess interest(or rate of interest).

  • This paper explores the relationship between shipping firm's investment and debt-ratio characteristics. Using a panel of 41 shipping firms from 2006 to 2011, this study finds evidence that debt/asset ratio and leverage are negatively associated with firm's investment activities. This relationship shows that volume of debt and capital structure are critical decision factor on firm's investment and capital financing. In terms of financial expenses to sales, positive relationship is existed with firm's investment finding that financing cost is important to investment. The previous study of the firm's investment in other sector also shows a negative relationship with debit ratio. This study is also interested in the extent to which the firm's investment is affected by firm size because there is general agreement that smaller firms have less access to external capital markets. As results, smaller companies group have more positive relationship with factors related to financing cost such as financial expenses to sales and tax. On the other hand, bigger companies group shows the evidence that firm investment is positive relationship with asset size. The analysis corresponding to economic fluctuation shows that debit ratio is more sensitive to firm's investment during a recession. On the other hand, financial expenses to sales is more related to firm's investment during an economic boom.

  • This study investigates firm-specific financial variables that determine investment or speculative grades from the viewpoint of firms, which are one of the major stakeholders related to the credit rating. We employ an ordered probit model for our analysis with the sample data from 1999 to 2015 for listed firms in the Korean stock markets. For investment grades, operating margin, sales, market-to-book, dividend payment, capital expenditure ratio, and tangible asset ratio have a significantly positive impact on credit ratings. In the subsample for speculative grades, the coefficients of the dividend payment, retained earnings ratio, and capital expenditure ratio are significantly positive while short-term debt ratio and R&D expenditures have a significantly negative impact on credit ratings. For the analysis before and after 2009, when the Credit Information Use and Protection Act was strengthened after the global financial crisis, the coefficients of the capital expenditure ratio, cash ratio, and tangible asset ratio are significantly positive in the subsample for investment grades before 2009, but not significant after 2010. The coefficient of the long-term debt ratio is more significantly negative than that of the short-term debt ratio before 2009, for speculative grades, but short-term debt ratio has a more negative effect on ratings than long-term debt ratio after 2010. Surprisingly, the coefficient of the R&D expenditures is significantly negative in both investment and speculative grades since 2010. Our findings are inconsistent with the conjecture that the increase in R&D expenditures enhances the possibility of creating cash-flow by raising the investment growth opportunity, and thus affects positively the credit rating.

  • The characteristics of intermediate-level waste treatment services are likely to have a negative effect because they act as a factor in promoting incentives of earnings management in the relationship between financial characteristics and earnings management in companies which are possible for earnings management. The researchers conducting this study attempted to empirically verify relationships between financial characteristics and earnings management against domestic construction waste disposal companies in consideration of the characteristics of intermediate-level waste disposal businesses, and the results are as follows. As construction waste disposal businesses grew larger, and the trade receivables collection period lengthened, the intention to increase profits via real activities strengthened. As the ability to generate cash via sales activities weakened, and the difference between the EBITDA margin and the operating margin was lower than the difference in industrial average ratio, discretionary accruals and earnings management via real activities were greater. In particular, there were differences in the variables of intermediate treatment business characteristics which reveal moderating effects by financial characteristics. This study is meaningful in that the scope of relationships between financial characteristics and earnings management in accounting is expanded to cover the construction waste disposal industry.
