  • Objective: This study aimed to develop a longitudinal predictive model that identifies first-grade children who are at risk for ADHD and to investigate the factors that predict the probability of belonging to the at-risk group for ADHD by using machine learning. Methods: The data of 1,445 first-grade children from the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, and 8th waves of the Korean Children's Panel were analyzed. The output factors were the at-risk and non-risk group for ADHD divided by the CBCL DSM-ADHD scale. Prenatal as well as developmental factors during infancy and early childhood were used as input factors. Results: The model that best classifies the at-risk and the non-risk group for ADHD was the LASSO model. The input factors which increased the probability of being in the at-risk group for ADHD were temperament of negative emotionality, communication abilities, gross motor skills, social competences, and academic readiness. Conclusion/Implications: The outcomes indicate that children who showed specific risk indicators during infancy and early childhood are likely to be classified as being at risk for ADHD when entering elementary schools. The results may enable parents and clinicians to identify children with ADHD early by observing early signs and thus provide interventions as early as possible.

  • In this study, we have look through the national progress of computer science education in South Korea and analyzed the main subjects and contents of each period. We suggests the ways to evolve the current computer science education in terms of class hours for computer science education, hierarchical instructions, and the limitation of current national curriculum. In South Korea, it has been leaded the computer science education in the world since the it was promoted in earnest since 1995. Based on the recently revised national curriculum, South Korean government are taking efforts to nurture a leader through computer science education in terms of the students' future skills. However, it should be promoted to strengthen the ability of not only problem-solving ability through programming education, but also balanced computing and digital literacy through enhancing the ICT skills. In order to improve the curriculum of computer science education in elementary school of South Korea, a sufficient class hours of computer science education should be secured first.

The Effect of Upper Elementary Children's Parentification on their Smartphone Dependency in Double-Income Families: The Sequential Mediating Effect of Ambivalence over Emotional Expression and Loneliness (맞벌이 가정 초등학교 고학년 아동의 부모화 경험이 스마트폰 의존도에 미치는 영향: 정서표현양가성과 외로움의 순차적 매개효과)

  • This study aimed to examine the effect of parentification on the smartphone dependency of upper elementary school children in double-income families and to verify whether ambivalence over emotional expression and loneliness sequentially mediates the relationship between parentification and smartphone dependency. The participants were 311 upper-elementary school students (4th to 6th graders; 126 boys, 40.5%) in doubleincome households residing in Seoul, Gyeong-gi, and Incheon. The data were collected through an online self-report questionnaire completed by the participants and were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and Mplus 8.7 software. The results can be summarized as follows. Firstly, the direct effect of parentification on the smartphone dependency of the children from double-income families was statistically insignificant. Secondly, ambivalence over emotional expression mediated the effect of parentification on smartphone dependency, while loneliness did not. Lastly, parentification influenced smartphone dependency through the sequential mediating channel of ambivalence over emotional expression and loneliness. In conclusion, these findings indicate that interventions for smartphone-overdependent children from double-income families should place emphasis on children's psychological difficulties attributed to parentification. Specifically, this study highlights the importance of alleviating the levels of ambivalence over emotional expression and loneliness to address the issue of children's smartphone dependency in double-income families, suggesting possible involvement and support at both household and societal levels.

  • In engineering education, stimulating students' questions and encouraging learning participation are crucial for achieving higher-order thinking abilities. This study aims to investigate the use and effect of an online communication channel in fostering engineering students' questioning abilities. Consequently, in this research, we gauged students' satisfaction with an engineering class that implemented a communication channel, and scrutinized the changes in their perceptions regarding the significance of questions, their engagement in learning, and their academic self-efficacy. In addition, we interviewed the students who participated in the class. The outcomes are as follows: Firstly, student satisfaction improved compared to the previous semester's class where the communication channel was not utilized. Secondly, learners' understanding of the importance of asking questions positively escalated, alongside their actual frequency of posing questions. Thirdly, there was an improvement in learners' active engagement in their studies and their academic self-confidence. The findings of this research suggest that communication channels should be employed to motivate learners to pose questions and involve students in effective learning.

  • In the current information and knowledge-based society, a nation's economy power heavily depends on IT-related industry and technology. In this sense, most countries are trying to foster IT industry by developing new and innovative IT technologies. Traditionally, only a few talented persons have been leading the whole IT industry. Thus, it is very important and necessary to identify and support the gifted children in IT in early ages for development of IT industry. The purpose of this paper is to investigate study performance of the gifted children in IT for different grades. Our research is focused on especially 4th grade students, 5th grade students, and 6th grade students in elementary schools. Among various abilities of the gifted children in IT, in this paper, we are interested in programming ability and logical thinking ability. To our best knowledge, there is no research work on study performance depending on different grades of the gifted children in IT. For this purpose, the gifted students in gifted science education center attached in a university at Seoul Metropolitan Area are selected and their test scores for 8 years were collected and analyzed. The statistical analysis results show that there is no significant difference among 4th grade students, 5th grade students, and 6th grade students for programming ability and logical thinking ability. We hope that this result can help suggest and propose study contents, curriculum, principles and laws for the gifted education in IT.
