  • The confinement of a storage system to accommodate spent fuel and radioactive material must be designed and estimated so that the storage system is safe during a storage period. The confinement can be estimated by calculation of the allowable leakage rate in compliance with ANSI Nl4.5 or ISO 12807. Accordingly, the allowable leakage rate was estimated in compliance with ISO 12807 in the case of storage of 24 PWR spent fuels and 24-conditioned spent fuels. In the case of the 24 PWR spent fuel assemblies, the allowable leakage rate was estimated as $7.43{\times}10_{-11}m_3/s$, in the case of the 24 conditioned spent fuel assemblies, the allowable leakage rate was estimated as $1.80{\times}10_{-10}m_3/s$. Therefore, the confinement condition in the storage of the conditioned spent fuel is easier than that for the storage of the PWR spent fuel.

  • A mobile agent is a program which represents a user in a network and is capable of migrating from one node to another node, performing computations on behalf of the user. In this paper, we suggest a scheme that can safely recover mobile agent using the checkpoint that is saved at the platform that it visited previously and restart its execution from the abnormal termination point of the mobile agent. For security, mobile agent uses its public key to encrypt the checkpoint and the home platform uses the private key of the mobile agent to decrypt the encrypted checkpoints at the recovery stage. When home platform receives the checkpoint of the mobile agent, home platform verifies the checkpoint using message digest. Home platform verifies the correctness of the checkpoint by comparing the message digest generated at checkpoint mention time with the message digest generated at mobile agent recovery time.

  • Limit state design (LSD) and allowable stress design (ASD) are two main types of soil nailing design methodologies. In the LSD method, stability is determined by applying individual coefficients to ground strength, working load and etc. The ASD method calculates the safety factor and compares it with the minimum safety factor to determine the stability. The global design trend of soil nailing system is changing from the ASD method to the LSD method. The design method in Korea still adopts the ASD philosophy while others mostly do the limit state design. In this study, four soil nail design methods, 'FHWA GEC 7' in U.S. (2015), 'Clouterre' in France (1991), 'Soil nailing - best practice guidance' in U.K. (2005), 'Geoguide 7' in Hongkong (2008), and 'Design guide for slope in construction work' in Korea (2016) were applied to the evaluation of the stability and the results were analyzed comparatively in brief. It is revealed that the design method of 'the overall stability of soil nail walls' in Korea is the most conservative and next those by FHWA, Clouterre and CIRIA become more conservative in order. However, the difference of results obtained from FHWA and Clouterre is negligible. Also, this study found out that efforts to improve domestic design criterion are needed.

  • Downdrag force develops when a pile is driven through a soil layer which will settle more than a pile. There is no obvious criterion for application of the current pile design method considering the negative skin friction. Therefore, in this study, numerical analyses were performed to investigate the behavior of a single pile subjected to negative skin friction and their results were used to determine the applicability of the current design method. Including three different sites in Song-do area and two different cases with friction pile and end bearing pile conditions, total six cases were considered. The load-settlement relationships and the neutral points were estimated for different end bearing conditions and the allowable bearing capacity of piles with negative skin friction was investigated through parametric studies. Based on the results showed that the negative skin friction made a major influence on the settlement of a pile and its stress. However the allowable bearing capacity may not be influenced by the negative skin friction. Compared with the allowable bearing capacity obtained from the ultimate bearing capacity with the safety factor of 3, the current design method with the safety factor of 3 underestimated the allowable bearing capacities regardless of the end bearing conditions. On the other hand, the current design method with the safety factor of 2 yielded reasonable results depending on the end bearing conditions.

  • Daily intakes of 14 preservatives were evaluated by using their maximum permitted levels(MPL) and national food disappearance data in 1998. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of each preservatives were compared with corresponding acceptable daily intakes (ADIs). EDIs of dehydroacetic acid, sodium dehydroacetate, $\rho$-hydrobenzoic acid ester, propionic acid, sodium propionate and calcium propionate were less than 2% of ADI and judged to be safe. However, EDI of sorbic acid and potassium sorbate were 76.61 mg/person/day and it reached 5% of its ADI.. EDI of benzoic acid and sodium benzoate were 85.65 mg/person/day and it reached 31% of its ADI. The highest intake of benzoic acid came from carbonated drink.

  • BAT (Best Available Technology economically achievable) assessment is indispensible to effective management policy of industrial wastewater discharging facilities such as setting effluent limitations guidelines for individual industry based on the wastewater characteristics and treatment efficiency, making effluent limitations guidelines for new sources, and calculation of the reducible amount of emission load conforming to a total emission general plan and enforcement plan. This study reviewed foreign cases of BAT assessment and condition of domestic wastewater discharging facilities, and suggested BAT assessment guideline suitable for the domestic conditions. The major assessment factors and flow are; (1) Identification of pollution source characteristics, (2) Identification and survey on technology, (3) Selection of candidate technology, (4) Assessment of legislation adaptation, (5) Assessment of environmental factor, (6) Assessment of economical acceptability, (7) Total weighting value factor assessment on technological factor, and (8) Total assessment and final BAT selection. The result of this study can be utilized as a major policy data and a base of industrial wastewater management system.

  • The purpose of a phase I clinical trial is to determine the maximum tolerated dose(MTD) of a new drug. This paper investigates the performance of standard method, continual reassessment method and accelerated titration designs in phase I clinical trials. Especially we study the precision and safety at the MTD of these methods. We utilize hyperbolic tangent function and power function to define dose-toxicity model. For each method, expected toxicity rate at MTD is computed and compared with target toxicity probability. We also suggest some modifications of these methods and show some improvements in performance.
