  • This paper studies the contribution of imports and inward foreign direct investment (FDI) as a vehicle of technology transfer onto the EU new member states at both macroeconomic and industry level. The paper takes the effectiveness of the recipient's utilization into account by constructing a new index, the so-called Effective Absorption (EA) Index, to measure ability to absorb and utilize the foreign technology in the recipient country. Using data from 12 donors and 10 recipients from 1998 to 2009, the study at macroeconomic level indicates that technical spillovers of foreign research and development (R&D) play more crucial role relatively to domestic R&D on total factor productivity (TFP) growth of the new member states. Imports are found as the major vehicle of technical spillovers rather than inward FDI. The study at industry level is conducted by using data from 17 manufacturing industries of 10 donors and 6 recipients during 1998 to 2009. The empirical results also support the findings at country level. The patterns of technology transfer are different across industries. Nonetheless, technical spillovers exhibit significantly high contribution on TFP growth in high-tech manufacturing industries.

  • Recently, foreign direct investment of Korea has increased significantly. Foreign direct investment is motivated by various reasons and renewable energy investments in foreign countries can be performed by many causes. Korean companies can enjoy the export of products, related EPC contracts, acquisition of the knowledge of the project management technique, pre-occupying effect of the market and profit itself. Wind power projects have biggest share in the investment amounts among the renewable energy business. So, in this study, one wind farm project was selected and supposed to be invested in China, USA, Germany and UK at the same time and the effect of electricity price, corporate income tax, inflation rate and interest rate of debt were analyzed. The result showed that investing in Germany is most profitable because of the highest electricity price and electricity price and debt interest rate are the most sensitive factors for IRR. This approach would be helpful to make decisions in investing foreign wind power projects.

  • With the increasing speed of internationalization of corporations under WTO system foreign direct investment is considered as the important means of international cooperation as well as avoiding trade barrier. From this point of view the study on foreign direct investment of Korean corporations is of great importance. Many studies till now, however, are concerned with the macroscopic analysis of foreign direct investment of Korean corporations, not with the establishment of strategy appropriate to the environment of host country and the investment performance. In order to meet the problems mentioned above this thesis aims at accomplishing the following three tasks. (1) synthetic assessment of existing theories of foreign direct investment. (2) systematic adjustment of factors of environment in the foreign direct investment activities. (3) analysis of above factors in the foreign direct investment of Korean textile industry and proper proposal of strategic model for the individual corporation. The results of analysis according to the aim of the study are as follows: (1) To lead foreign direct investment successfully, variable and effective information-presentation should be offered with priority. (2) The investment strategy through regional diversification is required. (3) The localization of decision making has to be attempted assertively. (4) The global network system is needed for more recommendable foreign direct investment. (5) More aggressive and outgoing attitude like developing into the local market and obtaining the high-technology is desperately needed.

  • This study investigated the effect of protection of property right on foreign direct investment. With the US. multinational corporations over the periods from 2000 to 2008, this study used the FEM and system GMM, and found that the change of protection of property right level positively affects attracting foreign direct investment while protection of property right level itself does not. In the analyses on high income and low income countries(by income level), only the change of protection of property right level positively affects attracting foreign direct investment in low income countries. In considering the problem of heteroscedasticity on the error term, this study used FGLS and PCSE estimation methods. It is reported that the change of protection of property right level positively affects attracting foreign direct investment while protection of property right level itself does not. And only the change of protection of property right level positively affects attracting foreign direct investment in low income countries. This result means the change of protection of property right level is a key determinant to attract foreign direct investment.

  • The Korean Government recently has been focused on strengthening competitiveness of order and stimulating construction market in the international construction industry. It has planned to extend the ODPs (overseas development projects) in order to diversifying the international construction market of which is domestic construction companies, placing too much emphasis on plant projects of the Middle East. However, literature review of risk analysis in the ODPs shows that the number of case study is several. Therefore, Authors asserted the necessity of risk analysis in the ODPs. The purpose of this study is to suggest a methodology that find KRFs (key risk factors) in the ODPs and analyze them, using AHP and Fuzzy theory. As a result, the 37 KRFs are selected and explained characteristics of them. A future direction of this study is to suggest a risk management model in the ODPs and prove feasibility of it.

  • Due to various reasons (normally financial constraints in developing countries), it becomes common to change of the business model from state-run projects to Private Investment Projects (Public Private Partnership) in the global railway businesses. However, due to the nature of railroads compared with other types of infrastructure such as roads and others, railway business require considerable construction cost and O&M cost through the business development, construction, and operation and management stages. Therefore, private investment railway projects, especially in developing countries, can be problematic in terms of the potential for uncertainty when return on investment cannot be guaranteed. In order to strengthen the competitiveness of domestic companies when entering overseas railroad PPP projects, this study proposes PPP-related risks and their countermeasures by reviewing global railroad trends and identifying Korea's weakness in managing international railroad projects.

  • Foreign direct investment is the means for companies to enter the overseas market and strengthen their competitiveness. The holding of intellectual properties, representing advantages of firms, may affect foreign direct investment. By expanding previous studies, we define intellectual properties as including trademarks and design as well as patents. Using a random-effect panel data model, we examine the effects of both intellectual properties of Korea and host countries on Korea's foreign direct investment in 128 countries from 1981 to 2014. The results are as follow. First, the coefficients of Korea's intellectual properties, patent, trademark, and design are significantly positive. This implies that Korean firms may invest abroad to take their advantages of technologies, brand value, and the capability of product differentiation. Second, except for patents, intellectual properties of host countries have a positive impact on foreign direct investment. In other words, foreign direct investment to acquire the ability of branding or product design from host countries may occur. Third, the coefficients of Korea's intellectual properties are significantly greater than those of host countries' properties. Foreign direct investment to take advantages of the firms' capabilities overseas is greater than one to acquire knowledge of host countries. Finally, Korea's intellectual properties have a greater positive impact on foreign direct investment in high growth countries than in low growth countries. It is interpreted that Korean firms are more motivated to exploit their intellectual properties in developing countries with a high growth than developed countries. Overall, it is confirmed that Korea's foreign direct investment not only to utilize some advantages but also to seek the brand value or product differentiation ability from host countries can occur. Our findings provide the contribution that some innovative activities in firms and R&D investments policies which encourage the possession of intellectual properties can improve foreign direct investment.
