  • This study identified the habitat use pattern and migration distance of spot-billed ducks during winter that occur for breed and wintering. The study was carried out using GPS-mobile phone based Telemetry (WT-300) to provide the research results as basic data for protection and management of the habitats of water birds in Korea. The tracking devices (WT-300) were attached to a total of twenty spot-billed ducks collected from the rivers and reservoirs in Gyeonggi-do Anseongcheon, Chungcheongnam-do Seocheongun, Jeollabuk-do Mangyunggang, Dongjingang, and Jeollanam-do Haenamgun. It was found that spot-billed ducks used rivers most frequently as their habitats (47.3%), followed by rice fields, ocean, inland wetlands, and tidal flats. While spot-billed ducks used rice fields at night time and ocean, inland wetlands, and tidal flatss at day time, they used rivers regardless of time. Change rate of habitat use pattern was highest between 6:00am and 8:00am and between 16:00pm and 18:00pm. The average daily migration distance was $0.75{\pm}0.27km$/2hours and accumulated migration distance was 8.95km. Spot-billed ducks covered the longest migration distance between 6:00am and 8:00am and between 16:00pm and 18:00pm; the distance they moved during the periods from 6:00am to 8:00am and from 16:00pm to 18:00pm was 2km but during the rest of the time, it was less than 1km for equivalent durations. The time when spot-billed ducks covered the longest migration distance also corresponds to the time when they showed the greatest change rate of habitat use pattern.

  • The surface and bottom water were sampling in ten stations of the coastal area of Chagwi-Do, Jeju Island, which was repeated 6 times in several different months(September, November, 2004 and March, May, August, and November 2005) in order to examine the physico-chemical characteristics of water. The temperature varied by approximately $16^{\circ}C$, ranging somewhere between 1$12.2^{\circ}C$ and $28.9^{\circ}C$. Specifically, the temperature of bottom water was $13^{\circ}C$, implying the emergence of low temperature water. The salinity ranged from 30.2 to 34.9%o, and the lowest salinity in August may be attributable to the effect of land-based water. N/P ratio, the growth factor of phytoplankton, ranged from 5 to 76, which varied depending on the season and station. The ratio, however, was over 22 on the average, suggesting that phosphate phosphorus is an factor that restricts the growth of phytoplankton. TOC in the concentration of organic carbon ranged between $92.5{\mu}M$ and $438.3{\mu}M$, and the mean was $217{\mu}M$. DOC ranged from $82.5{\mu}M$ to $299.2{\mu}M$, and the mean was $130{\mu}M$. The ratio of DOC/POC was 60% with abundant dissolved organic carbon.

  • This article reviews several microwave instruments employed in observation and analysis of tropical cyclones (TCs), typhoon, and hurricanes. Microwave signals are useful for observing tropical cyclones with severe storms since it isn't severely absorbed by the clouds and rain in the storm. The instruments discussed include scatterometers, microwave radiometers, synthetic aperture radars (SARs), and rain radar from space. The date such as winds, rainfall and cloud-distribution in the TCs obtained by microwave instruments provide important informations for forecasting the intensity and path of the typhoon. For example, there're wind-distribution provided by SSM/I which has a wide swath, detailed wind fields from ERS-1, 2 scatterometers and RADARSAT-1 SAR and TRMM's rain radar pro 떠 ding high resolution. Operational satellite instruments lunched recently have improved upon the problems of low resolution and narrow swath indicated at the beginning microwave remote sensing. Understanding and practical using sufficiently about the microwave instruments will serve for searching the features such as generation and development of the TCs.

  • This paper discusses about results of advanced buckling strength design for several kinds of perforated plated in the twin-hull car-ferry. For medium / small sized high speed vessels with a length of more than 50 meters and a length / width ratio of more than 12, such as car-ferries, it is highly possible that the buckling strength becomes weak due to the relatively thin thickness and the use of low strength capacity such as mild steel. Especially, it becomes big problem about weak buckling rigidity around the opening to access purpose in the perforated. As regarding safety design point of view for perforated plate, it is necessary to clarify buckling strength and ultimate strength by the distribution of in-plane load distribution around the opening. In this study, nonlinear series analysis using ANSYS was performed to clarify the influence of parameters such as aspect ratio, opening ratio and opening shape affecting the buckling and ultimate strength characteristics of the perforated plate under axial compression and we are derived the optimum design as buckling strength point of view. Based on these results, the governing factor determining the buckling strength of the perforated plate was the opening ratio, and the aspect ratio and the shape of the hole were not influenced.

  • This paper considers the Marine Traffic Risk Assessment for fixed and moving targets, which threaten officers during a voyage. The Collision Risk Assessment Formula was calculated based on a dynamic ship domain considering the length, speed and maneuvering capability of a vessel. In particular, the Navigation Risk Assessment Model that is used to quantitatively index the effect of a ship's size, speed, etc. has been reviewed and improved using a hybrid combination of a vessel's dynamic area and the Collision Risk Assessment Formula. Accordingly, a new type of Marine Traffic Risk Assessment Model has been suggested giving consideration to the Speed Length Ratio, which was not sufficiently reflected in the existing Risk Assessment Model. The larger the Speed Length Ratio (dimensionless speed), the higher the CJ value. That is, the CJ value is presented well by the Speed Length Ratio. When the Speed Length Ratio is large, states ranging from [Caution], [Warning], [Dangerous] or [Very Dangerous] are presented from a greater distance than when the Speed Length Ratio is small. The results of this study, can be used for route and port development, including dangerous route avoidance, optimum route planning, breakwater width, bridge span, etc. as well as the development of costal navigation safety charts. This research is also applicable for the selection of optimum ship routing and the prevention of collisions for smart ships such as autonomous vessels.

  • This paper suggests study of basic structure design and structural analysis for the twin car-ferries. The rules and methodology for the strength analysis of medium and small sized high speed vessels with a length of more than 50m and a length/width ratio of more than 12, such as car-ferries, have not been clarified yet. Therefore, in this paper, the members scantling were carried out using the KR Rule, and the car-ferry exclusive vessel standard were further applied to verify the structural strength the design. The scantling of the members is based on the Korea Classification standards, and the car-ferries standards were additionally applied to verify the structural strength of the design. Especially, the ultimate strength of hull girder was additionally carried out by using car-ferry exclusive vessel standard, and proposed to overcome ambiguity of design by existing standard. The results of this study are expected to be useful as basic data related to structural design and structural analysis of high speed twin-hull car-ferries. The present car-ferry design has a sufficient safety margin in strength point of view according to the KR rule.

  • In this study, we proposed a pier of pontoon-type, "Very Large Floating Structure" (VLFS), with the length of 500m, breadth of 200 m and height of 2 m in Yeosu domestic port. Since this structure ought to endure wave loads for long periods at sea, it is essential to analyze the wave response characteristics. Direct-method is used to analyze the fluid-structure problem and the coupled motion of equation is used to obtain response results. The structural part is calculated by using finite element method (FEM) and the fluid part is analyzed by using boundary element method (BEM). Dynamic responses caused by the elastic deformation and rigid motion of structure are analyzed by numerical calculation. To investigate response characteristics of the pier in regular waves, several factors such as the wavelength, water depth, wave direction and flexural rigidity of structure are considered. As a result, wave response of pier changed at the point of $L/{\lambda}$ 1.5 and represented the torsional phenomenon according to the various incident waves. And the responses showed increasing tendency as the water depths increase at the incident point in case of $L/{\lambda}=8.0$ and peak point of vertical displacement amplitude moved from side to side as the flexural rigidity of structure changes.

  • This study conducted numerical simulations to analyze the wave characteristics(distribution) depending on the directional changes of waves in the Nakdong river estuary by using SWAN(Simulating WAves Nearshore) model. The results from the tests are summarized as below. The wave height rates are generally highly distributed with the incident waves from the S, SSE, SSW, SE, SW in sequence. When the waves from the S, SSW, SSE directions are predominant, the bigger waves were observed in front of sandbars. According to the results of the wave steepness against the wave direction, at the east coast of Gadeok island(northwest of Nakdong estuary), where has mild seabed slopes, the wave height rates distribute in the range of 0.4~0.6; the wave height rates over the west coastal region of Dadeapo(southeast of Nakdong estuary) are 0.5~0.6. The wave height rate tends to be rapidly decreased over the east region of Nakdong river estuary rather than its west region.

  • The effects of temperature, salinity and irradiance on the growth of the dinoflagellate Akashiwo sanguinea isolated from Jaran Bay were examined in the laboratory. Maximum specific growth rate($0.28day^{-1}$) was observed with combination of $25^{\circ}C$ and 30 psu. Optimal growth (${\geq}80%$ of maximum specific growth rate) was obtained at $25^{\circ}C$ with salinities of 15~35 psu. This results indicated that A. sanguinea is a stenothermal of the high water temperature and euryhaline species. The irradiance-growth curve was described as ${\mu}=0.31(I-16.87)/(I+51.19)$. The compensation photon flux density ($I_0$) and half-saturation photon flux density ($K_I$) were $16.87{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ and $84.93{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$, respectively. In conclustion, A. sanguinea has advantage physiological characteristics for the species succession at the coastal areas in summer with sufficient irradiance, high water temperature and large salinity gradient.
