  • In order to investigate characteristics of waves and currents varying in space in the Haeundae coast in winter, numerical simulations by using a 2-D spectral wave model(SWAN) and 2-DH hydrodynamic model(Delft3D) were carried out in this study. The results of numerical simulations were validated with the field data collected at several different locations in the study area in February, 2014. From the numerical simulations, it was found that waves and currents were significantly influenced in terms of direction and magnitude by bottom topography characterized by straggling rock crops covered with sea grasses. The coupling of SWAN and Delft3D models also revealed that alongshore currents directing from the east to the west were developed in the nearshore, due to the influence of larger waves with the main incident direction from the east.

  • Two-dimensional MT (Magneto-Telluric) modeling is performed to verify the validity of difference arrow for GDS(Geomagnetic Depth Sounding) survey. The electromagnetic mutual coupling between the sea and in-land conductor is used as a criterion that judges the validity of difference arrow. In this study, the mutual coupling between them is examined according to the spatial distance between them and the period of magnetic variations. The difference arrow is valid for conductors located at surface which are far from the sea or when the long period is used, but the mutual coupling is weak for buried conductor in all the periods. However, when a conductor extends vertically down to the deep part, the validity of difference arrow is in doubt, since the strong mutual coupling influences up to the long period. Therefore, to remove the known conductor effect such as sea effect from the observed induction arrow, the mutual coupling between them must be examined and the caution must be exercised in interpreting the resultant difference arrow if mutual coupling between them is strong.

  • In this paper, the validity of the numerical model of fishes' behavior presented in our earlier paper was examined by the whiteness test on the residual of numerical model and by the comparison between experiment and simulation on several indexes represented by fishes' swimming characteristics. The validity of the numerical model was proved statistically by means of the whiteness test of the residual. The similarity was confirmed by comparison between experiment and simulation for the swimming trajectory of fishes, the mean distance of individual from wall, the mean swimming speed and the mean distance between the nearest individuals. These results suggest that the behavior of fishes according to the flow speed in three-dimensional space can be estimated partially by the numerical model presented in our earlier paper. However, a long-term approach to improve the modeling technique on the behavior of fishes may be needed before applying the numerical model presented in our earlier paper to real fishing ground.

  • In recent years, the need for ship-to-ship has emerged around the world as the volume of tanker carriers increases. In the case of STS mooring, a safety review should be carried out on other standards since the characteristics are different from the mooring at a typical wharf. However, there is no separate standard about STS in Korea. Therefore, in this study, STS mooring simulation and sensitivity analysis were performed using OPTIMOOR program, a commercial numerical analysis program, to identify STS mooring characteristics. The target sea area is modeled at D2 anchorage of Yeosu Port in Korea, and modeling of the target ship is selected as the case of VLCC-VLCC. Based on this, we tried to establish the standard for STS mooring safety evaluation. Numerical simulation results show that the STS mooring changes depending on the ship load condition, weather condition(wave period and wave height), encounter angle and pre-tension of mooring line. In addition, a risk matrix was created to set the safe external force range in the sea area. It is expected that the mooring characteristics of the STS can be grasped by this result and contribute to the revision of the mooring safety assessment standard.

  • In this study, shallow-water design waves are estimated for various return periods based on statistical analysis of extreme waves observed 13 years at four stations on the Korean east coast (Sokcho, Mukho, Hupo, Jinha). These values are compared with the results from SWAN simulation by using the deep water design waves conventionally used in Korea (KORDI, 2005). It was found that the simulated values of the shallow-water design waves are comparatively smaller than the values from the extreme value analysis, expecially below 30 years frequency, which implies possible under-estimation of the deep-water design waves on the Korean east coast.

  • Tests using a middle velocity propulsion impact machine (MVPIM) were performed to verify the impact resistance capability of sandwich concrete panels (SCP) in a modular liquefied natural gas (LNG) outer tank, and numerical models were constructed and analyzed. $2{\times}2m$ specimens with plain sectional characteristics and specimens including a joint section were used. A 51 kg missile was accelerated above 45 m/s and impacted to have the design code kinetic energy. Impact tests were performed twice according to the design code and once for the doubled impact speed. The numerical models for simulating impact behaviors were created by LS-DYNA. The external steel plate and filled concrete of the panel were modeled as solid elements, the studs as beam elements, and the steel plates as elasto-plastic material with fractures; the CSCM material model was used for concrete. The front plate deformations demonstrated good agreement with those of other tests. However the rear plate deformations were less. In the doubled speed test for the plain section specimen, the missile punctured both plates; however, the front plate was only fractured in the numerical analysis. The impact energy of the missile was transferred to the filled concrete in the numerical analysis.

  • We developed a computational method on coupled dynamics of tracked vehicle on seafloor and long flexible pipe. The tracked vehicle is modeled as rigid-body vehicle, and the linked flexible pipe is discretized according to a lumped-parameter model. The equations of motion of the rigid-body vehicle on the soft seafloor are combined with the governing equations of flexible pipe dynamics. Four Euler parameters method is used to express the orientations of the vehicle and the flexible pipe. In order to solve the nonlinear coupled dynamics of vehicle and flexible pipe an incremental-iterative formulation is implemented. For the time-domain integration $Newmark-\beta$ method is adopted. The total Jacobean matrix has been derived based on the incremental-iterative formulation. The interactions between the dynamics of flexible pipe and the mobility of the tracked vehicle on soft seafloor are investigated through numerical simulations in time domain.

  • In recent years, strong typhoons have passed South Korea almost every year and severe damages were incurred directly and indirectly. However, instances where wave and wind data were procured from the offshore approach path of the typhoon are very rare and thus researchers are experiencing difficulties in obtaining calibration and verification data of typhoon-generated wave modeling. This paper provides a synthesis of records of observations by the Korea Meteorological Administration and Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology on storm waves generated by the typhoons SONGDA, NABI, and SHANSHAN that passed from 2004 to 2006 in order to help researchers interested in typhoon-generated wave numerical modeling. Although the trajectories of typhoon NABI and SHANSHAN were east of the Korea Strait, a significant wave height of 8.3 m was measured at Namhyeongjedo located east of Geojedo. Moreover, an unprecedented significant wave height of 12.2 m was measured for both typhoons at a station 1.4 km away from Yeongil Bay breakwater. Meanwhile, a comparative analysis of data obtained with a ocean data buoy at Geojedo and a Directional Waverider at Namhyeongjedo showed maximum wave heights that were similar but considerably different significant wave heights.

  • The influence of leodo Ocean Research Station structure to surrounding atmospheric flow is carefully investigated using CFD techniques. Moreover, the validation works of computational results are performed by the comparison with the observed data of leodo Ocean Research station. In this paper, we performed 3-dimensional CAD modelling of the station, generated the grid system for numerical analysis and carried out flow analyses using Navier-Stokes equations coupled with two-equation turbulence model. For suitable free stream conditions of wind speed and direction, the interference of the research station structure on the flow field is predicted. Beside, the computational results are benchmarked by observed data to confirm the accuracy of measured date and reliable data range of each measuring position according to the wind direction. Through the results of this research, now the quantitative evaluation of the error range of interfered gauge data is possible, which is expected to be applied to provide base data of accurate sea surface wind around research stations.

  • A sediment transport calculation considering cohesive force is proposed to deal with the transport phenomena of cohesive sediment. In the proposed calculation, each sand particle is assumed to be surrounded by a thin layer of mud. The critical Shields parameter and bed-load sediment transport rate are modified to include the cohesive force acting on the sand particle. The proposed calculation is incorporated into a two-way coupled fluid-structure-sediment interaction model, and applied to wave-induced topographic change of artificial shallows. Numerical results show that an increase in the content ratio of the mud, cohesive resistance force per unit surface area and water content cause increases in the critical Shields parameter and decreases in the bed-load sediment transport rate, reducing the topographic change of the shallow without changing its trend. This suggests that mixing mud in the pores of the sand particles can reduce the topographic change of shallows.
