In Korea, modern geomorphology has developed as one of main subjects in geography, such as in Europe. Geomorphology is one of the most advanced specialties in the geography dicipline, since foundation of Korean Geographical Society in 1945. Untill 1960's study, first generation of the Korean geomorphologists trained the younger ones, together with energetic research activities. Their great works in education and research established the base of ulterier development of the geomorphology in Korea. Since 1970s, research manpower and quality has incresed rapidly, partly due to the various international activities and cooperations of Korean geomorphologists. Owing to above development, Korean geomorphologist was able to found "The Geomorphological Association of Korea" in 1990 and publish "Journal of GAK", since 1994. Furthermore, geomorphologists are playing important roles in interdisciplinary academic societies, such as "The Korean Quaternary Assocition". Still 1960s, our research had focused on the identification and interpretation of erosional surfaces in Korea Peninsular. Of course, W.M. Davis's "Geographical Cycle Theory" and L.C. King's "Pedimentation Theory" had a great influence on the Koerans' works. After 1970s, the study of erosional surface played the important role in setting up the morphoclimatic viewpoint and methodology. Research scope tend to be notably broad and various than it was untill 1960's. Disposotion of the scientific methods and techniques become more and more apparent. These trends of research has settled precise descreption and interpretation of actual landforms, based on the careful field works, scientific measuring, and analisis, rather than methodology focused on the particular master theories. Recent geomorphological researches show the scope from climatic geomorphology and Quaternary geomorphology to granite and limestone weathering, pedo-geomorphogenic environment and periglacial landforms, focused on the small-to-medium scales. And then there have been new trying to interprete erosional surfaces such as hillslopes and terraces. Also, studies of coastal and plain landforms have been successfully developed. Recent new trends show the quantitative and analytic modelling using field measurement and laboratory work, and study on the human impacts on the natural landforms.y on the human impacts on the natural landforms.

To evaluate the causes of beach erosion in Sinji-Myeongsasimni Beach, external forces, such as tides, tidal currents, and waves, were observed seasonally from March 2019 to March 2020, and the surface sediments were analyzed for this period. In addition, the shoreline positions and beach elevations were regularly surveyed with a VRS GPS and fixed-wing drone. From these field data, the speed of the tidal currents was noted to be insufficient, but the waves were observed to af ect the deformation of the beach. As the beach is open to the southern direction, waves of heights over 1 m were received in the S-SE direction during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Large waves with heights over 2 m were observed during typhoons in summer and fall. Because of the absence of typhoons for the previous two years from July 2018, the beach area over datum level (DL) as of July 2018 was greater by 30,138m2 compared with that of March 2019, and the beach area as of March 2020 decreased by 61,210m2 compared with that of March 2019 because of four typhoon attacks after July 2018. The beach volume as of March 2019 decreased by 5.4% compared with that of July 2018 owing to two typhoons, and the beach volume as of September 2019 decreased by 7.3% because of two typhoons during the observation year. However, the volume recovered slightly by about 3% during fall and winter, when there were no high waves. According to the sediment transport vectors by GSTA, the sediments were weakly influxed from small streams located at the center of the beach; the movement vectors were not noticeable at the west beach site, but the westward sediment transport under the water and seaward vectors from the foreshore beach were prominently observed at the east beach site. These patterns of westward sediment vectors could be explained by the angle between the annual mean incident wave direction and beach opening direction. This angle was inclined 24° counterclockwise with the west-east direction. Therefore, the westward wave-induced currents developed strongly during the large-wave seasons. Hence, the sand content is high in the west-side beach but the east-side beach has been eroded seriously, where the pebbles are exposed and sand dune has decreased because of the lack of sand sources except for the soiled dunes. Therefore, it is proposed that efforts for creating new sediment sources, such as beach nourishment and reducing wave heights via submerged breakwaters, be undertaken for the eastside of the beach.
This study was conducted to reclassify Yongheung series based on the second edition of Soil Taxonomy and to discuss the formation of Yongheung series in Jeju Island. Morphological properties of typifying pedon of Yongheung series were investigated and physico-chemical properties were analyzed according to Soil Survey Laboratory Methods Manual. The typifying pedon contains 3.2~3.4% oxalate extractable (Al + 1/2 Fe), less than 85% phosphate retention, and higher bulk density than $0.90Mg\;m^{-3}$. That can not be classified as Andisol. But it has an argillic horizon from a depth of 15 to 150 cm and a base saturation (sum of cations) of less than 35% at 125 cm below the upper boundary of the argillic horizon. That can be classified as Ultisol, not as Andisol or Alfisol. The typifying pedon has 0.9 % or more organic carbon in the upper 15 cm of the argillic horizon and accordingly, can be classified as Humult. It has a clay distribution in which the percentage of clay does not decrese from its maximum amount by 20% or more within a depth of 150 cm from the mineral soil surface, and keys out as Palehumult. Also that meets the requirements of Typic Palehumult. That has 35 % or more clay at the particle-size control section and has mesic soil temperature regime. Yongheung series can be classified as fine, mixed, thermic family of Typic Palehumults, not as fine, mixed, thermic family of Typic Hapludalfs. Most soils distributed in the southern coastal areas in Jeju island which have a humid climate are developed as Andisols. But Yongheung series distributed in this areas and derived from mainly trachyte, trachytic andesite, and volcanic ash are developed as Ultisols.
This article aims to find method to mix a harmless hardening agent and soil generated during construction to make paving materials. The main purpose of this research is to get rid of the harmfulness(Chromium (VI), etc.) of cement which has been generally and frequently used as a hardening agent and strengthen it so that it can be used for the general foundation solidification and stabilization of civil engineering/construction structures such as dredging soil treatment, marine structure foundation treatment, surface soil stabilization, and river bank erosion prevention. NSS(Natural Stabilizer Soil) used for this study takes as its chief ingredient the mixture of lime and staple fibers extracted from natural fibers. It increases the shearing strength of soil that it improves the support and durability of the foundation and prevents flooding and frost as well. The pH measured to know its eco-friendliness was 6.67~7.15, and according to the migration testing, only Pb and CN were lower than the standards, so it can be said that NSS has almost no harmful components in it. According to the result of uniaxial strength testing, when the mixture ratio of weathered soil to NSS was 6%, about 1,850kpa strength was expressed. And according to the result of CBR. testing to figure out its appropriateness as a paving material, the CBR of the foundation was 4%~6%. But when the mixture ratio of NSS is over 6%, the water immersion CBR. is over 100%; thus, it is expected that it will show great utility as a paving material.
This study is to compare differences in the depositional environments of natural beaches with those of beaches developed with artificial structures in the East Coast of Korea. Naksan-Osan beaches were selected for the examination of natural beaches and Anmok-Yumjun beaches for that of developed beaches. The study was performed on the foreshores and backshores of the selected beaches, and was based on the field research during the flood period of year 2004 and the dry period of year 2005. In Naksan-Osan beaches, pain size is fuel and sorting is better from northern coast to southern coast. Furthermore, sediment undergoes changes regularly and seasonal variations are small. But in Anmok-Yumjun beaches, grain size is coarser and sorting is worse than in Naksan-Osan beaches, showing irregular tendencies. The characteristic features of the two beaches would be effected by longshore currents which change along the type of coast line and have an effect on sediment. Especially, long shore currents interrupted by artificial structures in Anmok-Yumjun beaches may cause sedimental environment changes. In Anmok-Yumjun beaches, harbor expansions will be continued, and thus more changes are expected to occur in the beaches.
Reliable assessment of Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) changes greatly improves many practical issues in hydrography, socio-geographical research such as the observation of erosion and accretion, coastal monitoring, ecological effects evaluation. Remote sensing imageries can offer the outstanding capability to monitor nature and extent of land and associated changes over time. Nowadays accurate analysis using remote sensing imageries with high spatio-temporal resolution is required for environmental monitoring. This study develops a methodology of mapping and change detection in LULC by using classified Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-2 (KOMPSAT-2) multispectral imageries at Jeonbuk and Jeonnam provinces including protected tidal flats located in the west coasts of Korean peninsula from 2008 to 2015. The LULC maps generated from unsupervised classification were analyzed and evaluated by post-classification change detection methods. The LULC assessment in Jeonbuk and Jeonnam areas had not showed significant changes over time although developed area was gradually increased only by 1.97% and 4.34% at both areas respectively. Overall, the results of this study quantify the land cover change patterns through pixel based analysis which demonstrate the potential of multispectral KOMPSAT-2 images to provide effective and economical LULC maps in the coastal zone over time. This LULC information would be of great interest to the environmental and policy mangers for the better coastal management and political decisions.

This study is to see the recovery effect of the Deltacon method by investigating the amount of sand deposition, the topographical cross section and the vegetation structure; and to derive the effective recovery method of coastal erosion area. The target areas of this study include Jinri coastal dune, Bajireum coastal dune and Seopori coastal dune in Deokjeok-do Island, Ongjin-gun, Incheon. In order to assess the current status of the coastal erosion area recovery, the soil profile structure map was prepared on the site and then the amount of sand deposition within 1m was calculated indoors. The vegetation recovery status of the costal erosion area was assessed via the analyses of the topographical profile structure and the plant community structure, and we aim to derive the effective recovery plan of the Deltacon method with the results. With the Deltacon method, structures with ductile material, special non-woven fabric bags filled with soil and vegetation can be performed therefore the structuralstability and prevention of sand erosion can be achieved. The amounts of sand deposition of Bajireum coastal dune, Seopori costal dune and Jinri costal dune were calculated $0.98{\sim}2.54m^3$, $1.02{\sim}2.96m^3$, and $0.27{\sim}0.75m^3$, respectively, and it is considered that the costal erosion recovery is actively performed for Bajireum costal dune and Seopori costal dune. The analysis results of vegetation structures by topography show that the installation of the send collecting net in steep areas has been highly effective and the Deltacon-constructed target areas have been restored to vegetation and the costal dune, which is similar to the natural dune. The investigation of the plant community structure in Deokjeok-do Island costal dune, Incheon displayed similar research results of the existing costal dune flora and confirmed the emergence of Lathyrus japonicus, Carex kobomugi, Elymus mollis, Vitex rotundifolia, and Calystegia soldanella and others. In order to carry out further effective recovery with the Deltacon method, improvements to rootage of herbaceous vegetation are needed in areas without foredune herbaceous vegetation, and continuos maintenance & management monitoring of connected windbreak forest to costal dunes are also necessary.

The Holocene mud deposits in the southeastern innershelf of the Korean Peninsula were studied using the shallow seismic reflection profiles coupled with sediment sampling. The Holocene mud deposits are developed as a belt in the innershelf area from the mouth of the Nakdong River to off Pohang along the coastline. The surficial sediments in the study area gradually become finer and well sorted from south to north. The seismic facies in the Holocene sequence change northward from parallel reflectors in the mouth of the Nakdong River and northeastward prograding reflectors in the southern part off Ulsan to transparent layer in the nearshore off Ulsan to Pohang. The regional difference of seismic facies indicates that the Holocene sediment characters are varied with localities. By combining the surficial sediments properties with seismic facies patterns, the suspended sediments mostly supplied from the Nakdong River may be transported northward along the shore by the north-flowing Tsushima warm current. The Holocene mud sequence overlying the ravinement surface which is produced by erosion of underlying sediments during a rapid transgression can be interpreted as the highstand system tracts probably formed during the highstand of sea level similar to the present-day sea level.
The geotextile have been used in filtration and drainage for over 30 years in many applications of civil and environmental projects. Geotextile tube is compound technology of filtration and drainage property of geotextile. Geotextile have been used for various types of containers, such as small hand-filled sandbags, 3-dimensional fabric forms for concrete paste, large soil and aggregate filled geotextile gabion, prefabricated hydraulically filled containers, and other innovative systems involving containment of soils using geotextile. They are hydraulically filled with dredged materials. It have been applied in coastal protection and scour protection, dewatering method of slurry, and isolation of contaminated material. Recently, geotextile tube technology is no longer alternative construction technique but suitable desired solution. This paper presents the behavior of geotextile tube composite structure by 2-D limit equilibrium and plane strain analysis. 2-D limit equilibrium analysis was performed to evaluate the stability of geotextile tube composite structure for the lateral load and also the plane strain analysis was conducted to determine the design and construction factors. Based on the results of this paper, the three types of geotextile tube composite structure is stable. And the optimum tensile strength of geotextile is 151kN/m and maximum pumping pressure is 22.7kN/m.

High-resolution multichannel seismic data were collected in the coastal area near the Gori nuclear power plant to investigate Quaternary fault pattern and timing. A 12 channel streamer, a sparker, and a portable recorder were used for data acquisition. Because the group interval of the streamer was 6.25 m and the sparker can generate acoustic waves with the frequency content of up to 500 Hz, the data show a significant improvement both in horizontal and vertical resolution. The area surveyed is covered with 30-40 m thick Holocene sediments that constitute the mud belt along the southeastern coast of Korea. The survey area is characterized by the well discriminated Pleistocene and Holocene boundary and shallow gas-charged zones. A number of Quaternary faults were found in the sediment column, that are nearly vertical and extend north-south. The Quaternary faults, arranged at a spacing of a few hundred meters, suggest that they were formed in response to compression, although some of them reveal extensional characteristics. Locally, faults disrupt Incised-channel fills that are interpreted to have formed in the early stage of transgression after the beginning of the Holocene. Seismic sections suggest that shallow gas in the mud belt sediments made its way upward through the fractured fault planes. The tectonism responsible for the opening of the East Sea has not persisted since the late Miocene, but vigorous Quaternary faulting activity in the vicinity of the southeastern Korean Peninsula indicates that tectonic stability has yet to be achieved in this region underlain by the hotter than normal mantle.
