Ocean waves are the driving force for the sediment transport and the beach process. However, wave actions are nonlinear and non-stationary, and the response of the beach is inconsistent in terms of reaction rate and magnitude. Therefore, the beach process is difficult to predict accurately. The purpose of this study is to identify the correlations between the shoreline change and ocean waves observed in the east coast of Korea. The relation of the beach width obtained from video monitoring at five sandy beaches and the wave data obtained from nearby wave monitoring at three points was analyzed. Although the correlations estimated over the whole data sets was not significant, the correlations estimated based on the seasonal period or wave conditions provided more noteworthy information. When the non-exceedance probability of the wave height was greater than 0.99, the wave period and beach width showed strong negative correlations. In case the non-exceedance probability of the wave period was greater than 0.99, the wave height and beach width showed strong negative correlations as well. Furthermore, the erosion rate of the beach width increased when the primary wave direction was close to normal to the coastline. Little significant seasonal or monthly change was found between the beach width and the wave, but it was greatly affected by intensive events such as typhoons. Thus, it is necessary to analyze in detail the wave height or period level explaining the change of beach width for more relevant and practical information.
Korean Peninsula is surrounded by ocean on three sides. Because of this geographical quality over 97% of export and import volumes are exchange by sea. Foreign ship and international passenger vessels carries foreign tourist and globalization and internationalization increases this trends. Leisure population grows with national income increase and interest of ocean. And accidents and incidents rates are also increases. Korea Coast Guard's jurisdiction area is 4.5 times bigger than our country. The length of coastline is 14,963km including islands. One patrol vessel is responsible for 24,068km and one coast guard substation is responsible for 94km. Efficient patrol activities can not be provided. This research focus on this problem. Analyze the status and trends of maritime crime and suggest efficient patrol activities. To deal with increasing maritime crime rate this study suggest to use geographical profile method which developed early 1900s in USA. This geographical profile analyse the spatial characteristic and mapping this result. With this result potential crime zone can be predicted. One of the result is hot spot management which gives data about habitual crime zone. In Korea National Police Agency adopt this method in 2008 and apply on patrol and crime prevention activity by analysis of different criteria. Korea National Police Agency analyse the crime rate with crime type, crime zone and potential crime zone, and hourly, regionally criteria. Korea Coast Guard need to adopt this method and apply on maritime to make maritime crime map, which shows type of crime with regional, periodical result. With this geographical profiling we can set a Criminal Point which shows the place where the crime often occurs. The Criminal Points are set with the data of numerous rates such as homicide, robbery, burglary, missing, collision which happened in ocean. Set this crime as the major crime and manage the data more thoroughly. I expect to enhance the reinforcement of marine crime using this Criminal Points. Because this points will give us efficient way to prevent the maritime crime by placing the patrol vessel where they needed most.
A study on sedimentation, geochemical behavior and seismic stratigrapht of the continental shelf sediments along the Korea Strait and a part of south and southeast offshore area of the Korea Peninsula was carried out. In the inner shelf floor with depth ranging up to 80m zonal distribution patterns of mud, sandy silt, and silty sand were observed. In the outer shelf, however, coarse sandy sediments are dominant, and shills and gravels were frequently observed. These observations seem to confirm the Holocene sedimentary processes on the continental shelves off the south, south to east coasts of Korea discussed by Park (1985 and 1986) and Park and Choi (1986). The suface sediments (upper most 5cm thick)from selected 9 stations were analyzed for Al,Mn, Fe,Cr,Ni,Cu,Zn and Pb in order to study geochemical behavior of the sediments in the study area. All data were normalized to Al to com,pensate the size effect of the sediments.In general,inner shelf sediments show slight enrichment compared to the outer shelf sediments.In particular,Pb and Zn show heavy enrichment in most of the sediments.to degrees comparable to those observed at the polluted Kwangyang and Masan Bay sediments.Thus,it is considered that rapid migration or movement of fine-grained sediments in the study area does exist. Three seismic stratigraphic units were analyzed based on the seismic records.The acoustic basement the lower sedimentary deposit(B)and the upper deposit(A)were observed.The strong reflectivity R,in particular, between unit A and B is considered to be an erosinal unconformity during the last Glacial time.
On the basis of the Landsat TM scenes with 15 year's time differences, the topographic maps with 50 years differences, and the air photos with 25 years differences, we carried out the field survey for geology and forestry and analyzed the topographical change and the variation of the forest resource in Anmyundo. In terms of the discrimination of forest trees in Anmyumdo, the NDVI with larger than 0.5 in the winter season is the indicator of the surface of the pine tree land-cover. The peak values of NDVI appear on the surface of the pine aging 30 through 50 years and decrease a little and grossly stabilized over the more aging trees. The distinction of the deciduous forest and grass land from the pine tree was capable with the correlation with the abrupt seasonal variation of NDVI and the surface aspect. The great change of topography is detected in the region Changgiri due to the continuous tidal erosion since the canal construction about 370 years ago and along the all around coast of Anmyundo due to the reclamation for the paddy field. The surface area of the pine tree land-cover in Anmyundo was estimated 35.91 km$^2$ in 1986 and 33.15 km$^2$ in 1993, which is originated from the grassland development in the southeastern part of Anmyundo where the pine tree dominated by 1986. In the northen part of Anmyundo the surface area of the pine land-cover increased a little in 1993 comparing to 1986.

In this study, the soil characteristics of peat layer in Korea were analysed to predict new peat distribution areas in Taean, Chungcheongnam-do. The soil characteristics of peat distribution areas in Taean were compared with those in other areas in Korea. In Korea, peat researches were conducted in various regions, such as Taean in Chungcheongnam-do, Pyeongtaek in Gyeonggi Province, Gangneung in Gangwon-do, Ulsan, Iksan in Jeollabuk-do and Jangheung in Jeollanam-do. We summarized a) topographic distribution, b) deposition type, c) soil drainage classes, and d) soil suborder of previously studied area to determine criteria for prediction of peat distribution area. Through a case study, the type of peat layer distribution area in Taean were divided into two; (1) a) valley, b) co-alluvium, c) somewhat poorly drained, d) aqualfs and (2) a) marine plain, b) alluvium, c) very poorly drained, d) aquepts. A field survey was conducted to confirm the distribution of the actual peat layer. All peat layer were located within 10-km from the coastal line which is similar to previous studies, and the peat layer was characterized with pH 5, humic acid content of less than 15% and dark brown color. The new peat layer in Taean was deeper, thicker and less humificated than other studied areas.

In this study, GIS method has been used to get fractal characteristics. Using the projected area and surface area, 2 dimensional fractal characteristic of terrain was found out. Correlation of fractal dimension and mean slope were also checked over. Results are as below. 1) To get a fractal dimension, the method which is using the surface area is also directly proportional to complexity of the terrain as other fractal dimension. 2) Fractal dimensions using the surface area, that is proposed in this thesis are carried out as below : Uiseong : $2.02{\sim}2.15$ Yeongcheon : $2.10{\sim}2.24$. These values are in a range of fractal $2.10{\sim}2.20$ dimensions which has known. 3) Correlation of mean slope and fractal dimension is diminished about 30% in a region which is more than $25^{\circ}$ of mean slope. So, in this region using the fractal dimension method is better than using the mean slope. From this study, on formula using the projected area and surface area is still good to get a fractal dimension that has been found. But to confirm this method the region of research should be wider and be set up the correlation of mean slope, surface area and fractal dimension. It can be applicable to restoration of terrain and traffic flow analysis in the future research.

The IMO has recommended on VHF digital communications operation for sailing ships from 2017. And ships more than 5 tons is obliged to digital communications by fishing Vessels Act and Vessel Safety Act in domestic. The owner of all vessel is equipped to the automatic position reporting device in accordance with the Notice of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to regulations, It shall be ensure to navigations safety and in order to respond quickly in the event of maritime accidents on all vessels. The info-communications station of fishery is operating the automatic position reporting system using the VHF DSC in east sea from 2012, Continuously, which is underway the install plan in south sea and yellow sea. But this plan is very difficult, because of propagation environment is poor on account of complicated coastline and many islands. This paper has analyzed the propagation coverage for position setting of coast station in south sea and the traffic zone set up by compare with RSSI and methode of navigation tracking by VMS.

Coastal dunes help stabilize the coastal landscape and protect the hinterland through dynamic interaction with sand beaches. Sometimes dune erosion occurs during the tropical cyclones, while dune recovery may naturally follow after the event. As the typhoon Kompasu passed through the Korean Peninsula early-September in 2010, it caused a rise in water in association with the storm, wave run-ups, and heavy rains in coastal areas. As the result, coastal dunes along the west coast of Korea were severely damaged during the storm. However, the degree and extent of erosion and recovery of dunes were found to be related with the condition of beach-dune systems including gradients of foreshore and front slope of the dune, sediment supply, vegetation, wind activity, and human interferences. Some dunes retreated landward more and more after the erosional event, while others recovered its original profile by aeolian transport processes mainly during the winter season. Vegetated dunes with pine trees were less recovered after the erosion than grass-covered dunes. In addition, dunes with artificial defense were more eroded and less recovered than those without hard constructions. According to the observation after the severe storm, it is likely that the sand transport process is critical to the dune recovery. Therefore, the interactions between beach and dune must be properly evaluated from a geomorphological perspective for the effective management of coastal dunes, including natural recovery after the erosion by storm events.

In this study, the past erosion history and current status in the CHUNG-UI beach of Eulwang-dong, Jung-gu, Incheon-Si, South Korea were investigated and analyzed the wave with wave-induced current to investigate the causes of coastal erosion. As a result, the significant wave height ($H_{1/3}$) was in the range of 0.07~1.57 m and the mean value was 0.21 m. The maximum wave height ($H_{max}$) was in the range of 0.02-4.76m and the mean value was 0.27m. The vertical wave height and cycles were estimated through numerical model experiments of wave transformation. The 50-year frequency design wave height ranged from 0.82m to 3.75m. As a result of the experiment of wave-induced current, wave-induced current in the CHUNG-UI beach was decreased after the installation of the Detached breakwater and the Jetty. On the other hand, when the crest elevation was increased up to 5 m, there was no significant change, but when the crest elevation was increased to 8m, strong wave-induced current occurred around the submerged breakwaters due to lowered depth of water. In addition, the main erosion of the CHUNG-UI beach is due to the intensive invasion of the wave characteristics coming from the outer sea into the white sandy beach. The deformation of the wave centered on the front of the sandy beach caused additional longshore currents flowing parallel to the sandy beach and rip currents in the transverse direction, thus confirming that the longshore sediment was moved out of the front and out of the sea. The results of this study can be used as preliminary data for the recovery of the sand and the selection of efficient erosion prevention facilities.
In this study, ship movement simulation was performed based on a marine physics model for the ancient port presumed under the past environmental conditions in the coastal area of Hwaseong, which played an important role as a center of trade in the Three Kingdoms and Unified Silla periods. The paleo topographical surface was reconstructed through the analysis of borehole sediments, and the paleo coastline was extracted through the geomorphological maps published during before independence. Based on the established paleo environmental conditions of the Hwaseong coast, the marine physics model (FVCOM) was used to simulate the flow of surface currents and the route of floating materials assumed to be ancient ships. As a result, the processes of moving ships from the port to the open sea in the Eunsupo area, which is estimated location of the ancient port related to Dangseong, was well simulated, and thus the reliability of the location of the ancient port estimated by the scientific method was secured. This study is significant as a result of convergence research that encompasses archeology, history, geomorpology, geology, and oceanography.
