  • To investigate the reinforcing effect of subsurface layers of marine dredged clay(DMC) mixed with the micro-fiber(MF), a series of laboratory tests were performed on the DMC specimens with and without MF through uniaxial and triaxial compression tests. For the test programme, the elapsed time after dredging of marine clay, mixing rate and length of MF, and curing time of the composite were chosen as the important factors affecting the strength behaviour. The strength of the DMC mixed with MF and waste lime(WL) used for the admixture was found to be enhanced with the increasing content and length of MF, and with decreasing water content of DMC. MF and WL were applied as materials for trafficability improvement of the very soft reclaimed ground by DMC.

  • In this research, settling tests with marine clays in Korea and extensive literature review were performed to investigate the characteristics of sedimentation and consolidation so that their behaviors during dredging and reclamating could be evaluated. Design parameters related to Yano's method (1985), one of experimental approaches having been used widely in Korea to estimate sedimentation and consolidation, were analyzed and their proprieties were reassessed. For samples from four different sites of south and west coasts in Korea respectively, settling tests with 1m height of columns were carried out, changing initial water content and height of sample in order to evaluate settling and consolidation characteristics of them from analyzing test results. More reliable regression curves than values from literature review were obtained as analyzing test results of estimating coefficient of sedimentation/ consolidation and initial setting velocity with changing initial water content. Relation between height of soil solid and surface height of slurry at the stages of initiation and termination of consolidation was also assessed. Finally, for marine clays of south and west coasts of Korea, ranges and average values of these design parameters were evaluated and typical empirical equations between these design parameters were also proposed. On the other hand, comparisons of characteristics of sedimentation and consolidation between marine clays from south coast and them from west coast were also performed.

  • In land reclamation construction using marine clay, a measure of material function, that is, the relation between void ratio-effective stress and permeability, is very important aspect for the prediction of self-weight consolidation behavior. But reclaimed ground has very high water content, so there are many difficulties in the laboratory test for measuring material function. For this reason, some researches are carried out using slurry cconsolidometr to measure material function. In this study, material function was measured using slurry consolidometer, and to overcome the shortcoming of researches using slurry cosolidometer, an equation for the prediction of material function was proposed on the basis of column test's parameter. Material function was determined through low stress consolidation test and permeability test, and it also was calculated with the equation using column test parameter. The continuity of material function could be confirmed through these tests. Material function is easily determined with the equation proposed in this study, and can be used for the prediction of self-weight consolidation behavior.

  • Sedimentation and self-weight consolidation tests in cylinder and large model tank and field measurement such as settlement and pore water pressure at each layer by wireless automatic instrumentation system were carried out to investigate the behaviour of dredged marine clay fill. The consolidation behaviour for each reclaimed layer was analyzed from these measured data and numerical analysis result using finite strain consolidation theory. It was fond from this study that the consolidation behaviour of dredged clay fill is heavily dependent on the filling process.

  • An experimental study has been carried out to investigate the reinforcing effect of marine dredging clay(MDC) mixed with the Micro-Fiber(MF). A series of laboratory tests was performed using specimens of MDC alone and MDC with MF by means of uniaxial and triaxial compression test. In the test programme, three stages of water content of MDC were chosen according to the elapsed time after dredging, and content and length of MF were considered as important factors for reinforcing effect. And the developed strength due to curing was measured both in MDC and composite. The enhancement of strength of composite was found to be increased with the increasing content and length of MF, and curing time, and with decreasing water content of MDC. An additional study has been made for in-situ trafficability on the soft reclaimed ground by MDC due to high water content. It was found that the waste lime was to be applicable for this purpose to get a reinforcing effect of MDC. A further study would lead to the better understanding of the reinforcing mechanism of the composite.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the pressuremeter test result and analysis for Yulchon Combined Cycle Power Plant(CCPP) site. The CCPP site is old backfill area with the hillcut materials obtained from the borrow sources near the mountains. The geology of this area consists of 6-layers from the ground level such as hillcut material, dredged clay fill, silty sand, original marine clay, weathered rock, soft rock, etc.. The pressuremeter test has been carried out with three different probe, in size and membrane type for all layers except the clay layers. The cone penetration test has been also carried out to collaborate with the pressuremeter test in the hillcut material layer.

  • Marine clays are widely distributed in Korean eastern, western and southern coastal areas. Understanding engineering characteristics of the soft ground is very important, whenever civil structures are constructed in those coastal areas. It is because the ground is composed of highly compressible marine clay. In this paper, the physical and compression characteristics of Incheon, Mokpo, Gwangyang and Busan marine clay were analyzed and the characteristics between western and southern coastal marine clays were compared. For this, test results of 1,471 samples from 114 sites were used. As a result, Incheon clay showed the lowest plasticity and the highest unit weight due to influx of silt from the Yellow River and the turn of the tide of Incheon area. However, Gwangyang clay showed highly compressible characteristic due to extensive reclamation. On the other hand, Mokpo and Busan clay showed partially similar levels of characteristics. The compression index of Mokpo and Busan clay was high more than twice in comparison with Incheon clay and that of Gwangyang clay was higher than seventy percents in comparison with Mokpo and Busan clay.

  • Recently, there have been various domestic construction activities related to the reclamation of the dredged soils to expand the land use. However, the reclaimed grounds made of the dredged soils cause various problems due to highly compressible and low shear strength nature. Particularly, this nature induces huge problems in case of the harbor facilities and road construction on the reclaimed sites. Furthermore, in the reclamation activities, the marine dredged soils are often used instead of the well sorted sand, which induces problems of compressibilities. Therefore, in this study, the mechanical characteristics of artificial soil mixture of kaolinite representing the marine dredged soils and the pond ash. A large consolidometer is designed and manufactured to produce the artificial soil mixture. To represent various mixing ratio between the fly ash and bottom ash in the pond ash, six samples with the same stress history are made with different mixing ratio among kaolinite, bottom ash and fly ash. Isotropically consolidated and undrained compression tests are performed to investigate the shear characteristics of soil mixtures. Based on the experimental results, as the components of mixed ash increase, the friction angle increase and the cohesion values decrease. Also, the porepressure parameters at failure, Af increase with the mixing components of the pond ash. The portion of bottom ash has more impact on the shear behavior than that of fly ash.

  • For a massive project related to building national industrial complexes on a soft ground applied to PVD after dredging and hydraulic fill, laboratory tests were carried out using undisturbed sample taken from various depth. Piezocone penetration and dissipation tests were carried out to assess horizontal coefficient of consolidation and initial stress in field. The ground consists of upper dredged fill and lower original clay layer having both similar marine clays. It should be, however, considered as multi-layered soft ground having different initial void ratio, initial water content, initial effective stress, and permeability and compressibility with directions. To assess initial stress of those soft layers in which have different stress history related to consolidation, CPTu test results, especially excess pore water pressure, were analyzed. It allows to find out distribution of excess pore water pressure and initial stress inner original clay layer.

  • The single regression method was used to analyze the correlationship between the compression index with mechanical properties for reclaimed marine clays in the Gyeonggi coast of Korea. As results of performing regression analysis for 62 samples about reclaimed marine clays in the Gyeonggi coast of Korea, linear regression lines between compression index and natural water content, void ratio in situ, and liquid limit respectively were obtained. The changed properties of reclaimed soil due to disturbance during dredging and reclaiming could be investigated by comparing with the existing empirical correlation equations for the original ground where dredging was performed.
