The single regression method was used to analyze the correlationship between the compression index with mechanical properties for reclaimed marine clays in the Gyeonggi coast of Korea. As results of performing regression analysis for 62 samples about reclaimed marine clays in the Gyeonggi coast of Korea, linear regression lines between compression index and natural water content, void ratio in situ, and liquid limit respectively were obtained. The changed properties of reclaimed soil due to disturbance during dredging and reclaiming could be investigated by comparing with the existing empirical correlation equations for the original ground where dredging was performed.
Recently, as large constructions on the coast increase, an application of a surface layer stabilization method which is one of the improvement methods for dredged soft clay has increased. However, there are few studies about this. The purpose of this study is clarifying characteristics of ultra-soft marine clay and hardening agent. Also, it is verifying an optimal mixture ratio of hardening agent through the laboratory tests according to designed experiments and proving by statistical analysis and pilot tests. Laboratory tests were performed with proper hardening agent and test soil in accordance with the design of experiments. Regression equations between hardening agents materials and unconfined compressive strength were derived from the tests. The applicability of regression equations were also verified by pilot tests. From the test results, it was found that hardening agent materials(cement, slag, fly-ash, inorganic salts, arwin, gypsum etc.) have some effect upon compressive strength. The optimal mixture ratio which satisfies the required compressive strength was derived from the statistical analysis. The effect of ground improvement by cements and hardening agents was confirmed through the pilot tests. This study will suggest data for design or construction criteria of stabilization of surface layer on ultra-soft marine clay.
The physical characteristics of the marine clay in the Korean Peninsula, specifically Pusan areas of the south coast of Korea, were previously studied and reliable data from harbor construction projects were used for the relationship analysis of geotechnical strength parameters. The sample of marine clay classified to ML, MH, CL, CH and ML-CL from USCS were included for the analysis while the samples classified to SC were excluded in order to raise the degree of data analysis. Geotechnical strength properties, such as undrained shear strength, sensitivity ratio, and effective friction angle were analyzed and evaluated using the data obtained from unconfined compression test, triaxial compression test and field vane test. Abnormal values were extracted through statistical analysis. Moreover, the reliability of the results was improved by performing the evaluation of disturbance. Linear regression analysis was used for the relationship analysis, between undrained shear strength and depth. The relationship equation between undrained shear strength and depth was derived from the analysis of unconfined and triaxial compression test data of samples obtained at same location. Consequently, The relationship between depth and undrained shear strength is $S_u=0.015148D+0.04624$ and the undrained shear strength derived from the triaxial compression test was estimated to be about 1.26 of derived from the unconfined compression test.
In this study, the infiltration quantity of fine-grained soil into coarse-grained soil or aggregate for methods to accelerate consolidation drainage is checked by laboratory tests under various conditions and those characteristics on infiltration are examined closely. Irrespectively of pressures to fine-grained soil corresponding to stresses in a soil mass or moisture contents of fine-grained soil, fine-grained soil does not infiltrate into standard sand and marine sand, so it is verified that drain-resistance into sand mass of drainage / pile does not occur entirely and its shear strength would increase highly by water compaction. It is known that the infiltration depth of fine-grained soil into aggregate increases according that those size is larger in case of aggregates and it increases according that the pressure or the moisture contents is higher in case of same size aggregate. It is thought that drain-resistance into aggregate mass of drainage / pile would occurs by infiltrated fine-grained soil in advance though the infiltration depth of fine-grained soi of lower moisture content than liquid limit into 13 mm aggregate is low quietly. So gravel drain method or gravel compaction pile method, etc. using aggregate of gravels or crushed stones, etc. larger than sand particle size should be not applied in very soft fine-grained soil mass of higher natural moisture contents than liquid limit, and it is thought that its applying is not nearly efficient also in soft fine-grained soil mass of lower natural moisture contents than liquid limit.

For a massive project related to building national industrial complexes on a soft ground applied to PVD after dredging and hydraulic fill, laboratory tests were carried out using undisturbed sample taken from various depth. Piezocone penetration and dissipation tests were carried out to assess horizontal coefficient of consolidation and initial stress in field. The ground consists of upper dredged fill and lower original clay layer having both similar marine clays. It should be, however, considered as multi-layered soft ground having different initial void ratio, initial water content, initial effective stress, and permeability and compressibility with directions. To assess initial stress of those soft layers in which have different stress history related to consolidation, CPTu test results, especially excess pore water pressure, were analyzed. It allows to find out distribution of excess pore water pressure and initial stress inner original clay layer.
Normally consolidated and slightly overconsolidated soft clay layer is widely distributed in the south coast of Korea. To ensure the efficient and economical construction design of any structure to be built on this soft soil, exhaustive studies related to geotechnical and physical engineering properties are required. In this study, the relationship of the physical properties of southern Gwangyang marine clay in the Korea Peninsula were examined, including natural water content, specific gravity, total unit weight, initial void ratio, liquid limit, plastic limit, and physical properties of activity and soil parameters. For the parameter relationship analysis, the latest relatively reliable data on the large harbor construction work were used, optimum values were deducted with linear regression and non-linear regression between soil parameters, water content or initial void ratio appears to be very large. Moreover, in the linear and involution pattern regression, equal coefficient of determination appeared. The relationship of the different parameters was shown to be excellent in the non-linear regression of involution equation and exponential equation pattern compared with the findings of linear regression analysis.
The permeability coefficient is one of the fundamental engineering properties of soft clays. Consolidation process as well as migration of pollutants in soil are affected the permeability coefficient, which generally decreases with the reduction in void ratio during consolidation. After Kozeny(1927) and Carman(1956), many researchers have proposed the relationships between void ratio and permeability in such forms as; (1) log e - log k(1+e), (2) e - log k, or (3) log e - log k. Constant rate of strain (CRS) tests was performed with undisturbed samples obtained at Kunsan and Kimhae deposits, which are representative Korean marine clay. From the results of the tests, the relationships were found valid for Kunsan and Kimhae clays. The experimental correlation $C_k=0.5e_o$ was satisfied with Kimhae clay but not with Kunsan clay.
In this study, a subjective weighting factors were awarded based on some indication of the difficulty of assessing the preconsolidation stress using traditional methods (Casagrande, Onitsuka et al., Silva, Becker et al., Janbu and Karlsrud methods) such as those proposed by Casagrande and Janbu using undisturbed sample obtained from Gwangyang dredged clay with high plasticity located in the southern area of Korean peninsular. These numbers only assess the relative ease of finding preconsolidation stress and say nothing regarding the accuracy of the value. The data were compared with measurements of undrained shear strength using strength incremental ratio, checking where or not the values are in the range of 0.25 to 0.35 (typical values of Korean marine clay) and analyzing standard deviation(degree of variability). The measurements of undrained shear strength were obtained from unconfined compression tests (UCT). When determining preconsolidation stress of Korean marine clay, at first, the work method proposed by Becker et al. and the bilogarithmic method proposed by Onitsuka et al. should be used. In addition, preconsolidation pressure should be estimated using the traditional Casagrande method as a basic of comparison.
Estimation of undrained shear strength $(S_u)$ of clayey soils from piezocone penetration test (CPTu), which has widely been known as one of very promising in situ test methods, requires piezocone factors. Empirical correlations are generally utilized to derive piezocone factors, but previous studies on the empirical piezocone factors are site-specific and in some cases need engineering characteristics, which should be obtained from additional laboratory tests. In this study, empirical cone factors were evaluated by comparing 6 CPTu results at Shihwa region in Korea with reference $S_u$ values obtained from field vane test (FVT). From previous CPTu results of other regions in Korea as well as the results herein, the correlations between piezocone factor, $N_{kT}$ and CPTu results were investigated and three simplified evaluation methods of $S_u$ using only CPTu results were presented. The $S_u$ values estimated by $(q_T-{\sigma}_v)/{\sigma}'_v$ method shows better matches with those obtained from laboratory tests for marine clays at Shihwa region.
The purpose of this paper is to present the pressuremeter test result and analysis for Yulchon Combined Cycle Power Plant(CCPP) site. The CCPP site is old backfill area with the hillcut materials obtained from the borrow sources near the mountains. The geology of this area consists of 6-layers from the ground level such as hillcut material, dredged clay fill, silty sand, original marine clay, weathered rock, soft rock, etc.. The pressuremeter test has been carried out with three different probe, in size and membrane type for all layers except the clay layers. The cone penetration test has been also carried out to collaborate with the pressuremeter test in the hillcut material layer.
