This research presents a new maintenance planning method for deteriorating bridges considering simultaneously the minimization of the maintenance cost and maximization of the bridge performance. Optimal maintenance planning is formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem that treats the maintenance cost as well as the bridge performance such as the condition grade of the bridge deck, girder and pier. To effectively address the multi-objective optimization problem and decision making process for the obtained solution set, we apply a genetic algorithm as a numerical searching technique and adopt a preference-based optimization method. A numerical example for a typical 5-span prestressed concrete girder bridge shows that the maintenance cost and the performance of the bridge can be balanced reasonably without severe trade-offs between each objectives.

In this study, a smart sky-bridge composed of MR damper and FPS has been proposed and vibration control performance of a smart sky-bridge for the connected buildings was investigated. To this end, 10-story and 20-story building structures connected by a smart sky-bridge were selected as example structures and El Centro and Kobe earthquakes, which have near and far fault ground motion characteristics respectively, were used for time history analyses. In order to effectively control the smart sky-bridge, fuzzy logic controller was developed and multi-objective genetic algorithm was used to optimize fuzzy logic controllers. Based on optimization results, it has been seen that there is a trade-off between seismic responses of 10-story and 20-story buildings and a suite of Pareto optimal solutions of fuzzy logic controllers for seismic response control can be obtained by multi-objective genetic algorithm. It is shown from numerical study that seismic responses of adjacent buildings can be efficiently controlled by using a smart sky-bridge.

In the present study, we proposed a numerical method for simulating thermally induced fracture slip using a grain-based distinct element model (GBDEM). As a part of DECOVALEX-2023, the thermo-mechanical loading test on a saw-cut rock fracture conducted at the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology was simulated. In the numerical model, the rock sample including a saw-cut fracture was represented as a group of random Voronoi polyhedra. Then, the coupled thermo-mechanical behavior of grains and their interfaces was calculated using 3DEC. The key concerns focused on the temperature evolution, thermally induced principal stress increment, and fracture normal and shear displacements under thermo-mechanical loading. The comparisons between laboratory experimental results and the numerical results revealed that the numerical model reasonably captured the heat transfer and heat loss characteristics of the rock specimen, the horizontal stress increment due to constrained displacement, and the progressive shear failure of the fracture. However, the onset of the fracture slip and the magnitudes of stress increment and fracture displacement showed discrepancies between the numerical and experimental results. We expect the numerical model to be enhanced by continuing collaboration and interaction with other research teams of DECOVALEX-2023 Task G and validated in further study.

A numerical method is developed to solve a two-dimensional diffraction problem for a body located in a sediment pocket where a heavier muddy water is trapped. In the present study, the wave exciting forces acting on a submerged body in the water-sediment interface by an incident wave is investigate. It is assumed that the heavier mud is trapped locally in a sediment pocket. A mathematical formulation is made in the scope of the potential theory. The fluid is assumed to be inviscid, incompressible and its motion irrotational. The boundary conditions on the unknown free surface and interface are linearized. As a method of solution, the localized finite-element method is adopted. In the method, the computation domain is reduced by utilizing the complete set of analytic solutions known in the infinite subdomain to be truncated by introduction of an appropriate juncture conditions. The main advantage of this method is that any complex geometry of the boundaries can be easily accommodated. Computations are carried out for mono-chromatic plane progressive surface waves normally incident on the domain. Numerical results are compared with those obtained by Lassiter based on Schwingers variational method. Good Agreements are obtained in general. Another numerical computations are made for the cases with and without a body in the sediment pocket.

In this study, to examine the effect of a hole size change(smaller hole diameter) in the outer region of the lower-support-structure-bottom plate(LSSBP) on the reactor core-inlet flow-distribution, simulations were conducted with the commercial CFD software, ANSYS CFX R.15. The predicted results were compared with those of the original LSSBP. Through these comparisons, it was concluded that a more uniform distribution of the mass flow rate at the core-inlet plane could be obtained by reducing the hole size in the outer region of the LSSBP. Therefore, from the nuclear regulatory perspective, design change of the hole pattern in the outer region of the LSSBP may be desirable in terms of improving both the mechanical integrity of the fuel assembly and the core thermal margin.
In this study, basic data that can be referenced for ventilation modeling was presented by analyzing the characteristics of wind pressure coefficients(Cp) according to wind direction angles under conditions of different building layouts and aspect ratios through CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis for flat-type apartment complexes. In the case of a wind direction angle of 0°, Cp distribution in the form of an inverted S-shape was shown on the front of the building located on the windward side. And Cp corresponding to the lowest floor, the uppermost floor, and the two inflection points showed relatively close values regardless of the height of the building. The inflection point of the low-rise part was formed at a height of about 11m, and the height of the high-rise part could be calculated through a trend formula proportional to the height of the building. It was confirmed that the averaged Cp value can be applied in most conditions except for the wind direction angle of 45 degrees.

In this study, we introduce a concept of advanced neurofuzzy polynomial networks(ANFPN), a hybrid modeling architecture combining neurofuzzy networks(NFN) and polynomial neural networks(PNN). These networks are highly nonlinear rule-based models. The development of the ANFPN dwells on the technologies of Computational Intelligence(Cl), namely fuzzy sets, neural networks and genetic algorithms. NFN contributes to the formation of the premise part of the rule-based structure of the ANFPN. The consequence part of the ANFPN is designed using PNN. At the premise part of the ANFPN, NFN uses both the simplified fuzzy inference and error back-propagation learning rule. The parameters of the membership functions, learning rates and momentum coefficients are adjusted with the use of genetic optimization. As the consequence structure of ANFPN, PNN is a flexible network architecture whose structure(topology) is developed through learning. In particular, the number of layers and nodes of the PNN are not fixed in advance but is generated in a dynamic way. In this study, we introduce two kinds of ANFPN architectures, namely the basic and the modified one. Here the basic and the modified architecture depend on the number of input variables and the order of polynomial in each layer of PNN structure. Owing to the specific features of two combined architectures, it is possible to consider the nonlinear characteristics of process system and to obtain the better output performance with superb predictive ability. The availability and feasibility of the ANFPN are discussed and illustrated with the aid of two representative numerical examples. The results show that the proposed ANFPN can produce the model with higher accuracy and predictive ability than any other method presented previously.
Recently, steel casing became an interesting issue when applying controlled-source electromagnetic (EM) method to various fields because effects of steel casing on EM responses are not negligible. This study employed an approach that approximates the steel casing as a series of electric dipole sources in order to develop the numerical algorithm for the efficient simulation of EM responses in the presence of steel casing. After verifying the validity of the developed algorithm, we analyze effects of steel casing on EM responses with the synthetic model simulating geothermal reservoir environment. The analysis showed that the effects of steel casing on EM responses are localized near the casing and increase as the transmitter becomes close to the casing. In addition, through the analysis on the EM responses by the injection of clean water, we confirm that the effects of casing are negligible when interpreting the after-injection data acquired using the transmitter located far enough from the casing. Considering the difference in EM responses between before and after injection in inversion, the effects of the casing can be neglected although after-injection data shows considerable difference due to the close distance between the transmitter and casing. To investigate this kind steel casing effect, the precise analysis on EM responses should be preceded. The algorithm introduced in this study will contribute to the reliable calculations of EM responses distorted by the conductive steel casing.
