  • In order to analyze collapse behavior of structure containing irregular and large displacement, many numerical analyses have been conducted. In this study, using a new method, Applied Element Method (AEM) for collapse analysis of structures, collapse behavior of model RC structures Is simulated. From these simulations results, displacement of X-direction (or horizontal) and displacement of Y-direction (or vertical) is similar to that of mode) RC structures. It is confirmed that collapse behavior of structures using AEN is reliable accurately simulated with that of model RC structures.

  • The present study aims to numerically investigate the behavior of liquid droplet driven by capillarity force imbalance on horizontal surfaces ranging from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, under various conditions. The droplet behavior has been simulated using an in-house solution code(PowerCFD), which employs an unstructured cell-centered method based on a conservative pressure-based finite-volume method with interface capturing method(CICSAM) in a volume of fluid(VOF) scheme for phase interface capturing. The detailed droplet behavior was obtained under various conditions for droplets with different initial shapes, contact angles and surface tension forces(or Bond number). The mechanism of droplet transport was examined using the numerical results on the droplet shapes.

  • This paper presents an analytical method considering tensile strength enhancement in hybrid $Al_2O_3$ fiber/particle/aluminum composites(MMCs). The tensile strength and elastic modulus of the hybrid MMCs are even 20% higher than those of the fiber reinforced MMCs with same volume fraction of reinforcements. This phenomenon is explained by the cluster model which is newly proposed in this research, and the strengthening mechanisms by a cluster is analyzed using simple modified rule of mixtures. From the analysis, it is observed that cluster structure in hybrid MMCs increase the fiber efficiency factor for the tensile strength and the orientation factor for the elastic modulus. The present theory is then compared with experimental results which was performed using squeeze infiltrated hybrid MMCs made of hybrid $Al_2O_3$ short fiber/particle preform and AC8A alloy as base metal, and the agreement is found to be satisfactory.

  • Concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) columns are becoming popular in structural applications. The increased popularity comes from their excellent structural properties such as high strength, high ductility, and large energy absorption capacity. However, the disadvantage feature of CFT column is the difficulty in predicting its time dependant characteristic (i.e., creep and shrinkage) of inner concrete. The time dependent behavior of CFT column can cause serious serviceability problems. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the long term behavior of CFT column. This paper presents analytical and experimental studies on long-term behavior of CFT-column under a central axial loading. Two loading cases are considered in the research; (1) the load applied only at the inner core concrete of CFT-column and (2) the load applied simultaneously on both concrete and steel tube. Analysis method using the bond strength model is proposed and conclusions on long-term properties of CFT-column can be derived from the results.

  • In the machining processes, the tool chipping are known to be the most dangerous when the variation of end of tool edges is largest. Therefore, chipping has been caused by the stress distribution in the moment of cutting. In this study, in order to predict the shapes of tool chipping with the tool shapes and the cutting conditions, the premier chipping shapes of involute cutter iss predicted by the stress distribution value of cutting edges and it is verified by the experiments. The growth behavior of the tool chipping is considered through the experiment of gear cutting and in case of evaluation of specific cutting energy in the proper machining conditions through the simulation result, it can be known that the prediction of cutting force is possible accurately.

  • Filament wound structures such as pressure tanks, pipes and motor cases of rockets are widely used in the aerospace application. The determination of a proper winding angle and thickness is very important to decrease manufacturing difficulties and to increase structural efficiency. In this study, possible winding angles considering the slippage between a fiber and a mandrel surface are calculated using the semi-geodesic path equation. In addition, finite element analysis using ABAcUS are performed to predict the behavior of filament wound structures considering continuous change of winding angle along the dome part. The water-pressuring tests of 3rd stage motor case are performed to verify the analysis procedure. The strain gages are attached on the surface in the fiber direction. Progressive failure analysis is performed to predict the burst pressure and the weakest region of the motor case. The effect of reinforcement is also studied to increase its performance.

  • A dynamic model for the pollutant transport analysis in a river is developed by preissmann scheme and lagrangian method considering tidal effects. A generalized Lagranian model alleviate the numerical difficulties associated with the use of the Eulerian reference frame. Comparing the finite difference and finite element solutions of one-dimensional transport equation, Lagrangian model shows the most stable and accurate results. The flow model is calibrated using the recorded flood data in the downstream of the Han River. The particle paths-of-travel is computed by the model for the various low flow conditions. The model will provide operational informations useful for water quality management in the downstream of the Han River.

  • The impact-echo test, which is to evaluate the integrity of concrete and masonry structures nondestructively, is an excellent method in the practical application. However, there are cases that the Impact-Echo testing nay result in the low reliability. In this study, the reliability of the Impact-Echo testing was investigated through the numerical simulation of the Impact-Echo testing. The finite element analysis and the analysis based on the dynamic stiffness matrix method was incorporated for the numerical simulation, in which the cases of a sandwiched shear stiffness, an incr+easing or decreasing stiffness, and a homogeneous stiffness. Based on the results of the analysis were considered, this study proposed the approaches to Improve the reliability of the Impact-Echo testing.

  • This paper deals tilth an efficient algorithm in spectral fatigue analysis of ship structures. The concept of stress influence coefficients is suggested in order to obtain stress transfer functions efficiently which are the structural responses for unit load components. Strip method is applied to obtain the motion response and pressure distributions exerted on the hull. Since a number of the structural analysis should be performed for the various wave frequencies and heading angles in the spectral analysis, the algorithm developed in this study improves the efficiency of the analysis. Finally, the calculation example with application to this concept is shown in this paper.
