  • In this paper, a commercial phosphorescent white light-emitting diode (WLED) visible light communication (VLC) system with an equalization circuit to achieve the high modulation bandwidth was designed and demonstrated. An analytical method to examine the performance of the equalizer was carried out using a general circuit-simulator, PSpice. The equalization circuit was composed of two passive filters with resisters and a capacitor and an active filter with an op-amp. Utilizing our post-equalization technology, the ~3.5 MHz bandwidth of phosphor WLED could be extended to ~25 MHz without using an optical blue-filter. In this VLC system with a single round-type WLED and a single PIN photo-diode, ASK data transmission up to 35 Mbps at a 1m free space distance was obtained. The resulting bit-error-rate was $7.6{\times}10^{-4}$, which is less than the forward error correction (FEC) limit of $3.8{\times}10^{-3}$.

  • MR acoustic sound or noise due to gradient pulsings has been one of the problems in MRI, both in patient scanning as well as in many areas of psychiatric and neuroscience research, such as brain fMRI. Especially in brain fMRI, sound noise is one of the serious noise sources which obscures the small signals obtainable from the subtle changes occurring in oxygenation status in the cortex and blood capillaries. Therfore, we have studied the effects of acoustic or sound noise arising in fMR imaging of the auditory, motor and visual cortices. The results show that the acoustical noise effects on motor and visual responses are opposite. That is, for the motor activity, it shows an increased total motor activation while for the visual stimulation, corresponding(visual) cortical activity has diminished substantially when the subject is exposed to a loud acoustic sound. Although the current observations are preliminary and require more experimental confirmation, it appears that the observed acoustic-noise effects on brain functions, such as in the motor and visual cortices, are new observations and could have significant consequences in data observation and interpretation in future fMRI studies.

  • This paper describes the azimuth accuracy test of phase comparison direction finding method using F-16 fighter scale-down model. When the antennas are placed on the bottom of a fighter, reflection signals caused by an aircraft structure arises and an azimuth error occurs. In this research, the F-16 fighter scale-down model was made to 5:1, and five antennas were placed on the bottom of the model, then the radio waves of emitters were received by the antennas in the $0-360^{\circ}$ azimuth angles. The accuracy test was performed by numerically analyzing the phases of the radio waves received by the five antennas. The azimuth error of the phase comparison direction finding with scale-down model was measured to be less than $0.5^{\circ}$ when the signal noise ratio was larger then 0dB, and it could be very useful for the design of the phase comparison direction finding method of the fighter.

  • We investigated analytically and numerically the occurrence of modulation instability in fibers with periodic changes both in dispersion and gain. Previously, it has been known that the modulation instability is suppressed in dispersion managed solitons where dispersion is managed in such a way that the local dispersion alternates between the normal and the anomalous regimes. In this work, we enhanced the advantage of the dispersion management scheme by additionally introducing proper gain/loss profiles in fibers. The gain/loss profile is given by $\Gamma(z)=0.5/D(z)*(dD/dz)$, where D(z) represents the dispersion profile. The fundamental gain spectra of the modulation instability in the dispersion and gain managed fibers have been derived analytically and confirmed by numerical calculation. Our investigation reveals that in the dispersion and gain fibers the modulation instabilities are always much more suppressed compared to the case with only dispersion managed. In practical dispersion management schemes, dispersion profiles show discontinuity. and thus. the corresponding gain/loss profiles tend to be finite. In these cases, the gain/loss profiles were approximated by lumped gains/losses of finite values. Our numerical calculations confirm that this approximation also works well.

  • Linear GMR isolator which is profitable for transmitting analog signal was modeled and the output voltage and current in relation to the input current were investigated. GMR isolator modeling was divided into two parts, namely magnetic and electric parts. The flow chart of the modeling was drawn in which the MR curve of the spin valves were incorporated to obtain the electrical voltage output. For magnetic modeling, 3-dimensional model of planar coil was analyzed by FEM method to obtain the magnetic field strength corresponding to the input current. Coil efficiency of the planar coil having magnetic core layer was shown to have about 1.5 times larger than that of the coil without the magnetic core layer. The feedback coil current(output current) corresponding to the input coil current was calculated to be within ${\pm}$0.25 mA of the linear fitting function of I$\_$out/= I$\_$in/-5 mA. Also, the response time and output waveforms were obtained when the coil current was a rectangular waveform. The rise time and fall time was 6 ${\mu}\textrm{s}$, respectively when the slew rate of the op-amp was 0.3 V/${\mu}\textrm{s}$.

  • Microwave characteristics of ridge type CPW traveling-wave(TW) electroabsorption modulator and photodetector are affected by the thickness of intrinsic layer, width of guiding layer, and the separation of signal and ground electrodes. These factors are determined effective index of microwave and characteristic impedance due to changing of capacitance(C) and inductance(L) of device. However, conventional equivalent circuit of TW-structure is approximated to microstrip and CPW transmission line by distribution of electric and magnetic fields, respectively. In this paper, we analyzed microwave characteristics of TW-structure and found more accurate value of C and L by using finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. These values are adopted circuit element of equivalent circuit. Microwave characteristics obtained by the FDTD and equivalent circuit model show good agreement.

  • A cross-shaped microstripline-fed printed slot antenna having wide bandwidth Is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna is analyzed by using the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method. It was found that the bandwidth of the antenna depends highly on the length of the horizontal and vertical feedline as well as the offset position of the feedline. The maximum bandwidth of this antenna is from 1.975 GHz to 4.725 GHz, which is approximately 1.3 octave, for the VSWR $\leq$ 2. Experimental data for the return loss and the radiation pattern of the antenna are also presented. and they are in good agreement with the FDTD results.e FDTD results.

  • Airborne transient electromagnetic (ATEM) surveying was introduced several decades ago in the mining industry to detect shallow conductive targets. However, conventional ATEM systems have limited depth of investigation because of weak signal strength. Recently, the grounded electrical source airborne transient electromagnetic (GREATEM) system was proposed to increase the depth of investigation. The GREATEM is a semi-airborne transient electromagnetic system because a long grounded wire is used as the transmitter. Traditionally, ATEM sounding data have been interpreted with 1D earth models to save the computing time because modern ATEM systems generally collect large data sets. However, the GREATEM 1D modeling requires numerical integration along the wire, so it takes much more time than the 1D modeling of conventional ATEM. In this study, the adaptive Born forward mapping (ABFM) was applied to the ATEM 1D modeling because the ABFM is incommensurably faster than the ordinary GREATEM 1D modeling. Comparing the results from ordinary and ABFM 1D modeling, it was confirmed that the ABFM can be applied to the 1D modeling of GEATEM.

  • To get the spatial feature of arterial pulse, we designed spatial pulse diagnostic apparatus (SPDA) using a 2-dimensional magnetoresistive sensor array. The magnetic field distribution fur magnet may was simulated using finite element method. We recognized that the field distribution of parallel magnet mays was more sensitive and uniformed than that of perpendicular one. Also the spatial displacements of magnet array were agreed with the output signal of magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) sensor array.

  • The wheel load distribution width for lane load is not specified in current Korea bridge design code(KD code), not like in current AASHTO and AASHTO LRFD specifications which specity it as twice of wheel load distribution width for wheel load. In this study, the wheel load distribution width in continuous reinforced concrete slab bridge is investigated. The major variables affecting the wheel load distribution of a reinforced concrete continuous slab bridge are the span length, bridge width, existence edge beam and boundary condition. From a series of comprehensive parametric study on each variable, the formula for wheel load distribution in continuous reinforced concrete slab bridge is proposed from the nonlinear regression analysis of finite element analysis results. The proposed formulas can be used efficiently in the accurate design of continuous reinforced concrete slab bridges.
