  • This research has focused on comparing the capacity predicted by the theoretical formula with the one measured by field load tests to examine characteristics of the bearing capacity of a helical pile. The helical pile is featured by a central shaft with one or more helical-shaped bearing plates. Being established by a small rotary attached to an excavator that applies toque, the helical piles can be readily constructed at narrow sites, especially in an urban area with relatively less noise than the others requiring driving and excavation. Although many cases of the helical pile constructions can be recently found, the bearing capacity of the pile has been limitedly studied. To this end, this contribution analyzes and presents comprehensive results of the ten field loading tests with an application of different parameters depending on joint condition and specification of the helical piles, and types of tests and grouting.

  • Pile driving work causes a vibration problem in the construction site using pile foundation and often causes civil affairs by construction noise around the construction site. For the vibration and noise problems, the driving after drilling method rather than the direct driving method is being generalized for reducing vibration and noise. However, this method also causes civil affairs when the driving work is operated in adjacent area. This study suggests a criterion for evaluating an optimal allowed distance for pile driving work by the driving after drilling method. Actual surveys of vibration and noise for pile driving work in seven construction sites were used for developing regression analysis equations. The results can be a standard to estimate the allowed distance to avoid vibration and noise problems in pile driving work for deep foundation.

  • The helical pile is a manufactured steel pile consisting of one or more helix-shaped bearing plates affixed to a central shaft. This pile is installed by rotating the shaft into the ground to support structural loads. Advantages of the helical pile are no need for boring or grout process, and ability to install a pile foundation with relatively light devices. In this study, an optimized design method for helical piles is proposed to minimize the material cost with consideration of the load bearing capacity obtained by the cylindrical shear method. The harmony search meta-heuristic algorithm was adopted for optimization process. The optimized design was verified by comparing with the 2009 International building code. It is noted that the optimization for the configuration of helical piles along with material cost proves to be an out-performed tool in designing helical pile foundation with economic feasibility.

  • The estimation of pile bearing capacity is important since the design details are determined from the result. There are numerous ways of determining the pile design load, but only few of them are chosen in the actual design. According to the recent investigation in Korea, the formulas proposed by Meyerhof based on the SPT N values are most frequently chosen in the design stage. In the study, various static and dynamic formulas have been used in predicting the allowable bearing capacity of a pile. Further, the reliability of these formulas has been verified by comparing the perdicted values with the static and dynamic load test measurements. Also in cases, these methods of pile bearing capacity determination do not take the time effect consideration, the actual allowable load as determined from pile load test indicates severe deviation from the design value. The principle results of this study are summarized as follows : A a result of estimate the reliability in criterion of the Davisson method, in was showed that Terzaghi & Peck > Chin > Meyerhof > Modified Meyerhof method was the most reliable method for the prediction of bearing capacity. Comparisons of the various pile-driving formulas showed that Modified Engineering News was the most reliable method. However, a significant error happened between dynamic bearing capacity equation was judged that uncertainty of hammer efficiency, characteristics of variable , time effect etc... was not considered. As a result of considering time effect increased skin friction capacity higher than end bearing capacity. It was found out that it would be possible to increase the skin friction capacity 1.99 times higher than a driving. As a result of considering 7 day's time effect, it was obtained that Engineering News. Modified Engineering News. • For the development of load and resistance factor design, reliability analysis is required to calibrate resistance factors in the framework of reliability theory. The distribution of measured-to-predicted pile resistance ratio was constructed based on only the results of load tests conducted to failure for the assessment of uncertainty regarding pile resistance and used in the conventional reliability analysis. In other words, successful pile load test (piles resisted twice their design loads without failure) results were discarded, and therefore, were not reflected in the reliability analysis. In this paper, a new systematic method based on Bayesian theory is used to update reliability index of driven steel pile piles by adding more pile load test results, even not conducted to failure, into the prior distribution of pile resistance ratio. Fifty seven static pile load tests performed to failure in Korea were compiled for the construction of prior distribution of pile resistance ratio. Reliability analyses were performed using the updated distribution of pile resistance ratio and the total load distribution using First-order Reliability Method (FORM). The challenge of this study is that the distribution updates of pile resistance ratio are possible using the load test results even not conducted to failure, and that Bayesian update are most effective when limited data are available for reliability analysis or resistance factors calibration.

  • Driven pile has the excellent bearing characteristics and good economics, so it is known as the comparative piling method. To use the advantages of driven pile fully, it is necessary to perform the proper construction management. Engineers must drive pile to the proper bearing layer with proper blow energy and measure the blow count and penetration per certain depth to analyze the bearing capacity and driveability. In conventional method, these parameters have been measured manually so it was difficult to get good accuracy. After PIR-D(Pile Installation Recorder-Driven Pile) was attached to the driving equipment, the hammer efficiency, blow count and penetration in blow/10cm were measured automatically. In this paper, to givethe rational judgement criteria of bearing layer, driveability, blow/10cm according to pile depth during pile driving, the some relationship between the driving resistance and ground layer distribution was analyzed. The ground investigation during piles (PHC ${\Phi}450,\;{\Phi}400\;&\;Steel\;Pile\;{\Phi}609{\ast}16t$) installation in the marine clay layer in Incheon, the sandy soil layer in Yongin and the tuff layer in Pusan was done. And measuring hammer efficiency not doing recently, we could compare hammer efficiency(Eh) by PIR-D and energy transfer ratio(ETR) by Pile Dynamic Analyzer(PDA).

  • Vibrations induced by traffic loading and construction activities are extremely important due to their potential to cause damage to adjacent structures and toy complaints to the neighbors. Vibration induced damage to the built environment may be caused by the direct transmission of vibrations as well as by the, vibration induced differential settlement. In order to effectively control the vibration related problems, the accurate in-situ vibration monitoring is essential. In this paper, a calibration technique of a geophone which is widely used in practice was described. Once the frequency characteristics of individual geophones were calibrated, the 3fomponent geophone was developed for the in-depth vibration measurement, and the dot ailed calibration and application techniques of the 3fomponent geophone were described. Vibrations caused by blasting, train loading, and pile driving were measured and the applicability of the 3fomponent geophone was assessed.

  • This paper presents an equation to depict the penetration behavior during the standard penetration test (SPT) in sandy deposits. An energy balance approach is considered and the driving mechanism of the SPT sampler is conceptually modeled as that of a miniature open-ended steel pipe pile into sands. The equation consists of three sets of input parameters including hyperbolic parameters (m and ${\lambda}$) which are difficult to determine. An iterative technique is thus applied to determine the optimized values of m and ${\lambda}$ using three measured values from a routine SPT data. It is verified from a well-documented record that the simulated penetration curves are in good agreement with the measured ones. At a given depth, the increase in m results in the decrease in ${\lambda}$ and the increase in the curvature of the penetration curve as well as the simulated N-value. Generally, the predicted penetration curve becomes nearly straight for the portion of exceeding the seating drive zone, which is more pronounced as soil density increases. Thus, the simulation method can be applied to extrapolating a prematurely completed test data, i.e., to determining the N value equivalent to a 30 cm penetration. A simple linear equation is considered for obtaining similar results.
