The Development Trend of a VTOL MAV with a Ducted Propellant (덕티드 추진체를 사용한 수직 이·착륙 초소형 무인 항공기 개발 동향)

  • This purpose of this paper was to review the development trend of the VTOL MAVs with a ducted propellant that can fly like the VTOL at intermediate and high speeds, hovering, landing, and lifting off vertically over urban areas, warships, bridges, and mountainous terrains. The MAV differs in flight characteristics from helicopters and fixed wings in many respects. In addition to enhancing thrust, the duct protects personnel from accidental contact with the spinning rotor. The purpose of the U.S. Army FCS and DARPA's OAV program is spurring development of a the VTOL ducted MAV. Today's MAVs are equipped with video/infrared cameras to hover-and-stare at enemies hidden behind forests and hills for approximately one hour surveillance and reconnaissance. Class-I is a VTOL ducted MAV developed in size and weight that individual soldiers can store in their backpacks. Class-II is the development of an organic VTOL ducted fan MAV with twice the operating time and a wider range of flight than Class-I. MAVs will need to develop to perch-and-stare technology for lengthy operation on the current hover-and-stare. The near future OAV's concept is to expand its mission capability and efficiency with a joint operation that automatically lifts-off, lands, refuels, and recharges on the vehicle's landing pad while the manned-unmanned ground vehicle is in operation. A ducted MAV needs the development of highly accurate relative position technology using low cost and small GPS for automatic lift-off and landing on the landing pad. There is also a need to develop a common command and control architecture that enables the cooperative operation of organisms between a VTOL ducted MAV and a manned-unmanned ground vehicle.

Development of UAV Flight Control Software using Model-Based Development(MBD) Technology (모델기반 개발기술을 적용한 무인항공기 비행제어 소프트웨어 개발)

  • This paper describes the Model-Based Development(MBD) process behind the flight control software of a close-range unmanned aerial vehicle(KUS-9). An integrated development environment was created using a commercial tool(MATLAB $Simulink^{(R)}$), which was utilized to design models for linear/nonlinear simulation, flight control law, operational logic and HILS(Hardware In the Loop Simulation) system. Software requirements were validated through flight simulations and peer reviews during the design process, whereas the models were verified through the application of a DO-178B verification tool. The integrity of automatically generated C code was verified by using a separate S/W testing tool. The finished software product was embedded on two different types of hardware and real-time operating system(uC/OS-II, VxWorks) to perform HILS and flight tests. The key findings of this study are that MBD Technology enables the development of a reusable and an extensible software product and auto-code generation technology allows the production of a highly reliable flight control software under a compressed time schedule.

Laser Tracking Analysis of Space Debris using SOLT System at Mt. Gamak (감악산 SOLT 시스템을 이용한 우주잔해물 레이저추적 성능분석)

  • Space debris has been a major issue recently for the space-active nations because its growing population is expected to increase the collision risk with operational satellites. Radar and electro-optical system has been used for space debris surveillance, which may cause unnecessary anti-collision manoeuvers due to their low tracking accuracy. So an additional tracking system is required to improve the predicted orbit accuracy and then to jude the anti-collision maneouvers more efficiently. The laser tracking system has been considered as an alternative to decrease these unnecessary manoeuvers. Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute has been developing a space object laser tracking system which is capable of laser tracking for satellites with retro-reflectors and for space debris using high power laser, and satellite imaging using adaptive optics. In this study, the tracking capability is analyzed for space debris using high power laser based on link budget, false alarm probability and signal detection probability.

Model-Based Approach to Flight Test System Development to Cope with Demand for Simultaneous Guided Missile Flight Tests (동시다발적인 유도무기 비행시험 수요에 대응하기 위한 모델기반 비행시험 시스템 개발)

  • Flight test systems should monitor various conditions in real time during flight tests and take safety measures in an emergency. The importance of ensuring test safety increases in more complicated and wider test environments. Also, due to the transition of wartime operational authority, many guided missile systems must be developed simultaneously. Early deployment and budget reduction by shortening the development and T&E periods are also necessary. Consequently, the risk of flight tests under the circumstance of inefficient test resources is increasing. To address this deficiency, a flight test system model using SysML was proposed in this study. The method of designing and verifying the test system is based on the agile shift left testing methodology of advanced T&E labs and utilizing a system reference model in the aerospace field. Through modeling and simulation analysis, early identification and correction of faults resulting from inconsistent test requirements can mitigate the risk of delays during the T&E phase of flight tests. Also, because the flight test system model was constructed using SysML, it can be applied to test various guided missile systems.

  • In nearly all space environments, the solar cell degradation is dominated by protons[1]. Even through a GEO orbit lines in the electron radiation belts, the protons emitted from any solar event will still dominate the degradation[1]. Since COMS launch on June 26 2010, the proton events with the fluence of more than approximately 30 times the average level of perennial observations were observed between January 23 - 29 2012 and March 07 - 14 2012[16]. This paper studies the solar cell degradation by solar proton events in January and March 2012 for the open circuit voltage(Voc) of a witness cell and the short circuit current(Isc) of a section connected to a shunt switch. To evaluate the performance of solar cell, the flight data of voltage and current are corrected to the temperature, the Earth-Sun distance and the Sun angle and then compare with the solar cell characteristics at BOL. The Voc voltage dropped about 23.6mV compare after the March 2012 proton events to before the January 2012 proton events. The Voc voltage dropped less than 1% at BOL, which is 2575mV. The Isc current decreased negligible, as expected, in the March 2012 proton events.

Conceptual Design of 6U Micro-Satellite System for Optical Images of 3 m GSD (3 m급 광학영상 촬영을 위한 6U 초소형위성 시스템 개념설계)

  • The purpose of this study was to present a conceptual design of the 6U micro-satellite system for optical image of 3 m GSD. An optical camera system with a payload of 3 m GSD image was designed and optimized. The optical system has a diameter of Ø78 mm, length 250 mm, and 1400 mm focal length. The requirement and constraints were configured for the 6U micro-satellite bus system with the payload. Satisfying the requirement and constraints, the subsystems of the 6U bus were designed such as attitude and orbit control, propulsion, command and data handling, electrical power, communication, structures and mechanisms, and thermal control subsystem. The mass budget, power budget, and communication link budget were also confirmed for the 6U micro-satellite comprising the optical payload and the subsystems of bus. To take optical images, a mission operation concept is proposed for the 6U micro-satellite in a low-Earth orbit. A constellation comprising many 6U micro-satellites studied in this paper, can provide with various data for reconnaissance and disaster tracking.

A Design of Fire Monitoring System Based On Unmaned Helicopter and Sensor Network (무인헬기 및 센서네트워크 기반 화재 감시 시스템 설계)

  • Recently, fires happen to occur owing to various factors. However, the demage caused by the fire is eyer increasing because timely actions could not be taken. To reduce the demage, a development of fire detection system which makes it possible to take adequate actions is requited. In this work, a sensor network-based fire detection system which utilizes both sensor nodes equipped with smoke sensor and unmaned helicopter is proposed. The proposed system is composed of unmaned helicopter which can gather the measurement data from the deployed sensor nodes and the embedded system which can get visual information on the firing spot and transmit these images to a remote server computer. The proposed system is applied to actual test bed to verify its feasibility.

  • An airborne radar is an essential aviation electronic system of the aircraft to perform various missions in all weather environments. This paper presents the design, development, and test results of the multi-mode pulsed Doppler radar system test model for helicopter-borne flight test. This radar system consists of 4 LRU units, which include ANTU(Antenna Unit), TRU(Tx Rx Unit), RSDU(Radar Signal & Data Processing Unit) and DISU(Display Unit). The developed technologies include the TACCAR processor, planar array antenna, TWTA transmitter, coherent I/Q detector, digital pulse compression, DSP based Doppler FFT filtering, adaptive CFAR, IMU, and tracking capability. The design performance of the developed radar system is verified through various helicopter-borne field tests including MTD (Moving Target Detector) capability for the Doppler compensation due to the moving platform motion.

  • UAVs(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) can be used in variant fields fornot only combat, but also recon, observation and exploration. Moreover, UAVs capacity can be expanded to impossible missions for existing surveillance system such as SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) technology that collecting images from all weather conditions. In recent days, with development of highly efficient IC and lightened system technology, there are significant increase of researches and demands to make SAR sensor as a payload of UAV. Therefore, this paper contains development process and results of small signal generator and RF device as a core module of SAR system based on the digital device of DDS.

  • As a multi-mission GEO satellite, COMS system is being developed jointly by KARI, ETRI, KORDI, KMA, and industries from both abroad and domestic. EADS ASRTIUM is the prime contractor for manufacturing the COMS. ETRI is developing the COMS Ka-band payload and SGCS with the fund from MIC. COMS Satellite Ground Control System (SGCS) will be the only system for monitor and control of the satellite in orbit. In order to fulfill the mission operations of the three payloads and spacecraft bus, COMS SGCS performs telemetry reception and processing, satellite tracking and ranging, command generation and transmission, satellite mission planning, flight dynamics operations, and satellite simulation, By the proper functional allocations, COMS SGCS is divided into five subsystems such as TTC, ROS, MPS, FDS, and CSS. In this paper, functional design of the COMS SGCS is described as five subsystems and the interfaces among the subsystems.
