A Study on Technology Forecasting of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) Using TFDEA (TFDEA를 이용한 무인항공기 기술예측에 관한 연구)

  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are essential systems for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations in current battlespace. And its importance will be getting extended because of complexity and uncertainty of battlespace. In this study, we forecast the advancement of 96 UAVs during the period of 32 years from 1982 to 2014 using TFDEA. TFDEA is a quantitative technology forecasting method which is characterized as non-parametric and non-statistical mathematical programming. Inman et al. (2006) showed that TFDEA is more accurate in forecasting compared with classical econometrics (e.g. regression). This study got 4.06% point of annual technological rate of change (RoC) for UAVs by applying TFDEA. And most UAVs in the period are inefficient according to the global SOA frontiers. That is because the countries which develop UAVs are in the middle class of technological level, so more than 60% of world UAVs markets are shared by North America and Europe which are advanced countries in terms of technological maturity level. This study could give some insights for UAVs development and its advancement. And also can be used for evaluating the adequacy of Required Operational Capability (ROC) of suggested future systems and managing the progress of Research and Development (R&D).

  • In conjunction with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the unmanned aerial vehicle industry is being developed to a new paradigm by combining advanced technologies such as AI, Big Data and the IoT. Aeronautical developed countries such as the U.S. are focusing their efforts on the development of the safer unmanned aerial vehicles. The Korea Aerospace Research Institute, as part of the national R&D project in 2011, had succeeded in developing the first vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) UAS, called Smart-UAV. However, although the development technology of the VTOL UAS is possessed, developing and operating of the VTOL UAS for commercial or military use are limited. The type certification procedure of the VTOL UAS developed by domestic technology is stipulated in the Korean Aviation Safety Act, but the Korean VTOL UAS airworthiness standards (KAS) hsve not been established. Thus, this study investigated the development trends of the VTOL UAS in Korea and abroad and national certification systems and procedures, and benchmarked the special conditions for the VTOL aircraft, announced by the EASA on July 2, 2019, to establish standards for type certificate of the VTOL UAS in Korea.

  • Prospecting future social environmental changes and improvement research on future technologies is required for prospecting promising technology, as it would be useful for institution·company to set up technical planning. This study aims at providing a methodology for retaining international technology competitiveness, marketable industry, and sustainable promising technology in a field of new growth engine industry such as national unmanned aerial vehicle industry. We draw a result by analysing with tools such as KrKwic, Excel, NetMiner, presenting methods of a Social Network Analysis, sub-group analysis, and cognitive map analysis based on patent data in a field of unmanned aerial vehicle industry. Therefore, this study explored the technology evolution of UAV and to prospect promising technology. As a result, some future promising technologies are prospected as what worths concentrated investment, such as 'system integration tech', 'assessment/airworthiness certification tech', 'avionics', 'pilot control tech', 'identification of friend or foe', 'flight control tech', 'supportive equipment'.

  • 항공분야 산업은 기계/전자/소재/정보통신 등 첨단과학기술이 유기적으로 융합되어 운영되는 대표적인 IT융합산업이다. 특히, 항공기에서 IT기반 기술이 융합되어 적용되는 곳은 조종사의 성공적인 임무수행을 위한 항공기에 탑재된 응용 소프트웨어와 항공전자장비들로 구성된 항공 임베디드 시스템이다. 항공 임베디드 시스템은 항공기의 성능과 직결되고 신규 개발 및 성능 개량 시 필수적으로 개발해야하는 시스템 종속적인 1차 시스템과 시스템 독립적이며 국내외 부품시장에서 구매 가능한 서브시스템인 2차 시스템으로 나눌 수 있다. 최근 기간산업에 IT 활용 비중이 점차 높아짐에 따라 IT가 기간산업의 경쟁력을 좌우하는 핵심 요소로 부상하고 있으나, IT산업은 성장이 점차 둔화되고 있는 실정이다. 지식경제부는 이에 따라 기간산업의 경쟁력을 높이고 IT기반 융합신산업을 창출하기 위해 5대 IT융합 신 산업 창출과제를 발표했다. 5대 과제중의 하나인 국방전력 극대화 사업으로 우리 기술로 개발한 초음속 고등훈련기인 T-50에 탑재되는 임베디드 소프트웨어 및 컴퓨터를 국산화하고 있다. 본 사업으로 비행운용프로그램, 실시간 운영체제, 미들웨어, 임무컴퓨터 및 무장관리컴퓨터 등이 순조롭게 개발될 경우 전량수입에 의존하고 있는 T-50의 1차 시스템을 100% 국산화할 수 있을 것으로 기대되며 수입대체 효과와 유지보수비용 절감으로 약 2조원의 부가가치 창출이 예상된다. 본 논문에서는 현재 개발을 진행하고 있는 항공 임베디드 시스템에 대하여 알아본다.

Comparison of Development and Marketing Strategies of Airbus and Boeing (에어버스와 보잉사의 대형민간항공기 개발 및 마케팅 전략 비교 연구)

  • For the next two decades the civil aviation industry is expected to grow. Both Airbus and Boeing predict a delivery of almost 20,000 new Large Civil Aircraft (LCA). LCA is defined as a large civil jet aircraft with 100 seats or more. Airbus offers the Superjumbo, A380 (>555 seats), while Boeing presents the Dreamliner, B787 (200 – 300 seats). Their philosophies are very different. In the wake of B787, Airbus intends to offer a new aircraft, A350, as the competitor against B787, with the same engines developed for B787. The U.S. government pushed by Boeing, on the day of October 6, 2004, filed a suit against Airbus for wrongful subsidy to the World Trade Organization (WTO). A brief overview is given on the LCA development status in the world commercial aircraft market. Since there have been little changes in engine and avionics manufacturers in the LCA industry, the airframe area only is the object of this study. An analysis is carried out to find out the differences in development and marketing strategies of two major LCA manufacturers, Airbus and Boeing. The authors predict that Boeing will recapture its No. 1 position soon, while the leading edge in technology may be slipped away from Boeing.

  • In this paper, we present the status and prospect for PAV propulsion system. Reciprocating engines are suitable for current PAV because of its efficiency and price advantages. However, fuel cells and batteries may replace conventional engines in the near future.

  • 항공기 기술의 발전은 다양한 과학기술 분야의 발달에 끊임없이 큰 영향을 주어왔고, 또 기기서 파생된 신 기술도 수없이 발생하였다. NC 공작기계도 그 하나이다. 제 2차 세계대전 후 미공군은 복잡한 형상의 항공기 부품가공과 고정밀도의 검사용 Gauge를 제작할 필요성을 얻게 되었다. Helicopter의 Rotor blade의 Prifile 검사용 Plate gauge를 가공할 수 있는 기계를 개발 중에 있었던 J.T.Person이 Jig boring machine을 저자적으로 제어하면서 Gauge를 가공하는 방법을 1947년 미공군에 제안하게 되었다. 이것이 NC 발달사에 기록된 역사적인 사실이며 이 Project는 후에 MIT로 넘아가고 1952년에 NC milling machine을 완성시켰다. 그 후, 1955년 Gidding & Lewis사가 최초로 NC 공작기계를 공업화한 제1호기 Numericord를 시장에 내 놓게 되었다.

  • Since the inception of Systems Engineering as a discipline, Systems Engineering has been providing technical leadership toward the successful completion of projects. In today's increasingly competitive marketplace, many organizations are turning to systems engineering practices to improve theft responsibilities to the needs and expectations of various stockholders. This paper is intended to provide a systems engineering process, which is tailored to aircraft development program, through the basic understanding of system engineering standards and its evolution over the decades.

A Comparative Study of Domestic and International regulation on Mixed-fleet Flying of Flight crew (운항승무원의 항공기 2개 형식 운항관련 국내외 기준 비교 연구)

  • The Chicago Convention and Annexes have become the basis of aviation safety regulations for every contracting state. Generally, the State's aviation safety regulations refer to the Standards and Recommended Practices(SARPs) provided in the Annexes of the Chicago Convention. In order to properly reflect international aviation safety regulations, constant studies of the aviation fields are of paramount importance. This Paper is intended to identify the main differences between korean and foreign regulation and suggest a few amendment proposals on Mixed-fleet Flying(at or more two aircraft type operation) of flight crew. Comparing with these regulations, the korean regulations and implementations have some insufficiency points. I suggest some amendment proposals of korean regulations concerning Mixed-fleet Flying that flight crew operate aircraft of different types. Basically an operator shall not assign a pilot-in-command or a co-pilot to operate at the flight controls of a type of airplane during take-off and landing unless that pilot has operated the flight controls during at least three take-offs and landings within the preceding 90 days on the same type of airplane or in a flight simulator. Also, flight crew members are familiarized with the significant differences in equipment and/or procedures between concurrently operated types. An operator shall ensure that piloting technique and the ability to execute emergency procedures is checked in such a way as to demonstrate the pilot's competence on each type or variant of a type of airplane. Proficiency check shall be performed periodically. When an operator schedules flight crew on different types of airplanes with similar characteristics in terms of operating procedures, systems and handling, the State shall decide the requirements for each type of airplane can be combined. In conclusion, it is necessary for flight crew members to remain concurrently qualified to operate multiple types. The operator shall have a program to include, as a minimum, required differences training between types and qualification to maintain currency on each type. If the Operator utilizes flight crew members to concurrently operate aircraft of different types, the operator shall have qualification processes approved or accepted by the State. If applicable, the qualification curriculum as defined in the operator's Advanced Qualification Program could be applied. Flight crew members are familiarized with the significant differences in equipment and/or procedures between concurrently operated types. The difference among different types of airpcrafts decrease and standards for these airpcrafts can be applied increasingly because function and performance have been improved by aircraft manufacture company in accordance to basic aircraft system in terms of developing new aircrafts for flight standard procedure and safety of flight. Also, it becomes more necessary for flight crews to control multi aircraft types due to various aviation business and activation of leisure business. Nevertheless, in terms of flight crew training and qualification program, there are no regulations in Korea to be applied to new aircraft types differently in accordance with different levels. In addition, it has no choice different programs based on different levels because there are not provisions to restrict or limit and specific standards to operate at or more than two aircraft types for flight safety. Therefore the aviation authority introduce Flight Standardization and/or Operational Evaluation Board in order to analysis differences among aircraft types. In addition to that, the aviation authority should also improve standard flight evaluation and qualification system among different aircraft types for flight crews to apply reasonable training and qualification efficiently. For all the issue mentioned above, I have studied the ICAO SARPs and some state's regulation concerning operating aircraft of different types(Mixed-fleet flying), and suggested some proposals on the different aircraft type operation as an example of comprehensive problem solving. I hope that this paper is 1) to help understanding about the international issue, 2) to help the improvement of korean aviation regulations, 3) to help compliance with international standards and to contribute to the promotion of aviation safety, in addition.

  • 일찍이 항공기는 물론 최신 무기분야와 우주개발에 있어서 미·소 양국이 패권을 다투는 각축전 사이에서 유럽은 그들의 자존심을 지키는 독자적인 개발을 계속해 왔다. 그런 의미에서 1980년대에 세계적으로 본격화 하기 시작한 전투기 개발에 있어 유럽 각국의 차세대 전투기 개발계획은 여러 가지 문제에 직면하면서도 꾸준한 노력을 계속해 미국이나 러시아에 뒤지지 않을만한 훌륭한 기종을 만들어 냈다. 그것이 오늘날 볼 수 있는 스웨덴의 그리펜, 프랑스의 라팔, 영국, 독일, 이탈리아, 스페인 공동의 유로파이터 2000등 세가지 기종은 유럽이 자랑하는 기종들이며 타의 추종을 불허하면서 세계 시장을 두고 러시아, 미국과 조용한 경쟁을 벌이고 있다. 이러한 유럽의 세가지 최신형 전투기의 최근 동향을 알아보기 위해 본고를 준비했다.
