  • The purpose of the present study is to investigate frequency related information and syllable structure constraints on Sino-Korean. Previous studies on Sino-Korean have mostly investigated the historical change of sounds and reviewed archaic features of Chinese language in Sino-Korean. Unfortunately, there is little study on the sounds of contemporary Sino-Korean in terms of syllable structure constraints. For the purpose of the present study, sounds of 7,742 Chinese characters used in Sino-Korean (7,795 syllables) were investigated and syllable matrices made based on the results of frequency related information. As a result, 483 syllable types were observed and the most frequently observed syllables were as follows: /ku/ (103) > /ki/ (100) > /ju/ (87) > /pi/ (86). Only 16 out of 19 consonants are used for Sino-Korean. /$t^{\ast}$/ and /$p^{\ast}$/ are never used in Sino-Korean and /kh, $s^{\ast}$, $k^{\ast}$/ occur only a few times (3, 2, 1 respectively). /k/ (17.5%) shows the highest frequency and /n, ${\eta}$, 1, tc, m/ occupied the next rankings. Among 20 vowel types, /a/ showed the highest frequency and /o, u, i, $j{\Lambda}$, ${\Lambda}$/ occupied the next rankings. Based on the syllable matrices, gaps were observed and classified into accidental or systematic ones. Onset and nucleus, nucleus and coda, onset and coda, and other syllable structure constraints of Sino-Korean were listed.

  • Abstracts and papers written in Korean presented in the 26th meeting of the Korea Quaternary Association held at Kongju University in November, 1999 are reviewed with an attention to such as writing well in Korean. Paragraphs and sentences of manuscripts are dotted with words and expressions of foreign languages such as Japanese, Chinese, English, and very long sentences. Undesirable expressions include also contradictory meanings, difficult expressions using Chinese characters, and incorrect sentences and wordings, and etc. Some recommendations for good manuscripts written in Korean are suggested. They include reading of science books for general readers and drilling for writing good manuscripts in Korean. Writing manuscripts in ample time, discussions with colleagues, and open-minded mentality of authors to accept critics are included in the drilling for writing good manuscripts. Editorial board should also check the manuscripts before printing.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the problems concerning the arrangement of 679 Korean music schedules in the fifth edition of KDC and to propose improvements of that problems. In this study, therefore, the theoretical knowledge background of Korean music is examined first. Then, the development of 679 Korean music section and subsection from first edition to the fifth edition of KDC were examined. And the expansion aspects and their problems of 679 Korean music of the fifth edition of KDC were analyzed and some suggestions to solve that problems were proposed.

  • This paper describes design and implementation of a Web-based information service that supports management and retrieval of use cases for earth-related materials in traditional Korean construction process. Managed data are gathered from old traditional books which are written in Chinese characters. Development needs to consider providing users effective interface to retrieve information from the service easily. Gathering and analysis of earth-related data are processed in parallel to the database construction. Data store and management needs to be flexible enough. This paper introduces several design and implementation issues for the developed service, and proposes solutions for the them.

  • Functional recovery after mandibular condyle fracture was a contradictory result of many authors. The treatment goal of condyle fracture has been directed primarily toward restoration of functional movement of the mandible. We selected some patients who requested functional therapy in many cases of condylar fracture, depend on pattern of fracture, patient's demand, occlusion, age. Without intermaxillary fixation, we induced the patients to rapid healing of temporomandibular function and normal mandibular protrusive, lateral movement as a result of early functional therapy by activator. So, the authors report the cases with review of concerned literature.

  • The aim of this study is to develop a technique for keyword extraction in Korean-Chinese text in the modern period. We considered a Korean morphological analyzer and a particle in classical Chinese as a possible method for this study. We applied our method to the journal "Sisachongbo," employing proper-noun dictionaries and a list of stop words to extract index terms. The results show that our system achieved better performance than a Chinese morphological analyzer in terms of recall and precision. This study is the first research to develop an automatic indexing system in the traditional Korean-Chinese mixed text.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for off line recognition of handwritten characters, especially effective for large-set characters such as Korean and Chinese characters. The algorithm is based on a minimum distance dlassification method which is simple and easy to implement but suffers from low recognition performance. Two strategies have been developed to improve its performance; one is multi-stage pre-classification and the other is candicate reordering. Effectiveness of the algorithm has been proven by and experimet with the samples of 574 classes in a handwritten Korean character catabase named PE02, where 86.0% of recognition accuracy and 15 characters per second of processing speed have been obtained.

  • The underground living spaces have become one of the major environment of this decade in urban area. This study was carried out to examine contamination level for purpose of preservation of the pleasant underground environment. Three subway stations and three underground shopping centers in Seoul and two underground shopping centers in Busan were selected and surveyed by measuring gaseous pollutants $(SO_2,\; NO_2,\;CO,\;HC,\; HCHO,\;CO_2)$, dust, airborne microbes, and the other air condtions (temperature, humidity, air pressure, air flow, kata cooling power). These examined data were compared with four kinds of standard (building sanitation management, room air quality standards, occupational safety and health standards, ventilation equipment) as environmental hygiene.

  • In this paper, we propose an on-line recognition system of chinese characters using an adaptive resonance theory-1(ART-1) neural network. Strokes, primitive components of chinese characters are usually warped into a cursive form and classifying them is very difficult. To deal with such cursive strokes, we use an ART-1 neural network that has the following advantages: (1) it automatically assembles similar patterns together to form classes in a self-organized manner: (2) it directly accesses the recognition codes corresponding to binary input patterns after self-stabilizing; (3) it doesn't tends to get trapped in local minima, or globally incorrect solutions. A database for character recognition also dynamically constructed with generalized character lists, and a new character can be included simply by adding a new sequence to the list. Character recognition is achieved by traversing the chinese datbase with a sequence of recognized strokes and positional relations between the strokes. To verify the performance of the system. We tested it for 1800 daily-used basic chinese second per character. This results suggest that the proposed system is pertinent to be put into practical use.

  • Choropleth map is a type of thematic maps in which areal units are shaded with a color or pattern that symbolizes some characteristic of the mapped unit. CMS was first developed to produce choropleth maps on ordinary microcomputer environments in 1988. Since then there have been significant technological developments and enhancements in user environments, which have affected the field of choropleth mapping systems posi¬tively. A new version of CMS was developed in accordance with these changes. CMS II requires an IBM PC, or compatible, with the minimum 640KB memory and VGA graphic board. It supports HP laser jet printers to output a high resolution map. The program can use Hangul letters for main menu, map title, and legend. And dBase file format (DEW) was implemented to exchange attribute files effectively.
