  • This paper aims to present the model of engineering design education workshop for appropriate technologies. Since 2008 Handong Innovation Center for Engineering Education and a Non-Profit Organization, Sharing and Technology, held engineering design workshop during every summer break. We present the contents of the workshop and analyze the educational effects of the program. The workshop is entitled "Engineering Design Academy for the other 90%" because we take it serious that most of the research and development efforts of the science and technologies in the world is just focused on the rich people while the other 90% people in the world are unreachable from the benefits of the modern technologies. By the workshop we tries to provide the college students the perspectives on the worldwide poverty problems and to encourage them to serve the 3rd world people in need through their specialties in the field of engineering profession. The evaluation results by participants are very positive. Especially, we began invite the 3rd world people to the workshop as design problem clients from 2010 summer workshop. The evaluation from them are also very positive. The analysis results on the educational effects of the workshop show that the workshop improves the students skills required by the ABEEK (Acreditation Board of Engineering Education of Korea) including not only design capability but also team work, communication skill, understanding the social impacts of engineering design, engineering ethics, and globalization.

  • A new ground water sampler was developed and evaluated for target depth sampling under most rigorous field conditions. This new concept sampler comprises an air-cylinder, a hypodermic needle and a sampling bottle. Pressurized air or nitrogen gas can be used as a mechanical power source to operate the sampler. The air-cylinder is used to jab the hypodermic needle into the rubber cap of the sampling bottle. The hypodermic needle functions as a pathway to inject groundwater into the sampling bottle. Field test was conducted in a seawater intrusion monitoring well located at Handong district of Jeju Island. Water qualities in this well are periodically changed from the effects of sea water. Water sampling fir the same target depth in this well were tried at various times, and variations in electrical conductivity and pressure at the inside and outside of the sampler were measured using CTD divers. We found that the device could collect water samples only when it was actuated, and the pattern and range of variations in electrical conductivities and pressures measured at the inside and outside of the sampler were nearly identical. These results indicate that water samples using the sampler presented in this study represent correctly water qualities in which the samplings were made at a specific target depth in a well.

  • Clarify wind energy productivity depends on three factors: the wind probability density function(PDF), the turbine's power curve, and the air density. The wind PDF gives the probability that a variable will take on the wind speed value. Wind shear refers to the change in wind speed with height above ground. The wind speed tends to increase with the height above ground. also, Wind PDF refers to the change with height above ground. Wind analysts typically use the Weibull distribution to characterize the breadth of the distribution of wind speeds. The Weibull distribution has the two-parameter: the scale factor c and the shape factor k. We can use a linear least squares algorithm(or Ln-least method) and moment method to fit a Weibull distribution to measured wind speed data which data was located same site and different height. In this study, find that the scale factor is related to the average wind speed than the shape factor. and also different types of terrain are characterized by different the scale factor slop with height above ground. The gross turbine power output (before accounting for losses) was caculated the power curve whose corresponding air density is closest to the air density. and air desity was choose two way. one is the pressure of the International Standard Atmosphere up to an elevation, the other is the measured air pressure and temperature to calculate the air density. and then each power output was compared.

  • Groundwater level changes in coastal aquifers occur due to oceanic tides, where the properties of oceanic tides can be applied to estimate hyadraulic parameters. Hydraulic parameters of coastal aquifers located in eastern part of Jeju island were estimated using the tidal response technique. Groundwater level data from a saltwater intrusion monitoring well system was used which showed tidal effects from 3 to 5 km. The hydraulic gradient was assessed by utilizing the filtering method from 71 consecutive hourly water-level observations. Calculated hydraulic diffusivity ranged from 2.94${\times}10^7m^2d^{-1}$ to 4.36${\times}10^7m^2d^{-1}$ . The hydraulic gradient of the coastal aquifer area was found to be ~$10^{-4}$, whereas the gradient of the area between wells Handong-1 and 2 was found to be ~$10^{-6}$, which is very low comparatively. Analysis of groundwater monitoring data showed that groundwater levels are periodically higher near coastal areas compared to that of inner land areas due to oceanic tide influences. When assessing groundwater flow direction in coastal aquifers it is important to consider tidal fluctuation.

  • Financing plays an important role in the survival and growth of startups. This study investigates key factors that improve startup financing performance. To this end, we analyze the relationship between the proportion of intellectual property and the financing performance. In addition, this study also examine the impact of the founder's education level on the financing of startups, and the moderating effect of the founder's education level on the relationship between intellectual property proportion and financing. Based on the survey data of 331 startups, this study found that the proportion of intellectual property and the financing performance have an inverted U-shaped nonlinear relationship. While the founder's education level has a positive impact on the financing performance, it negatively moderate the relationship between the intellectual property proportion and the financing performance. Through these findings, this study suggests that it is necessary to maintain an adequate proportion of intellectual property in order to maximize startup financing performance. The higher education level of founder enhances the startup financing. Since the founder's education level weaken the effect of intellectual proporty's effect on startup financing, however, startups need to control the proportion of intellectual property to improving financing according to the founder's education level. Based on signal theory, this study proposes a new strategy of intellectual property to enhance startup financing performance.

  • The roles and functions of domestic public libraries are diversifying, but various problems have emerged due to internally biased book lending. In addition, due to the 4th Industrial Revolution, public libraries have introduced a book recommendation system focusing on popular books, but the variety of books that users can access is limited. Therefore, in this study, the public library unborrowed book recommendation system was implemented limiting its spatial scope to Duryu Library in Daegu City to enhance the satisfaction of public library users, by using the loan records data (213,093 cases), user information (35,561 people), etc. and utilizing methods like cluster analysis, topic modeling, content-based filtering recommendation algorithm, and conducted a survey on actual users' satisfaction to present the possibility and implications of the unborrowed book recommendation system. As a result of the analysis, the majority of users responded with high satisfaction, and was able to find the satisfaction was relatively high in the class classified by specific gender, age, occupation, and usual reading. Through the results of this study, it is expected that some problems such as biased book lending and reduced operational efficiency of public libraries can be improved, and limitations of the study was also presented.

  • Due to changes in the distribution industry, inner harbors have been on a sharp decline in the recent past. However, through the application of the right development plans, such harbors can be revitalized into vibrant urban areas again. The importance of inner harbors has been recognized by the relevant authorities in Korea which are now pushing forward with redevelopment plans for its inner harbors. This study proposes a new approach to redevelopment plans based on the recognition that inner harbors have unique characteristics involving both inland areas and the ocean. In the study, representative inner harbors were selected and analyzed comparatively according to two distinct concepts of location: the Gateway Concept and the Central Place Concept. Based on these concepts, the conditions of the inner harbors were examined. Their location can be typed, and development directions were proposed according to their types and conditions. However, difficult points such as isolation and separation between an urban district and the harbor area, can be obstructions to their potential revival. An inner harbor needs to be considered as an intermediary, connecting place between the ocean and the city, not as another ordinary development area. In addition, a redevelopment plan should be accompanied by a strategic viewpoint to make the most of this feature.

  • In the present study, wave measurements at KOGA-W01 were analyzed and then the numerical wind waves simulations have been conducted to investigate the characteristics of wind waves in the Yellow sea. According to the present analysis, even though the location of the wave stations are close to the coastal region, the deep water waves are prevailed due to the short fetch length. Chun and Ahn's (2017a, b) numerical model has been extended to the Yellow Sea in this study. The effects of tide and tidal currents should be included in the model to accommodate the distinctive effect of large tidal range and tidal current in the Yellow Sea. The wave hindcasting results were compared with the wave measurements collected KOGA-W01 and Kyeockpo. The comparison shows the reasonable agreements between wave hindcastings and measured data, however the model significantly underestimate the wave period of swell waves from the south due to the narrow computational domain. Despite the poorly prediction in the significant wave period of swell waves which usually have small wave heights, the estimation of the extreme wave height and corresponding wave period shows good agreement with the measurement data.

  • In this paper, we present a simple and fast supervised learning framework based on model predictive control so as to learn motion controllers for a physic-based character to track given example motions. The proposed framework is composed of two components: training data generation and offline learning. Given an example motion, the former component stochastically controls the character motion with an optimal controller while repeatedly updating the controller for tracking the example motion through model predictive control over a time window from the current state of the character to a near future state. The repeated update of the optimal controller and the stochastic control make it possible to effectively explore various states that the character may have while mimicking the example motion and collect useful training data for supervised learning. Once all the training data is generated, the latter component normalizes the data to remove the disparity for magnitude and units inherent in the data and trains an artificial neural network with a simple architecture for a controller. The experimental results for walking and running motions demonstrate how effectively and fast the proposed framework produces physics-based motion controllers.
