The Effects of Housing Poverty on the Depression of the Elderly: The Mediating Effect of Social Service (노년기 주거빈곤이 우울에 미치는 영향: 사회서비스의 매개효과)

  • The study looked into the effect of housing poverty on the depression level for the elderly in depth. In this study, we defined housing poverty as sub-minimum standard housing conditions, excess housing expenditure and housing instability. In order to verify the correlation of two variables, a mediating model structured by social welfare service was used which gave out the 4th Korea welfare panel data. When it came to our research methods, structured equation analysis was applied to verify the mediating effect and theoretical background. The results revealed that housing poverty of the elderly directly affected their depression level. Also the satisfaction of social service showed a partial mediating effect between housing poverty and depression level. But the mediating effect of social service experience between housing poverty and depression level was not statistically significant. The outcome of this study indicated the practical and social intervention to promote a mental health of the elderly by improving residential environment.

The Effects of Elderly's Participation in Lifelong Education on the Ego Integrity, and The Mediating Effect of Life Satisfaction (노인평생교육 참여가 자아통합감에 미치는 영향과 생활만족도의 매개효과)

  • This study focused on the relationship between elderly's participation in lifelong education(participation availability, participating fields) and ego integrity. To verify the correlation of two variables, mediating model structured by life satisfaction was used. The data was Seoul Welfare Panel Data made by Seoul Welfare Foundation in 2010 and the total subject was 1,862 elderly aged over 60. When it comes to research methods, structured equation analysis for verifying the mediating effect was practiced. The findings are as follows: First, life satisfaction did function as partial mediator on relationship between elderly's participation in lifelong education and ego integrity. Second, elderly's life satisfaction increased as participating in field of language, not in field of culture and art. Ego integrity of elderly was increased as participating in field of culture and art, not in field of self-improvement and hobby. This study indicates theoretical and practical interventions to promote elderly's lifelong education based on the conclusion elderly's lifelong education participation in the aging society has positive effects on life satisfaction and ego integrity are meaningful for successful aging.

Indebtedness and Socioeconomic Deprivation : A Study of Debt Relief Program Users (과중채무자의 사회경제적 박탈에 관한 연구)

  • This study examined the degree of socioeconomic deprivation in the areas of material hardship, health, housing, employment, and social network among people using debt relief programs. The sample, 209 individuals, was recruited from major agencies offering debt relief programs, including Seoul Bankruptcy Court, Credit Counseling and Recovery Service, and Seoul Welfare Foundation. Data were collected through in-person interviews in 2016. The sample was compared in terms of the level of deprivation with the general population and the low-income group, extracted from the Korea Welfare Panel Study. The debtors group demonstrated a substantially higher level of deprivation on all the dimensions examined. For example, the proportion of people who suffered from hunger was 37.8% in the debtors group compared to 6.7% in the low-income group. The proportion of people who had suicidal ideation in the last 12 months was 57.9% compared to 19.2% in the low-income group and 2.7% in the general population. The level of deprivation was different by chapter choice of consumer bankruptcy. Policy and practice implications of the results were discussed.

A Study on the Relationship Between Depressive Symptoms and Alcohol Use - Focusing on 'Tension Reduction Theory' and 'Intoxication Theory'- (우울과 음주의 관계에 대한 연구 - '긴장감소가설'과 '독성가설'에 대한 검증을 중심으로 -)

  • Previous research indicates that depressive symptoms and alcohol consumption are highly correlated with each other. However, there is lack of consensus on the causal relationship between depressive symptoms and alcohol use. In order to address this limitation, this paper examines causal relationship between the two variables using non-recursive structural equation modeling, controlling sociodemographic and psycho-socio-behavioral variables. Data included 14,469 community dwelling individuals who participated in Korea Welfare Panel Study in 2006. Results showed that the effects of alcohol consumption on depressive symptoms was statistically significant, whereas the effects of depressive symptoms on alcohol consumption was not. Significant portions of the effects of psycho-socio-behavioral variables on depressive symptoms were indirect through their effects on alcohol consumption. Based on the results, implications for intervention and future research were discussed.

Effects of Living in Sub-Standard Housing Conditions on School Achievement (최저기준 미달 주거가 아동의 학업성취에 미치는 영향)

  • Using the children supplements of Korea Welfare Panel Study(first wave), this study examined that the correlation and differences between income-poverty(minimum cost of living)and housing- poverty(sub-standard housing) and analyzed the effects of living in sub-standard housing conditions on children's school achievement. The findings of the study are as follows. First, there is low correlation between income-poverty and housing-poverty. Second. there is differences of household characteristics between only housing-poverty household and only income-poverty household or income and housing poverty household. Third, living in sub-standard housing conditions has statistically significant negative effect on school achievement even after controlling for income-poverty, sex, self-esteem, adaptation to school life, family type, mother's education, private education cost, rearing behavior. The findings of this study suggest that more active housing policy approach is needed to support development of children living in sub-standard housing conditions. Based on this research, we present needed policies in the conclusion.

The effect of parents'socioeconomic status on academic achievement: Focusing on the mediating effect of parental emotional support and student's ego resilience (부모의 사회경제적 지위가 학업성취에 미치는 영향 : 부모의 정서적 지지와 학생 자아탄력성의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and empirically evaluate a theoretical model that delineated the processes whereby parents' socioeconomic status affected students'academic achievement via parental support and students' ego-resilience. The proposed model was tested with the first and second wave of a cohort sample of the first grade middle school students from the Korean Children Youth Panel survey by using linear structural relations techniques. The results of analysis showed firstly that parents' socioeconomic status, parental support and students' ego-resilience directly affected the level of students'academic achievement with statistical significance. Secondly, parental support, the proxy of social capital of the family, was contingent upon the parents'socioeconomic status. Thirdly, in addition to its direct effect, parents'socioeconomic status gave indirect effect on students' academic performance through parental support and ego-resilience. Based upon these results implications for social work intervention were provided.

A Study on the Relationship between Social Networks and Retirement Satisfaction of Old Retirees (고령은퇴자의 사회적 관계망과 은퇴만족도 관계 연구)

  • The objectives of this study were to examine how social networks of old retirees impact on their retirement satisfaction, and through this, to suggest ways of improving their retirement satisfaction. Data used in this study were from 2006 KLoSA(Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing), which were collected from 1,009 elderly people aged 65 and over who resided metropolis and smaller medium cities and answered regarding their retirement satisfaction. Data were analyzed by Binary Logistic Regression method. As a result, the frequency of contact with children, the number of participation in their social activities, and the satisfaction of relationship with children were the significant variables to predict retirement satisfaction. In addition, other variables such as gender, subjective health status, type of retirement, and duration of past retirement have been found as significant variables to explain retirement satisfaction. Implications for designing effective retirement plan and service systems have been discussed.

The Moderating Effect of Self-Esteem on the Association between Academic Stress and Self-Control in Adolescents (청소년의 학업스트레스와 자기통제에 있어 자아존중감의 조절효과)

  • The present study examined the capacity of Korean adolescents' self-esteem to buffer against the negative impact of academic stress on self-control. Based on the prevention science perspective, the conceptual framework for this study was developed from the strength model of self-control. Data for the present study were taken from the fourth wave of Korean Youth Panel Study. A sample of 2,169 students in the eleventh grade was analyzed to identify relationships between the study variables. As expected, self-esteem moderated the association between academic stress and self-control. Implications for the study findings are discussed.

High Suicidal Risk Group of Elderly: Identification of Causal Factors and Development of Predictive Model (자살 고위험군 노인: 원인 파악 및 예측 모델 개발)

  • Elderly suicide problem has become worse in South Korea. With a rapid aging of the population, the trend of suicide among the elderly is expected to accelerate, preventing elderly suicide has been considered an important societal problem. Thus, we aim to investigate various factors that explain suicidal ideation and to develop a predictive model for suicidal ideation in the context of elderly people in South Korea. To this end, this study contributes to addressing the elderly suicide problem. By using seven-year panel data from the Korea Welfare Panel Survey, we extract various potential causal factors for elderly suicidal ideation based on interpersonal theory of suicide and social disorganization theory. Then a panel logit model was employed to assess the impacts of potential factors on suicidal ideation and deep learning and machine learning algorithms were used to develop a predictive model for suicidal ideation of elderly people. The results of our study provide practical implications for preventing elderly suicide by identifying causal factors of suicidal ideation and a high suicidal risk group of the elderly. This study sheds light on synergy of mixed methodology and provides various academic implications.

A study on the Typology and Determinants for Changes in the Social Participation of Middle-aged and Older Population (중·고령자 사회참여 변화 유형화와 결정요인에 관한 연구)

  • This study is aimed at offering a typology of changes in the social participation of middle-aged and older population and explore determinants for each type of such changes. The data employed for analysis are the 1st survey (2006) through the 6th version (2016) of the Korea Aging Research Panel Survey. Among the respondents of the panel survey, 1,327 males and 1,520 females with a total of 2,847 respondents were analyzed. As a result of applying the growth mixture modelling through the SPS 22.0 and M-plus 8.0 statistical programs, the changes in the social participation of middle-aged and older population have been classified into the 'high-decreasing', 'moderate-increasing' and 'low-stable' trajectory classes. Analysis of the determinants for each class shows that higher the education level, the more likely they are to belong to the high-decreasing and moderate-increasing classes than the low-stable class, and the more the population lives in urban areas, the more likely they are to belong to high-decreasing trajectory class than to low-stable class. Also, it was found that the probability of belonging to moderate-increasing trajectory class was higher than that of the low-stable class when there was no occupation. Through the results of these analyses, the implications of promoting social participation of middle-aged and older population were discussed.
