  • Two specimens of the syngnathid Syngnathoides biaculeatus were collected from the coastal waters of Geoje Ialand and Tongyeong, Korea, represent first record of the species and the genus from Korea. This species is characterized by the following combination of characters: caudal fin absent; opercle without keel; superior and inferior trunk ridges continuous with their respective tail ridges; lateral trunk ridge deflected dorsal behind anal ring. Tail shorter than head and body hexagonal in its subdorsal part, posterior quadrangular, rapidly tapering, without caudal fin, prehensile. Head essentially in line with longitudinal axis of body or bent very little. New Korean names are proposed, "Jal-pi-sil-go-gi-sok" for the genus Syngnathoides, and "Jal-pi-sil-go-gi" for S. biaculeatus.

  • The goal of this study was to isolate and characterize the wild yeast strains in the soils of Hajodae and Gyungpodae Beaches, Gyungpo Lake in Kangwon-do, Korea and evaluate their anti-demential and tyrosinase inhibitory activities. Among the 27 yeast strains isolated from 30 soil samples from Hajodae Beach, Cyberlindnera culbertsonii HJ31-1, Dothichiza pithyophila HJ22-4, Metschnikowia bicuspidata HJ16-1, and Sakaguchia cladiensis HJ14-1 were recorded for the first time in Korea. Additionally, six of the 55 wild yeast strains isolated from 45 soil samples from Gyungpodae Beach and Gyungpo Lake had not previously been detected in Korea, such as Aureobasidium melanogenum JR3-1. The microbiological characteristics and anti-demential and tyrosinase inhibitory activities of these previously unrecorded yeasts were investigated. Almost all of them were oval-shaped and had ascospores except for Dothichiza pithyophila HJ22-4, Diutina siamensis JR37-5, and Canadida gelsemii DC 35-1. Furthermore, they were all sugar-tolerant and able to grow in 20% glucose-containing YPD broth, except for Cyberlindnera culbertsonii HJ31-1. Diutina siamensis JR37-5 had the highest tyrosinase inhibitory activity (30.9%).

  • Fresh fungi were collected during field trips to Ullung Island from August, 1990, to September, 1991. Among them, some polyporoid fungi were recognized to the species. Thirty three species were identified, among which nine fungi were confirmed new in Korea and registered here with descriptions. These fungi are Auriporia aurulenta, Ceriporiopsis gilvescens, Ceriporiopsis subvermispora, Gloeophyllum trabeum, Junghuhnia separabilima, Oligoporus stipticus, Oxyporus similis, Phellinus lavigatus, and Polyporus melanopus.

  • Taxonomic study for some comatulid crinoids collected by a fishing net from about 170 m deep in front of Jukbyeon, East Sea in Korean water was conducted. A macrophreatan species, Boleometra clio (A. H. Clark, 1907) belonging to the subfamily Bathymetrinae and the family Antedonidae, was identified and turned out to be new to the Korean fauna. The family Antedonidae comprised five species in Korea.

  • A total of sixteen Xylotrechus species from the Korean peninsula are recognized, including a newly recorded species, Xylotrechus pavlovskii Plavilstshikov, 1954. We present brief descriptions of the Korean Xylotrechus species, except four species which could not be examined in this study. The geographic distribution, host plants, illustrations for each species, and a key to the Korean Xylotrechus species are provided.

  • Pleurogrammus monopterygius was first collected from Daejin-ri, Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, Korea on April 1999. This species is distinguished from its related species by having four to five broad blackish bands on the side of its body and different patterns of lateral lines. We gave P. monopterygius the new Korean name, "Dan-Gi-Im-Yon-Soo-Eo" and described the species in detail based on the study of specimens.

  • Tectaria fuscipes (Wall. ex Bedd.) C. Chr. (Baek-Rok-Go-Sa-Ri) is newly reported in Korea. This species belongs to the genus Tectaria Cav. of the family Tectariaceae Panigrahi. Thus far, no taxa of Tectariaceae have been reported in Korea. Tectaria fuscipes is characterized by its suberect to ascending rhizome, dimorphic or subdimorphic fronds, and free veins. The species was found on the southwestern slopes of Mt. Halla on Jeju Island, where it grows in sun near a small cave. It also occurs in southern China and in Taiwan. In Japan, eight species of the genus Tectaria have been reported, but T. fuscipes has yet to be recorded there. Jeju Island is the northeastern-most limit of the known range of this species.
