  • To investigate the occurrences of resting cysts of Diplopsalis and Protoperidinium species, sediment trap samples were collected from Gamak Bay, Korea. Based on the germination experiments, nine species of order Peridiniales were identified; cyst of Diplopsalis lebourae, cyst of Protoperidinium excentricum, cyst of Protoperidinium sp. cf. nudum, cyst of Protoperidinium obtusum, cyst of Protoperidinium ventricum, cyst of Protoperidinium sp.1, cyst of Protoperidinium sp.2, Protoperidinium sinuosum (Brigantedinium majusculum) and unidentified Peridiniales.

  • Some bryozoans were collected from the subtidal zone of Manjaedo Island on 23 Aug. 1988. Two species of them, Crepidacantha poissoni (Audouin, 1826) and Hippothoa distans MacGillivray, 1869 turned out to be new to the Korean fauna. The family Crepidacanthidae is new to Korea.

  • Endophytic fungal strains were isolated from the sterilized roots of a medicinal plant, Ligusticum chuanxiong and identified based on morphological characteristics and molecular analysis of internal transcribed spacer, large subunit rDNA, and beta-tubulin DNA regions. Our results confirmed the presence of Pithomyces chartarum and Plectosphaerella niemeijerarum in the fungal strains. To the best of our knowledge, the fungal strains have not been reported in Korea. In this report, we describe morphological characteristics and phylogenetic trees of these endophytic fungal strains.

  • In the present study, we isolated endophytic fungal strains from the rhizoids of the moss Funaria hygrometrica. The isolated strains were identified based on morphological characteristics and analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) rDNA sequence regions. Consequently, we confirmed the presence of two endophytic fungal species, Curvularia protuberata and Didymella anserina, which have not been reported in Korea previously. Here, we describe the morphological characteristics and molecular analysis results of these fungal species.

  • To find out ant fauna in the Mt. Chiak, collection tours were taken in three courses for two years. As a result, The ant fauna of Mt. Chiak were confirmed to be 45 species belonging to 23 genera under 4 subfamilies. Among them, ten species were new to Gangweon-province and Myrmica sp. 6 was new to Korea. Ants fauna of Gangweon-province at together became 74 species under 28 genera. In Ponerinae, ants fauna have become 5 species under 4 genera, in Myrmicinae, 20 species under 13 genera, in Dolichoderinae 1 species under 1 genera and in Formicinae 19 species under 5 genera.

  • A ghost flatheads, Hoplichthys langsdorfii Cuvier and Valenciennes of the family Hoplichthyidae was studied for the first time in Korea. Eighteen specimens were collected from Pusan in February 3, 1993. The Haplichthys langsdorfii is similar to H. gilberti in morphometric characters, but H. langsdorfii differs from H. gilberti in having 2 rows of spinous processes on the scute of both side of body and longer snout than eye diameter. A new Korean name "Gasiyangtae" is proposed for the H. langsdorfii.

  • Acrolepiopsis nagaimo (Yasuda, 2000) belonging to the family Acrolepiidae (Lepidoptera) is newly reported from Korea. The species was first collected at Gimcheon-si in 2003 and later they were found to infest Chinese yam, Dioscorea batatas at a Chinese yam experimental field of the Institute for Bioresources Research located at Andong in 2008. Diagnostic characteristics of the adult are described and photographs of adult and male and female genitalia are provided.
