  • In this study, we aimed to identify the types of acknowledgments in Korean LIS journal articles and to find out whether there are differences in the bibliometric characteristics of journal articles based on the types of acknowledgments. For the analysis, the acknowledgments, references, and citation counts of 2,143 articles published in four representative journals in the field of library and information science in Korea for nine years from 2013 to 2021 were obtained as data. We analyzed the contents of 1,433 acknowledgments in 1,311 articles (61.2% of all articles) to divide them into types and then examined the bibliometric characteristics of each type of article. The acknowledgment types were broadly divided into the 'ethics' type (avoiding duplicate publication) and 'thanks' type, which were further subdivided into 9 and 10 types, respectively. We examined the number of references, recency of references, and citations as bibliometric characteristics, and found that all of these characteristics differed between the types of acknowledgements.

  • This study analyzed trends in research activity as represented in master's theses and doctoral dissertations in the field of library and information science from 2001 to 2010. This study explores the year of publication, the university of publication, the department/major of publication, and subject by examining recent trends in theses and dissertations in the field of LIS, and comparing the results to previously reported by Sohn, Jung-Pyo, for the period of 1959 to 2002. Conclusions are 1) The finding of this study demonstrate that quantitative progress is being made in library and information science research in 2000s. 2) In comparison to previous study, average number of master's theses and doctoral dissertations per year increased four times. 3) The number of master's theses and doctoral dissertations on the subject area of information services were increased.

  • With reference management tool based on web, we could understand not only impact about non-author, such as hand-on worker, educator, who are out of academia, but also trace the subject fields of readers and their status. This study by analyzing mendeley, understand what kinds of subject fields and status of readers read library and information science field articles. As a result of analyzing the status and the major of the reader, readers were distributed in the fields of business administration, education and so on, and according to the reader's major, there was a significant difference (p = .000) between the subject area of relatively read a lot. By the way, as the result of relational analysis between citation rate and numbers of mendeley readership about medeley saved articles, correlation coefficient shows 0.585, however as the result of relational analysis limiting the groups, in case of author group who tends to read the articles for citing, correlation coefficient shows 0.619. On the other hand, non-author group shows 0.384.

  • This research started from bringing up a problem about special situation of the library and information science, which is not easy to investigate its academic characteristics, although it has settled down as a powerful science studying related phenomena as well as education required for the whole process from production of information to consumption of it. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to questingly investigate whether the personal specialty and the experience of taking courses affect recognition of the term 'library and information', and if so, through which channel it influences. In this background, data were collected from 328 students of Chonnam National University for this research, and the following are the analysis results: first, as for the personal characteristics, differences were not generated according to gender and age, but according to scholastic year the results were different; second, as for the experience of taking courses, there were not differences according to whether or not of the experience, but the results varied according to the number and type of the experience; and third, most of the respondents surveyed understood the meaning of a term 'library and information' as the conception of covering the information contained in literature and information of it, regardless of the personal characteristics and the experience of taking courses. Through these results, it can be identified that the term 'library and information' meant in the library and information science is generally understood as expansion of range, rather than chemical combination of literature and information, it is a terminology with various meanings sometimes understood differently according to the special personal experiences, and it also needs scientific investigation of it.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze how the Library and Information Science (LIS) related research efforts in Korea contributed to the progress of the Human Computer Interaction (HCI) discipline to identify the potential collaboration research partners and topics. The following data was used for the network and frequency analysis: titles, keywords and affiliation information extracted from the Korean journals serving the LIS fields as well as the conference proceedings of the Korean HCI society. Information communication technology, computer engineering, and technology industry had been active in research collaborations but LIS field was comparatively not active. This study was able to determine that LIS researchers carried out important research but they had not much interests in the topics that required interdisciplinary collaboration. However, there were a number of papers, which were not authored by LIS discipline researchers, in the LIS related journals. In addition, there are a few ongoing interdisciplinary research projects which included LIS researchers. This reveals that it is possible for the LIS field could play an important role in the future if the researchers actively participate the collaborative projects.

  • To investigate the characteristics of Korean researchers who have published journal articles in the international Library and Information Science (LIS) journals, we analyzed the types of institutions of the authors and their disciplines by publication year and journal type. Specifically, we analyzed 819 pieces of author information from 384 articles published between 2005 and 2014 in 31 journals using the existing categories, allowing comparisons of research trends between past and current and between Korean and international researchers. In addition, we used a co-authorship credit allocation method to calculate the credits of individual authors in an accurate manner, and found that 342.6 of 384 papers were contributed by solely Korean researchers. We demonstrated that the internationality and quality of Korean LIS research has increased during this time. In particular, authors who were affiliated with universities took the lead in publishing papers, and we presented that the nature of research might be related to the type of author affiliation. Based on the disciplinary backgrounds of the researchers, we also suggest that LIS research is associated with such disciplines, computer science, management, and communications.

  • The Council of the ALA has designated Committee on Accreditation to be responsible for the execution of the accreditation program of the ALA and to development and formulate standards of education for graduate programs of library and information studies leading to master's degree. The vast majority of employers require an ALA-accredited master's degree for professional positions in the field of library and information science; therefore, graduating from an ALA-accredited program enhances your career mobility and provides greater flexibility in the types of jobs for which you qualify. ALA-accredited master's programs can be found at colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the characteristics of research collaborations in the field of LIS. While there are several studies under the unit of analysis of country, there are only a few studies under the unit of analysis of institution in LIS field. For this analysis, we selected eight journals in the KCI (Korea Citation Index) web site, which correspond to the field of LIS through subject classification. The collaborative indices, Collaborative Coefficient, Co-Authorship Index, Local Collaborative Index (LCI), Domestic Collaborative Index (DCI) allowed us to comparatively analyze institutional collaboration patterns in LIS field. In the case of Chung-Ang University, Yonsei University, and Ewha Womans University, collaborative research among professors, graduate students, and professors reflected the fact that collaborations among universities are often performed with professors. In the case of KISTI, which showed a very high index value, the characteristics of project-based research are reflected in the research collaboration pattern.
